Why is Apple so secretive about RAM? It makes no sense to me. Everyone finds out anyway; they may as well just list it in the specs.

Because the general consumer IE people who don't come to this site regularly don't know what RAM does. It takes the "techy" talk out of tech. Simplified for the general masses. Always been that way.

Unfortunately, half of Apple's userbase are idiots. The average user doesn't know what the heck is in their iPhone yet buy one every year for the sheer fact that it is faster, has a sexy design, probably a new feature (Touch-ID, 3D Touch) and an Apple Logo on it.
So what about the other half who are not idiots and keep buying them? Stupid arguments... If the phone does what you need and is done well then why does it matter. Now who is stupid and support lame arguments?

Are you new here?

The biggest excuse given on this very forum for why it's okay for Apple to ship underspec'ed devices is "Most people don't know the difference, therefore it's okay."

The Unwashed should not be the motivating drivers of advancement.
That's a mischaracterization of the excuse people give for Apple's decision. The real reason is this:

http://9to5mac.com/2014/04/24/apple...-smartphone-satisfaction-across-all-carriers/

The iPhone has the highest level of customer satisfaction of any smartphone in the US, and has for 8 years in a row. Apple is doing the minimum it can do to maintain its position at the very tip top of the rankings. The very tip top!

1GB RAM was enough for Apple to maintain its position up to now. The iPhone 6S has new features that will likely cause it to actually need more RAM the the iPhone 6 did, such as buffering 12MP "Live" photos and 4K video. With 1GB RAM, these would eat up enough RAM that the rest of the phone couldn't operate very well, and that would affect user satisfaction.

What about iPad mini 4? They said it was the same internals as the Air 2 but it only has an A8 instead of A8X, so RAM should probably still be confirmed.

The difference between the A_ and the A_X chips is that the A_X chips have greater GPU power to push the greater amount of pixels of the tablets. Because this is a mini tablet with less pixels, Apple thinks that the A_ chips is sufficient.

Exactly, the typical consumer doesn't really understand RAM. So they don't want that person to see that competitors product X has 2x the RAM of this Apple product. They want that consumer to focus on what the product does. It's specific features not just a comparison of numbers on a spec sheet. Same reason they rarely give out clock speed of the chips. They use easier to understand metrics of actual performance comparisons like 2.5x faster than the previous model at processing, graphics etc.

The average consumer understands how irritating it is for Safari tabs to constantly refresh for lack of memory, though.

i don't really think them not mentioning RAM is an issue. There are dozens of reviews available before new iPhones hit the shelves.

The pre-orders open before the tear down reviews, so it would be nice to know the amount of memory before that time.

I don't like how Apple treats their userbase like idiots. Mentioning RAM would've been great at the press release to relieve a lot of loyal fans.
I'm sure they could've explained it in a way everybody could follow or do they all think we are too stupid?
Because grandma is in that userbase.

The iPad mini 4 has exactly the same number of pixels as the iPad Air 2.... 2048 x 1536, or 3 megapixels....

The difference between the A_ and the A_X chips is that the A_X chips have greater GPU power to push the greater amount of pixels of the tablets. Because this is a mini tablet with less pixels, Apple thinks that the A_ chips is sufficient.

I think it's funny that people have already ordered the product and do not know the stats.

Ps. I've got beach front property in Florida I can make you a great deal on, I'll even plant an apple tree for you.

Focusing on performance/improvements is not focusing on specs. The two can easily be discussed separately.

Should have been 2 GB in the first place. The way apps refresh is my number one dislike of my 6+. It is beyond frustrating to type something in one app, multitask to safari to check something, and then come back to see my text obliterated.

Apple does focus on specs, though--every year they talk about GPU and CPU performance. I would argue that RAM limitations are more impactful to a user's experience than processor speed. But I guess it's easier to communicate that "it's faster" than "2 GB means your apps will refresh less".

"hate"? Dang. Lighten up, son.

HATE is the best descriptive word... People coming to this website are becoming backward and ignorant. It's because of the popularity of the brand but I am starting to really hate this Android Nazi-like mentality from supposed Apple Fans... aside from the straight Android trolls that come here.

It wasn't like this a decade ago. The mods are also out of control on this site now too.

Sorry, not until it has a decent file system.

It actually has a better file system than MacOS X. The basics are identical, but iOS has hardware encryption permanently turned on, with per-file keys using different security levels as needed; a huge security benefit. Basically, nobody can read files on your device unless it is unlocked. Even if they cracked one file, that crack would be completely useless to read the next file.

They don't want you to think of the iPhone as a computer, which is why they avoided talking about specs in detail in the past.

There are plenty of people who don't _like_ computers and being told about gigawhatevers just is offputting to them, and they buy something else.

It gets too technical for grandma.

Too technical for the grandchildren.
