And where is the connection between Apple “allegedly” making a foldable iPad, and copying... anything? Firstly, no company has released a foldable screen device yet. Previews have happened but nothing is in the shops.

And secondly, do you realise how long it would take to design such a device? Probably years. Ideas, prototypes, refinement, more ideas, more prototypes, more refinement, and so on.

But you seem to allege that Apple have the photocopiers running due to a couple of companies showcasing foldable devices only a few months ago. I don’t think you understand how much R&D and time would go into designing such a device, particularly as what has been shown earlier this year look terrible and are highly likely to break.

I’m sure that if Apple is working on a foldable iPad or other sized device, then they’ve been doing so for a long time, and really have no need to take inspiration from what was poorly previewed recently...

I'm surprised Xiaomi doesn't release their new original company logo.

Definitely. Of course Apple is notoriously closemouthed about R&D activities, but in 2011 Samsung proudly announced they had made a prototype folding phone. But for “real commercialization” another one to two years of R&D would be necessary.

One might even guess Steve Jobs had been working on a concept folding device, sans working display, since at least then (or for years before, who knows?).

This has to stop. This really hurts the economy.
Whose economy?

I’m not sure this hurts anyone in the US, anyway.

No lawsuit. That won't happen.

As far as quality is concerned, I'm all for copying best practice and then implementing them. If Xiaomi is Apple's copycats then it's for the better. I wish Samsung and Sony copied some facets of Apple "Magic" that, in turn, would copy Samsung's and Sony's inventions and blend them with Apple's fine touch philosophy. If indeed Xiaomi is capable of doing so, I applaud and am ready to become their customer.
No lawsuits will happen, correct.

Apple don’t care about the Chinese companies operating in China/Asia. This is why they never sue them.
That’s not it at all. China offers nearly zero protections for intellectual property rights. That is quite possibly the biggest trade issue we have with them. Oh, and tariffs will never fix the IP issue....

Why are Chinese companies so lazy they can’t design their own stuff.

They only care about making a quick buck. Also, individualism and innovation are not desirable traits in a nation where the regime wants to keep tight control over its subjects.

Even if they were to pursue legal action, they would get nowhere in the Chinese courts. Foreigners and foreign companies never get fair treatment; the courts always rule in favor of the Chinese national/company. And even then, you need to be politically connected to get anything ruled in your favor. It’s an incredibly corrupt system. China likes to project itself as a first world modern nation/economy....but its all a facade that everyone sees right through, and when criticized, the Chinese government spews propaganda to its people saying any criticism is just Western imperialism trying to keep China down. The nation still has a long way to go if they want to be taken seriously.

Your right.

heh, I checked a youtube clip of the scene just to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks on me.. ended up watching the entire movie last night.. :D

Why are people surprised when production of everything is sent offshore and then the people in those countries learn from that and apply that knowledge to their own products? That's not lazeness. It's an incredibly sensible way to build your economy.

how does that spiel fit in with this thread/context?

"According to Xiaomi's public relations general manager, Xu Jieyun, this was all an accident. Xiaomi staff "uploaded the wrong content" to the sites, Xu Jieyun said on Weibo."

News alert. You can't 'upload the wrong content' if you don't have the assets to upload.

This explanation is farcical. He's admitting to the world that they'd downloaded Apple images and assets and had them stored prominently enough, ostensibly even mixed in with their own assets to such a degree that someone was able to 'accidentally' upload them to their website.

If they weren't trying to copy Apple, why were they downloading those assets?

It's not about being lazy. It's simply a cultural thing, that they don't think it's wrong, neither morally nor legally, to infringe on other's works. Similar to how many people on social media feeling it's okay to just copy paste or use works of art (pictures, music, etc) without proper credits, but this is on a much larger scale.

It might be common sense to us, but not to them. Heck, the latest Xiaomi CC phone is a blatant copy of Huawei's P30 series. They even copied their own comrades. And for a company like Xiaomi who don't spend as much money on ads compared to the likes of Samsung, these kind of things actually benefitted them as it works like a free publicity for them done by the tech bloggers, I think.

Except that Apple cannot possibly win if the trial goes in a Chinese judicial court. China's government loves and defends its culture of copyright theft.
More like the Chinese government more often sided with local companies than foreign companies. It's a protectionism thing, common in other countries as well when there are disputes between a local and foreign entity.

Ah.. China doing what it does best !
Well, it's the same cycle of progression we have seen before.
In the past, we have Japan, manufacturing stuff for the west. They copied things, then they made crappy things at first, then they improved and made great things. The same also happened with S Korea, where they started with copying things as well. The difference is that China is a much larger country with much more resources than Japan and Korea, so when China is going through the same cycle, they do it with a bang.

it'd be weird going to war with China.. the weapons would be the originals vs the knockoffs ;)

(it'd be weird (read:lame) going to war with China regardless.. just saying the weaponry knockoffs doing battle would be... funny?)

also.. China made a fake........ PARIS :D

I only have these two words: No Shame!!!

I mean if you "accidentally" uploaded the wrong ad file, then you MUST have that file in your computer to begin with. Now can somebody help me understand why you would have your competitor's advertising materials in your computer?
