Gosh, you're right. Xiaomi copying the external iPhone look is
nothing compared to the technology that Apple used from previous smartphones
Without all the handhelds and smartphones that had preceded it since the early 90s, the iPhone could never have existed. Among other things, it took advantage of:
- A massive worldwide voice / data network and chips to access that network.
- A massive worldwide primed market of cell and smartphone users.
- A common list of basic smartphone apps that people had come to expect by then.
- Mass smartphone assemblers like Foxconn.
- Even the well known candy bar phone shape.
Then there's all the prior touchscreen ideas worked out by many researchers over decades, from flick scrolling to multi-touch. Most of the iPhone was a copy of prior art, including the implementation of an all-touch UI.
Heck, even the fallback ability of the first GPS-less iPhone to get its location from towers and WiFi networks came from data compiled by the millions of GPS equipped smartphones that preceded it.
So yeah, he's right... Apple benefited hugely from the billions of dollars and years of R&D that others had done before.
