And I find it incredible the lengths that some people go to to find faults, nit-picks, and perceived 'problems' with a device. This whole 'color shift' thing would mean a great deal if the phone was used in a fixed position. These things are, by design, made to be held in your hand, which in and of itself can be moved to any position, thereby diminishing the perceived problem.
In other words, if a dead perfect display experience is what you require, hold the damn thing straight to look at it.

What lengths? I’m reading a review and posting a prominent gif on that review from a prominent tech publication

Couldn’t be less effortless but I suppose that’s subjective?

And why are they always wielding them? I just carry mine, LOL!

I remember people oooo’ing and ahhhh’ing over IPS viewing angles. Now it’s completely irrelevant

Odd how that works!

I have an 8+ and when I tilt my phone, I see some color shift. I did it yesterday when I watched this video because I thought having the screen do that might be crappy, but then I realized I have had a phone for a year that does the same thing (although the shift is a little more blueish than pink). I have never really noticed it before.

What I did notice was the color change when I tilted the XS Max (had to return due to headaches/eye strain issues), but I can promise you if I could’ve tolerated using that phone, I certainly would’ve kept it.

I get there’s a difference, but the point is, people are surviving owning phones with some slight color shift at various angles.

My iPad Pro does it and my MacBook Pro Retina from 2015 also does it. Somehow I've survived.

Well I’m certainly not sure how you’ve managed! ;-p

My pro did it as well, as does my current 2018 iPad (which I’m planning to replace with a new pro that will likely do the same). I don’t know how I have lived to tell the tale.

Regardless, a video like the one in the review is no way to judge. My X has some minor color shifting (toward blue) when tilted. Doesn't bother me in the least nor has anyone ever mentioned anything of the sort when looking at photos in a small group where someone will invariably be off axis to the screen. Point being - let's wait until tomorrow when we can get the XR in our hands. If whatever color shift exists bothers you meaningfully, then don't buy the phone. Don't assume though that it'll bother everyone equally, or at all.

It’s not a matter of shift existing all displays do it it’s the severity of it that might turn some people off. Even in that gif the plus shifts. It’s just clearly not as much. Affects brightness too imo but I guess I have to say everything is subjective

I discovered I really struck a chord w this thread :D

I’m finding it hilarious and entertaining at this point tho so please... continue

More or less hilarious than someone desperately trying to make a big deal out of an "issue" that the person who reported it claims is no big deal? But please continue...

Damn. My TV has some color shift when I stand off to the side. How dare they call this 4K!!!!

Who uses their phone shifted to the side? OLED does the color changing or bluing as some call it.

I use my phone on a stand to watch video all the time. It places the phone at a shallow angle. If I don’t have the stand I’ll prop it up on a napkin and it’s even shallower. Not sure if it’s shallow enough to matter here but it’s potentially a big issue for me.

I have to admit that I never thought about any color shift on my iPhone X, 2017 MBP, or 10.5 inch IPP. Of course, now that I've read through this thread and have tested my devices out, they all have this shift to one degree or another, and now I can't unsee it. But it doesn't bother me on any of them. There are also 2 2012 MBAs around the house, and those have oodles of off-axis color shift, and that DOES bother me. But I figure that getting a XR to replace a 6 with a shattered display will be worlds better, and the shift won't matter at all.

The Verge review was really quite good. I think the host put concerns about the display in the right context. Screen nerds (funny term) will be critical of the screen as compared to the one on the XS or Max. But most other people will be happy with it.

I actually like that because from time to time when the screen seems really bright in low light situations I just tilt it a tad to dim it.

I've only skimmed through this thread, so I apologize if this has been answered, but has any other reviewer mentioned XR color shift that Patel at The Verge?

Holy shift Sherlock! It happens on the Xs too but it won’t bother many people as most look directly at it with it in front of them, TVs do it too, I wouldn’t worry.

Adam.

It's interesting that so many people who either dont see colour shift or are not bothered about it feel the need to come to any thread discussing it? Its the same with the XS and MAX threads, worst yet the one were people discuss getting eye strain and headaches from the PWM of these oleds.

People literally come out in their droves to say people are wrong, have mental issue, problems with their eyes, are holding it wrong, shouldn't but Apple products etc!

If your so happy with your 100% perfect products then why hang out in these particular threads. The "defenders" of everything Apple!

This is hilarious because...no human ever uses their phone "tilted" away from them.
You've not read this thread and you have a weird scale for humour.

The iphone XR truly is the "Most Other People's" phone. Maybe we should have a drinking game or something every time someone mentions what "most people" should be buying or happy with..lol

But seriously, when you change the criteria for reviews or critiques, then what's the point? Iphone X/XS/Max are reviewed for what they are even if they do mention the bleeding edge price a bit too much. That's obvious. Why harp on it?

However, in these XR reviews, we see a lot less consistency. Shortcomings are often explained away with "most people" not caring too much. The lower price is mentioned a lot as if that isn't super obvious either.

Then a conclusion is made. Blah blah blah, the XS is the best iphone ever made...if you can afford it. For XR? It's the best iphone ever made for "most people." lol They're super quick to dismiss any inferior feature due to a lower price or explaining away that normal buyers won't care anyways. It's also implying that people who do buy iphone XS are not normal. They're not "most buyers." It's not normal to spend what the XS costs on a phone. But yet, the iphone X led Apple in revenue. The "most people" shunned the 5C. They were supposed to like the colors. These "most people" weren't supposed to care about features. They got it wrong. This is where they have to be careful in assuming such things or tossing around terms like "most people"vs Apple's core market.

The real concern would be Apple catering to "most other people" who reviewers think don't know or care very much. My problem is Apple intentionally making a product that has corners cut. It's not their best. They know it, we all know it. The priority for Apple then becomes trying to make an inferior product for marketing reasons. It stops being about making the best product it can. At least Apple puts its current processor in such products though usually...watch, entry ipad, XR....which is key from making this too much of a worry.

NOOO!!! The main thing you see on a smartphone is ugly Android, followed by the forehead and chin of older iPhones, followed by the notch and then the bigger bezels of the XR. Before you see an off-axis pink shift, you even notice the not so deep black levels on an LCD screen.

But the main annoyance remains Android versus the price of iPhones. Ignorance is bliss. If you’re able to look at Android or swallow the price of an XS, good for you. But for the rest of us, we have no choice.

Wow, you don't really catch sarcasm do you? Also it's amazing how you jump to several conclusions despite me not even mentioning ANY of the stuff you spammed.

So let me simplify: I literally only just talked about off axis viewing being way more common than people seem to think, and sarcastically spoke about it not being a big issue, as some people say.

TIL how high strung Apple users can be

And I thought I was bad being a screen stickler

‘Attention to detail’ is an expression more than a reality ;)

I watched a bunch of reviews and no one else mentioned it, but I can see it happening in some of the videos as they tilt the phone. Same as the XS. The major difference when the XS AND XR are next to one another is that the XS screen is noticeably brighter in the same environment.

I am genuinely convinced observational reviewers don’t wanna be on bad terms with Apple so they gloss over things they may care about on a personal level but don’t wanna throw shade

Two more days and we will know for ourselves, but sounds more and more like 8+ is the last iPhone with an eye-friendly LCD screen. I hope Apple hasn't screwed this up. I find the shift in X and XS unacceptable for my use of the phone.
