Beyond the obvious of having a larger screen without compromising handholdability? This phone has roughly the dimensions of the iPhone 6/7 Plus but has a 6.4" instead of 5.5" screen. Applying the same ratio, you could have a 5.5" screen in a phone the size of the 4.7" iPhone. You don't see a benefit in this?
They care about impressing the tech press though. They're not. It just so happens Western media is interested. You got cause and effect backwards. Western world cares about Xiaomi, Xiaomi doesn't care much about the international market.
I don't understand the need some people have on this forum to bash non-Apple products for the most surreal, made-up, silly reasons. It's almost like you're insecure or something, that you pay ~$1000 for a smartphone that's hardly worth buying for half that money.
Im sick of empty posts that like this that have no substance, and no basis in reality.Thats Courage from Xiomi! Looks beautiful - Screen to Body ratio where Apple always failed me! Sick of same design - Where the hell innovation lies? give some aesthetic change as well Apple.
People don't forget. They willingly ignore so they can make lame jokes about how so and so out Appled Apple. The only reason Xiaomi is introducing this phone is because they know it doesn't have to be produced in gigantic volumes like the latest model iPhone. Everybody conveniently forgets that Apple has to balance new technology with gigantic production demands that dwarf their competitors models.
Where are these edgeless displays being produced in mass quantities? This is what the iPhone 7 should have looked like instead of pretty much an iPhone 6
It is beyond ridiculous when imitation products like this get this kind of undeserved attention. It is not even a shadow of the complete package that iPhone is. But it happens to strike a chord that the tech media has told everyone they want (ridiculous edge to edge screen), so apparently that it makes it worth talking about. Its pathetic.

Aesthetic change = innovation? LMAO. What a joke.
How do we know this isn't being rushed to market? Have you used one?A lot of ignorance in this thread.
You should applaud Xiaomi for doing something innovative and actually bringing it to market in a big way.
The Sharp phone was an interesting aside but rushed to market. This could herald a bold new category - and one that Apple is no doubt looking to jump into.

Just like the bend gate of the iPhone 6 right.
That's incredible.
Xiaomi hasn't been happy with just flat out copying Apple designs for some time. Now, it seems like they are basically being fed Apple prototyping info by Chinese companies since a lot of the tech in this "world's first" phone probably originated in the iPhone 8 prototype.
If they got rid of the bottom bezel too, it would would be truly gorgeous. I would be fine with a small 1mm bezel around the whole screen, going all the way to the edge isn't necessary and does make it more likely to shatter.
