But Yahoo already uses Bing as their search engine, so there isn't really any point in buying them at this point. Except maybe for some search engine tech/patents for all of the search engines they've bought/owned in the past.

Good point. Actually, going back, Yahoo! used Google's search engine until 2004, after which they tried combining all the search engine technologies they had bought (Inktomi, Overture, AltaVista etc.) Only to dump all of that and go with Bing in 2009.

So yeah, Yahoo! owns precious little search engine technology of any value. I suppose their market cap is due to the sheer amount of web traffic they get. To their portal (my.yahoo), search, sports, app data fetches etc. Apple evidently has much better things to do with all that cash.

These stock apps were necessary w/ the 1st iPhone w/o 3rd party apps. They just get in the way now those as 3rd party apps offer vastly better info.

Exactly the logic from those I've seen arguing that its well past time to dump them. Reduce the bloat.

Same logic that has me wanting an App Store for the Apple TV (especially if it's going to stay in the 8-16 GB range) and not liking that I have to download an app to get those third party keyboards on my iDevices

I don't want to see any one search engine on anything Apple. I would rather see a system in which searches are run on several engines and then aggregated, and presented to us. with a sorting system that uses date of last modification, title/metadata, etc rather than allowing folks to pay for high ranks. perhaps even allowing for keyword refinement after a search, rating items found and maybe even a "google alerts" type system.

As a result, the Weather app in iOS 8 now includes a nine-day weather forecast, up from five days in iOS 7, details such as sunrise/sunset times and a new "Today" weather summary located at the bottom of the app.
So just like the current Yahoo! Weather app then?

For current conditions, yes, they come from ASOS sites. However, forecasts are proprietary to The Weather Channel.

So they may say, but using what models? The outputs of the NAM, MRF, AVN, GFS, etc. All of which are published in real time.

Also, a lot more current conditions are collected than the ASOS sites.

The forecast models are more than just algorithms, they are sophisticated computer models developed and refined over decades. The differences between the apps are really a function of how much care they are taking to localize the forecasts and current conditions.

It's a matter largely of the degree of generalization. For instance, the NWS cranks out short-range forecasts using the AVN model, but this system was set up for aviation so it is localized mostly for airports (for creating TAFs, as pilots will know them). If the app is reporting this model's output, chances are it will give you a forecast for the AVN location closest to you, probably an airport, which might very well be not so close at all. They also supply 7-day zone forecasts covering large geographical areas, also quite generalized. But the NWS also has the ability to provide very detailed and localized hourly forecasts for every point in the U.S. based on a map-click. To my knowledge nobody has put that data into an app yet, though it would be the state of the art, and ideal.

Anyhow, for real weather geeks (and people who depend on knowing the most they can), all of the apps are a fail.
There's quite a bit of praise for Dark Sky in many places online.

Please Apple, let me delete both apps.

Finally.
Put them in a folder and move that folder off to a separate page if you want to. Simple. The vast majority of people don't have any issues with doing something simple like that and forgetting about it all.

Yah, I think Yahoo!'s days are numbered. They don't have a clean, clear focus so consumers don't identify with them for much anymore.
People keep on saying that year after year for years now, and clearly it's been happening, right? Yeah...

Yahoo is irrelevant.

Weather, stocks, search... it all comes from other places, making them an unnecessary middleman.

The only things they offer are easily created (and easily abandoned) email addresses for the crap you don't care about, and Flickr.

For some things that the case, for finance/stocks (along with sports, Flickr that you mentioned, and various other properties) it's pretty far from it.

What do people still use Yahoo! for? Serious question. I am ignorant in this respect...

Yahoo! Answers, and I heard they have some good sports stuff and fantasy football. That's about it.

I really hope they ditch Yahoo! for the Stocks app. I want to be able to open it and glance at the stock prices, but it often takes a while to load or doesn't load at all because Yahoo!'s servers are that bad. This stuff should have been 100% fail-proof a long time ago.

Nah, Mailinator and Gmail are better for that. Mailinator lets you type the username you want, and it gives it to you instantly with no signup (also no security since anyone can access it). Gmail is also better because if you register the email address "junkmail@gmail.com", then "junk.mail@gmail.com", "jun.k.mail@gmail.com", etc. also work. So you can sign up for stuff more than once.

If you've never heard of Mailinator, you should give it a try because it's really convenient.

----------

I use Yahoo Mail which is still one of the largest email providers on the net. I think they still have around 300 million users.

They've been hacked multiple times, and their servers sometimes fail to provide IMAP service for some reason. I wouldn't use it.

----------

I check it out everyday. I especially like the news links. You must be younger if you aren't investing and interested in the market.

Can you really count on the government to support you when you retire ?

Yeah, people should check it. It would make everyone less afraid of money, debt, and investing if they knew how any of it worked.

Weatherbug has a free app (with IAP to remove ads) and the information is far more coherent than the new Weather Channel app. And otherwise I like the Weather Channel.

Weatherbug is my favorite weather app on the iPhone, and I have several, including the native one, the Yahoo one, (which looks very similar to the native iPhone weather app, but more comprehensive in info), Weather Underground is good, and possibly the most comprehensive.. Weather Channel's own is also good.

My weather for several cities on My Yahoo has a TWC icon. It also gives me the weather for Sunnyvale, although I have never added that location.

On my Android phone, I have Weatherbug, TWC and AccuWeather. TWC also provides traffic conditions on its maps.

Yahoo! is known for their finance portal and coverage even more than other well known parts like sports. Not sure why you have issues with Stock app data, but on various iOS devices that I've been using it over the years the data always loads and loads quickly.

An interesting presentation, but my first foray into their web site forecasts wasn't too impressive in terms of results. For my location they report the current temperature at least 5° too high and the sky conditions as overcast. The sky is clear. They are also forecasting today's local high at 78° while the NWS point forecast is a more plausible 85. So we'll see about that.

This weather forecasting thing is difficult. It's about a lot more than pretty pictures.

The worst is Yahoo finance which links to all these stupid click bait articles (with headlines in the form of a question) from sites like motley fool, seeking alpha, wall street cheat sheet, etc.

They are unresponsive to problems we are having with our family group, and always posting weather / temperatures about places nowhere near and not one of my selected cities makes me feel they are doomed.

isolated personal anecdotal experiences mean just about nothing as far as it comes to performance and success of a company that deals with millions upon millions upon millions of customers constantly.

as long as we get something better than "Today's high will be" I'm happy, sometimes i need to know what the temp is Right Now not 5 hours from now.

Edit* I'm talking about the iPad btw, I use an iPad Mini as a cellphone.

I just asked Siri for the current temperature on my iPad and it provided the current temperature as well as the hourly forecast temperature for the next 12 hours.

----------

Hopefully, they'll add liveweather radar to the app. The Weather Channel's past and future radar in their app sucks.

I wish I could say the same. I've been through an original iPhone (found in e-waste bin :D), iPod touch 4th gen, iPhone 4, and iPhone 5. On all of them, I've had issues with my stock quotes not loading sometimes or taking about 30 seconds to load. In any case, it should be 100% reliable for everybody. However, it doesn't matter as much now because iOS 7 has the background refresh feature, so if service goes down, I should have pretty recent quotes anyway.

I know that Yahoo! has a lot of quality online finance tools, but Nasdaq and TD Ameritrade's free services are a lot better. I just want my quotes to be from Nasdaq so they'll be reliable.
