But Yahoo already uses Bing as their search engine, so there isn't really any point in buying them at this point. Except maybe for some search engine tech/patents for all of the search engines they've bought/owned in the past.

You'd get Flickr and Tumblr in that deal. Flickr would be better than iCloud Photo but it wouldn't be Apple centric so that's out. Tumblr just isn't the type of business Apple has historically been interested in. So a yahoo acquisition wouldn't be all that beneficial.

A Microsoft/Apple alliance (hearkening back to OpenDoc days for a type of evil alliance) for search would be really interesting though. Enough money and firepower to give real competition to Google. And since most people here think competition automatically makes better products (it doesn't automatically) it should be embraced by all...

Has long has it doesn't say it's raining outside when it's clearly sunny, I'm good.

Has for stocks, I never use it.

You want to know what the weather is right now. Take a step outside. Most reliable way I know of.

You should probably try one of these Weather apps, they also tell you what the weather's like in other places and what it might be like at other times

Yahoo's weather app on the iPad and iPhone is great. It gives the weather one needs is visually pleasing.

I agree one million percent! If you haven't looked at the Yahoo weather app, you owe it to yourself to peek. One of my favorites ever!

The Stocks app? You mean the app I've wanted to delete fr day one?

As for the weather app that is used in the notification center when you swipe down? How about telling me the temperature now? Not the high will be and it's partly cloudy.

I actually have to open an app to find out. So what's the purpose of notification center again?

Yahoo-driven app readings were always wrong in my area. If they do change the provider, I wonder if the new one will be any different.

I just use the radar app. I dont need to know the temperature. Here in North Florida, when its fall, it feels good, when winter, its cold, when its summer, its hot. The sun will rise and set no different than it did yesterday.

All I need to know is whether its going to rain or not. And Im just smart enough to read the radar myself.

Knowing if its supposed to rain a few days in advance is good to know too though. Radar app gives me that info too. Simple and easy...dont need anything else.

What do people still use Yahoo! for? Serious question. I am ignorant in this respect...

Flickr.com is what I use, which is owned by Yahoo. It gives me 1 TB of storage for all my photos and videos, without compression. And I can also edit my photos once they are on Flickr using their on site software.

:) :) :) :)

I love the stocks app and weather app. I do like that there is a longer 9 day forecast in iOS 8. I don't care who provides the data as long as it is accurate.

Forecasts, by definition, can only be of limited accuracy. The further out they go, the less accurate they will be.

As I've said in other threads on weather apps, none of these commercial weather providers are really doing their own forecasting. In the U.S., they are repackaging data from the NWS. The NWS in turn uses a suite of models of varying range and granularity, which are interpreted and blended by meteorologists into forecasts. The bottom line is, if you want the best forecasts available, you go to the source, not one of the commercial repackagers.

Love all the "Stock app is worthless" comments. I have a thought, maybe it's useful for, I dunno, people who invest in stocks? Just a guess. Might be going out on too much of a limb with that. Needless to say, I use the app daily, and while it certainly does contain room for improvement all in all it gives a pretty good glance at what is going on in the markets.

Flickr is my main Yahoo usage though. Flickr is well done, and despite all the noise that photographers make any time they change something, it's overall very well run IMO. Their agreement with Getty images gave me another side hobby that makes money, so I'll be forever grateful. Although with that said, they let THAT agreement expire too!

Even though yahoo took data from TWC it was always off for whatever reason.
No reason for a middle man.

Though with widgets now in NC you can put any app you want. Assuming they make a widget.

I understand the value of being in the default app, but the Apple Weather has always been several notches behind the others like TWC app, which is the one I use.

Yes, but you understand the value of being the default app. That's millions and millions of people who will use the Weather app that Apple provides. One only has to look at Google Maps drop in usage on iOS to see how much leverage being the default is.

Ultimately, it all comes from the NWS (in the U.S. anyway).
Raw data, yes, but some companies make or enhance predictions based on their own algorithms. You can sort of verify this if you use weather apps that source data from different companies. (e.g. Today vs. default weather app)

Have you seen the amount of bloatware on the Galaxy phones?

Also, how much storage space do you imagine the stock apps take up?

All of which is relevant how?

1) I'm talking about an iPhone. You bringing in the Galaxy is a complete non-sequitur.

2) The apps don't take up storage space but they do take up physical screen space that I have to look at --- they are not good apps and there is no reason for Apple to not make them removable except they don't want to. Apple isn't loaning us the phones please tell me why iPhone owners not wanting these apps should have no option to get rid of them other than jailbreak or bury them in a folder on the very last page?

At this point, Yahoo needs to merge with Blackberry so they can go out of business at the same time.

And I really hate the stock weather app. The only time I use it is when I hit the wrong button. I prefer accuweather.

The forecast models are more than just algorithms, they are sophisticated computer models developed and refined over decades. The differences between the apps are really a function of how much care they are taking to localize the forecasts and current conditions.

It's a matter largely of the degree of generalization. For instance, the NWS cranks out short-range forecasts using the AVN model, but this system was set up for aviation so it is localized mostly for airports (for creating TAFs, as pilots will know them). If the app is reporting this model's output, chances are it will give you a forecast for the AVN location closest to you, probably an airport, which might very well be not so close at all. They also supply 7-day zone forecasts covering large geographical areas, also quite generalized. But the NWS also has the ability to provide very detailed and localized hourly forecasts for every point in the U.S. based on a map-click. To my knowledge nobody has put that data into an app yet, though it would be the state of the art, and ideal.

Anyhow, for real weather geeks (and people who depend on knowing the most they can), all of the apps are a fail.

That stock app is just wasted space anyways.

I use it frequently.

Yah, I think Yahoo!'s days are numbered. They don't have a clean, clear focus so consumers don't identify with them for much anymore.

Yeah. Their stock's performance really reflects your thoughtful analysis of their situation

I'm not too concerned about more functionality. How about the actual weather data be more accurate.

Weatherbug and Wunderground are much more accurate than the Weather Channel data. IMO
