I've used The Weather Channel app for years anyway.

Just yesterday, TWC app kept crashing on me. I figured I'd delete it and download again to maybe solve the problem I found that TWC had a whole new app. It took me a bit to get used to it, but it is quite nice.

I highly doubt Apple would ditch Yahoo data in the Stocks app. Yahoo Finance is probably Yahoo's most respected portal and is the #1 finance portal on the web.

Ditching Yahoo in the Weather app, on the other hand, makes sense as Weather Channel is superior and their data was just being rerouted through Yahoo anyway.

I am going to ask my friends at YAHOO about this.... Marissa is not a good CEO for YAHOO!

Still shocked that the weather app icon can't be made active (like clock) and display the current temp.

Obviously because that would drain way more battery than the clock.
You have to hit the network for the weather. Clocks can all be done on the system.

as long as we get something better than "Today's high will be" I'm happy, sometimes i need to know what the temp is Right Now not 5 hours from now.

Edit* I'm talking about the iPad btw, I use an iPad Mini as a cellphone.

Yes! iOS 7 irritates me a lot with that. I want the weather now, not the forecast for later. If I wanted the forecast, I'd open the bloody app!

I still side with those that feel they should dump the built in app all together and let us download what we want to use ourselves.

Or at least let us delete non-essential software, such as Stocks, Weather, Books (who reads books on a phone?). Anything that has a duplicate functionality provided by a 3rd party. I would argue that the Phone app, Settings and AppStore shouldn't be deletable. But Stocks, Weather? Come on.

Meh, this company can't even manage the comments section on their own news articles. It's like a frickin Klan rally. And now they just forgot that their contract is up? Now that's how you run a business! No loss here...

What's Yahoo's valuation these days? Could Apple afford to buy them? I'm not saying it's a good idea, rather just playing with the idea.

I think it's still way too high. Let me check on finance.yahoo.com ...
Oh wait. Yahoo!'s market cap is only $7.07 billion.

Let's do some math here:

Beats acquisition: $3.0 billion.
Yahoo! acquisition: $7.07 billion.
Screwing Google out iOS / OS X search: priceless.

Adding up the value of Alibaba, YJ, Yahoo core and its cash about of $62.6 billion

IMO, the "official" iOS 6/7 Weather app was a bit of a search engine trojan horse. Accidentally or intentionally clicking the "Y!" on the bottom left corner of the screen would take you to Yahoo, which would then prompt you to change your default search engine. I'm glad to see this go away as part of iOS 8.

These stock apps were necessary w/ the 1st iPhone w/o 3rd party apps. They just get in the way now those as 3rd party apps offer vastly better info. Why does Apple even fiddle with them at this point, but more importantly why does it require owners to keep them on their phones? I feel like I'm giving Apple free rent.

I'll be happy if TWC finally updates their MAX app. It's just languishing while the ad supported one gets updates.

What do people still use Yahoo! for? Serious question. I am ignorant in this respect...

Yahoo Groups is still doing pretty well. It is, arguably, better than any other mainstream web group platform, depending on your needs and requirements.

I've been using the Weather Channel app as my primary weather app for a while now.

The information was not only more robust but more accurate than the Yahoo sourced native Ios app.

There was always a discrepancy in the precipitation percentages amongst other things.

So this is very welcomed good news for me.

But Yahoo already uses Bing as their search engine, so there isn't really any point in buying them at this point. Except maybe for some search engine tech/patents for all of the search engines they've bought/owned in the past.

Have you seen the amount of bloatware on the Galaxy phones?

Also, how much storage space do you imagine the stock apps take up?

There are things I like about Yahoo, Flickr first and foremost, then Yahoo mail, and I even use their search some time. But weather? Is that really much of a crown jewel? This doesn't sound like that big a blow to Yahoo. Now, if Flickr and Yahoo Search were removed, it would be another matter.

I love the stocks app and weather app. I do like that there is a longer 9 day forecast in iOS 8. I don't care who provides the data as long as it is accurate.

Weatherbug has a free app (with IAP to remove ads) and the information is far more coherent than the new Weather Channel app. And otherwise I like the Weather Channel.

Yahoo's weather app on the iPad and iPhone is great. It gives the weather one needs is visually pleasing.
