I’m pretty annoyed that when I put my XS max away in a drawer the ‘true tone’ changes the colours in a way that I don’t like. I mean, obviously I can’t see it because it’s locked away in a drawer, but I know that it does it and that annoys me in deep way. Going to have to return it.

Lol

The XR seems to missing the dual domain pixels, which really improved the viewing angles on previous Apple LCDs. I guess most people won't care, and will buy the XR anyway.

You never sit on a couch and prop your phone on your belly and scroll down on text/internet LOL?

I can honestly say I've never done this. I'm having trouble imagining the mechanics.

I'll note this as something I need to look at when I check out the XR in person - but I can't get worked up about it based on a single video. imo a shift like this is acceptable within a certain range...I don't want to be forced to hold the phone at a very specific angle in order to maintain accurate color. If the screen allows for a decent range of motion (maybe 15 degrees?), then such a shift wouldn't bother me. I'll just have to see for myself.

Amazing that people expect a nice screen when paying a considerable amount of cash. I mean it's outrageous, it's only the main thing you see on a smartphone since you look at it all the time from all angles (having it on the bedside when you wake up, next to your keyboard when you work, on a counter when cooking, etc.). Ignorance is bliss.
NOOO!!! The main thing you see on a smartphone is ugly Android, followed by the forehead and chin of older iPhones, followed by the notch and then the bigger bezels of the XR. Before you see an off-axis pink shift, you even notice the not so deep black levels on an LCD screen.

But the main annoyance remains Android versus the price of iPhones. Ignorance is bliss. If you’re able to look at Android or swallow the price of an XS, good for you. But for the rest of us, we have no choice.

People have to find something to complain about, you know. Get prepared for all the negative XR threads that are gonna hit on Friday LOL
This is just a teaser one ;)

That’s the nature of a tech site. It doesn’t matter which Apple product it is or in this case, the XR, it’s going to generally accumulate complaints or concerns, I don’t care how expensive or how many praises it has, it’s just ‘How it is.’

Not really a comparable use case , but ok!

I find it incredible how personally
Emotionally attacked people feel by the slightest of criticism and/or questioning of a trillion dollar company’s offerings. Oh well!

If you’re buying XR you’re not focused on screen quality anyway as the xs and xs max is where the best screen is anyway.

I was just messing :)

The ‘issue’ will bother you as much as you let it. If I’m bothered by the colours of a particular image, I’m probably going to put the screen in front of my face to view it properly. In fact, if I can’t really think of any scenario where I’m not looking squarely at the screen on my phone. Maybe when I’m at a desk and glancing at my phone....? But in that scenario I don’t think I’m going to need absolutely accurate colours.

I really wouldn’t let it bother you.

And I find it incredible the lengths that some people go to to find faults, nit-picks, and perceived 'problems' with a device. This whole 'color shift' thing would mean a great deal if the phone was used in a fixed position. These things are, by design, made to be held in your hand, which in and of itself can be moved to any position, thereby diminishing the perceived problem.
In other words, if a dead perfect display experience is what you require, hold the damn thing straight to look at it.

Wow the comments on this forum are reverting to the old days of rabid Apple apologists! Comments like "who looks at their screen from an angle" only highlight the narrow viewpoint of some members. So you don't interact with your device the same way as someone else.

I think it was since the 7 series that Apple nailed its LCD and boasted about its viewing angles. Now in 2018 we get an LCD which is worst, how do we give Aapple a pass on this? My 7+ doesn't colour shift and has good viewing angles. Oh and a 1080p resolution.

You can give Apple a 'pass' if the overall user experience on the new phone is better to you than the old phones and shifting tints on off-axis viewing angles doesn't concern you.

People act as if Apple is forcing people to buy their phones. Is something like off axis color shift bothers someone, then either A. Skip this generation and buy an older device or wait until next year or B. Find another manufacturer that doesn't produce devices with the same issue.

You've seen the Verge video review? You can see the colour shift and diming as he turns display? And the display is lower than 1080p. Both of these factors are not present in the 7+ or 8+ and the XR has a larger display and is newer. Oops sorry, I'm holding it wrong!

Sometimes wielding a device one hand you’re viewing at different angles. Or laying it on a surface to watch content

Exactly

Who looks at there phone from an angle? Serious? You never sit on a couch and prop your phone on your belly and scroll down on text/internet LOL?

No one does. It's such an odd thing to care about on a phone or tablet. My iPad does the same thing, but I get around it by viewing it straight on like a normal human would. The blueshift on the max isn't an issue for me either. It was the other graphical issue that was making me ill, as well as the colors being oddly bright/cartoonish which was messing with my eyes, especially on games. Hopefully I can get over that because I doubt the future is going to be LCD.

The interesting thing is other reviewers said the opposite. We could have another screen lottery on our hands, which wouldn't be the first time that happened with Apple hardware.

One of the reasons I had to return my XS was due to PWM, but also the color shift when using it one hand really threw me off. In order to hit other areas with my thumb I would tilt the phone slightly to the the right (to act as a counter balance). On my 8, I never saw any real issues, but the XS I would be seeing this color shift every time I swiped, especially reading things, and it really caused issues for me.

Thankfully, sounds like it might not be as big of an issue:

Why are so many people pretending that they never use their phones at “weird” angles? They’re small portable devices, of course they get used at weird angles. I had mine lying on top of a cushion on my stomach the other night watching Great British Bake Off because I didn’t want to annoy my fella by putting it on the telly.

Don't buy it.

Although I’m not buying the Xr, I agree with people who are disappointed with the screen. The lower ppi I could live with, as to be honest I like the 8 screen, but the colour shifting is a definite no. The colours didn’t shift on my 6S Plus or 8 so I certainly wouldn’t expect (or accept) it on a new LCD phone.

It is the thing I like least about OLED, if there was an option to have the Max with the previous LCD screens, I’d be all over it - even more if it were 16:9 ratio. Blacker blacks are of absolutely no interest to me, white backgrounds that remain white when moving the phone are.

If colour shifting is truly something happening then that’s interesting and a bit disappointing, especially given that over the years the LCD display on iPhones seemed to improve significantly, including at one point having excellent viewing angles with no colour or tint shifting.

And why are they always wielding them? I just carry mine, LOL!

Its OK because next year the will boast about a 1080p LCD with excellent viewing angles on XR 2.

But what are your friends going to think when you invite them all over to watch the Super Bowl on your 6.1 inch iPhone XR and there's a slight color shift off-angle and no 1080p?! They're going to think less of you. Much much less of you. Can you live with that?

What about your current phones which you're using now, do they have these color issues? Are you content with your current iPhone screens?
