You buy it! than you start looking for apps in the andriod market place and realize the apple apps are so much better and aready paid for.

This is the thing. Unlike a desktop or laptop which is a big investment, tablets are more likely to be replaced - on a yearly, or bi-yearly basis.

However, who in their right mind is going to spend a few hundred quid on iOS apps only to abandon them and start afresh with Android? And vice versa.

You need to correct some information here. i agree that 800 dollars is a lot of money, but Xoom is not overpriced at all. As soon as I saw Samsung Tab was priced at 599 dollars. I knew that Motorola will hit 700 dollars easily and even hit 800-900 dollars price point. I am surprised that they managed keep it at 800 dollars.

Xoom Wifi+ 3G =800 dollars
iPad Wifi+ 3G = 729 dollars

Given the fact that xoom has a lot of better specs than iPad with 2 cameras. There is no way anyone can claim that xoom is overpriced. It's not. If you were expecting it to be cheaper, perhaps, you were hoping. But, these companies are running for money and they have to make profits.

You guys are funny. I'd be willing to bet that the same people who complain about how expensive the Xoom is, are the people who buy Apple laptops and defend paying 2x as much as they're worth because they're not bottom barrel PC's from Dell.

Is there a reason why a Dev would produce their App only for the Apple marketplace and not also either themselves, or pay someone else to port/create a version for the Android marketplace?

Both marketplaces will continue to grow over time. Theoretically in time there would be more people buying Apps for the Android platform due to just sheer numbers. Of course Tablet apps are in the infancy, but perhaps all the reason why now would be a good time for devs to create apps.
Over this year, Honeycomb tablets will start to sell in numbers and there will be a large group of people hungry for any apps specifically written to take advantage of the tablets hardware. It would seem a golden opportunity for any Dev, as soon as they can to have their products ready to be bought by these new customers.

My opinion:

It's not overpriced. It's the right price for the specs and gigs.

The problem is that it's the only device. Many people are going to like it, but are going to choose the awesome apple branded tablet because it's Apple and it has cheaper models.

Lets be real. Apple will have at least one of the first versions still on sale when the second gen comes out. This is the one those non tech people "who don't follow apple but want a tablet cause its the cool thing now" will buy. They don't have to have the new one. This one will still sell by the boat loads.

The Xoom and any other tablet that prices itself at 700+ will be competing against at least four different models of the iPad with two of those iPads being cheaper. And one of those two will have the front facing camera which is what's most important on any mobile device these days.

The world doesn't care about 4g. Only techies do.
The world doesn't care about screen resolution. Only techies do.
The world doesn't care about flash. Only techies do.
The world doesn't care about processors and ram. Only techies do.

Apple has the upper hand becaue the world only knows one tablet(The iPad). The world knows who motorola, Samsung, and HP are, but they don't know about them having a tablet. And even when they find out about them having a tablet, they will compare prices and clearly see that they can obtain an iPad for far less dollars. They won't understand the ram, chip, and processor mubo jumbo.

The only problem I see is that a lot of these non techies don't understand the difference in buying the tablets when it comes to contract vs no contract. My sister didn't understand that if she would have just bought the iPad from apple, she could have just AT&T prepaid system vs buying a tablet from verizon where she now is obligated to a two year contract. When it becomes more obvious, this is going to hurt those highly priced tablets.

I AM NOT BUYING A TABLET FOR CHEAP AND SIGN ON TO A TWO YEAR CONTRACT OR ANY CONTRACT FOR THAT MATTER WHEN I CAN JUST USE AT&T WHO'S SERVICE IS ADEQUATE ENOUGH. WIFI IS EVERYWHERE ANYWAY.

I would not agree with this:

"The world doesn't care about flash. Only techies do."

Your average non technical consumer will care when they go to their favourite web site that they always use, only to find it does not work. and then totally not understand when someone trys to explain the whole Apple/Adobe issue.

All a non technical person will want is for it to work.

Ouch Motorola. When the regular consumer sees it, they don't care about dual-core, HDMI, Honeycomb, etc etc, they just see that it's more than the iPad.

At last, a sensible post. I'm all over the Xoom but I must admit the $800 price point [with?] a contract is a tad too much.

Mind you, I might just cave when it gets released and be an early adopter. Only time will tell if other people go with this gem of a machine, or stay with the trusted iPad, for better or worse in it's technical aspects.

Remember there will be other makes of Honeycomb Tablet which can run the same programs and the same UI for far less money. So you don't have to choose Motorola or nothing.
Which is the major advantage of Android/Honeycomb. It's more lightly that people will be able to find a product that suits their budget.

Yup, agreed. From a purely technical lust perspective I was blown away by the Xoom.

One other tablet I've been mulling over is Notion Ink's Adam. Not sure when it will go mainstream as the pre-orders have only started shipping.

I still don't understand about this whole 700 dollars pricing thing. It hasn't been confirmed whether it's with contract or without. I have a feeling this 700 dollars version will be wi-fi model only with 32GB storage. This tablet has a lot of features packed in and yes, it is going to cost you. You ain't going to see 499 dollars starting price from this boy. 700 dollars for wi-fi version and 800 dollars without.

Don't try. It not out yet. It's all rumors.

And now the price is back up to $800. Such a roller coaster ride of emotion!

If it's $700, I'll bite. If $800, I'll check out the iPad.

Computers from Apple are better made. Dell and other use those cheap plastic materials. So, it is not a fair comparison. iPad is made with higher quality of material than that of Xoom.

I was impressed in comparison to the tablets that are available now.

I currently own a FlyTouchII tablet. I don't have to use a Xoom to know 3.0 will be a real killer.

I think it's impossible to be blown away by anything you haven't used.

Don't forget they also last longer, hold their value, and you can walk into an Apple store with a G5 iMac, that has never had the OS wiped and reinstalled, and get it tuned up and double the memory installed FOR FREE... (They did this for my mother about three months ago). Try getting tech support on a NEW HP or DELL much less a 5 1/2 to 6 year old model.

Oh, and let's not forget, Maximum PC did some testing awhile back. Best computer for running Windows? Yep, a Mac.

Anything is better Eclair os (2.1). Honeycomb is still beta!! Come feb. 17. They may delay, if Honeycomb is not ready. Sound like a rush job. I would wait.
