I am not sure if this is an Apple Watch type product, or a Newton. I am leaning towards the latter opinion.

I am an early adopter on Apple products a lot of the time. I bought a series 0 watch, the first iPad, the first gen Airpods. But this is a hard pass.

The products I listed above that I bought I could envision a use case immediately where it enhanced my daily life, but this? It’s big, and heavy and has an extremely short battery life. Despite the efforts of the team to make it transparent, it cuts you off from the outside world. It will likely make a lot of people nauseous.

I would be all over a Google glass device with AR enchancements to normal vision, but this isn’t that.

Although I personally feel the product is extremely niche, way over priced and quite frankly won’t likely be bought by the masses as it effectively doesn’t allow you to do anything more effectively just in a different way and for a much higher price.

HOWEVER, I can fully understand why Apple have launched it, they are simply looking at the long term goal of this product line… this is basically a beta product in a long line of beta re-iterations until their final goal of the AR Glasses, and as a company why not make some $$$ along the way of developing that.

So is it for me, no definitely not, is it for 99% of the Apple user base probably not, would I be interested in it in 10-15 years time when they have managed to develop a pair of glasses that does what the headset does and more which has the potential to completely replace your need for an iPhone altogether…. 1000% yes!

Cool tech and what I would have expected (Minority Report movie) but this a very personal experience and it’s hard to justify spending this kind of money unless you live a very solo lifestyle.

Can’t imagine what a cheaper version would/wouldn’t do but over the year’s Apple software quality and features haven’t been the best so it’s a huge gamble that I won’t help Apple pay the bill for.

Okay, listen, I respect the work that went into this. I can also respect this is a kind of beta hardware for something that might be practical one day in the future. Apple can totally afford to play around with ideas. So, I'm not knocking them for working on this.

However, let's be honest. How many people want to wear this thing on their head instead of watching their 65" OLED TV (or bigger for the price of this thing)? Who wants to take this on a trip instead of a trusty MacBook Pro that has 16 hours of battery life? Who wants to use this thing to write forum posts? Who wants to use this thing to do much of anything? Not me.

In fact there is only one thing I can see this being useful for given the battery life, but they aren't going to market it for that.

It seems to be still a free country..
There are those who want to tie themselves to screens and get excited when the iPhone, iPad, Watch and Mac grow an inch, and those who prefer to leave this pleasure to others.

I'm looking forward to when there's just a chip to insert in various types of glasses for this.
Apple could even evolve these kind of glasses. That could be revolutionary.
For sunglasses or whatever glasses, depending on type of chip.

People with small apartments that don't have room for giant TVs. Not a problem in most of USA, I know, but I think my relatives in Japan who live in tiny apartments are going to love this. Maybe not at the current price point, but if it comes down to around $1000-1500, I can see them going for it.
You thinking of getting one, I?

What if they want to watch tv with company?

Just curious the audio seems to not be private like the person sitting next to you would prob hear it and get annoyed unless you can make it go to your AirPods 🤷🏼‍♀️
Since Apple literally showed that airplane example in the video, I’m sure they’ve got that figured out.

Everyone will just wear a headset? And when they want to talk with each other, they will just turn their heads like normal and see each other? Apple demoed this. Even when you're fully immersed, if a human is close to you, it will automatically show the human.
Lol, this is the very definition of a solution in search of a problem.

Back in 2012-2015 when 3D TVs came out people didn't even want to wear 3D glasses at home, why would they want to wear this?

Who? Me. I’ve been waiting 20 years for decent HMD tech to come out. I bought my “last” TV 9 years ago, hoping I’d never have to buy another. I’ve bought large laptops for 20 years, fighting with them being too large for travel and too small for work the entire time. I’ve spent 15 years squinting at tiny phone screens. And now the end is finally in sight. Any size screen wherever I am, for any task I’m doing? That’s always been the dream. $3500 is super steep, but it’s still less than the cost of devices this replaces once the execution is there.
I love how people can’t see that this spells the end for screens

That's funny you are living a magical world where everyone has one.

It's literally two screens right in front of your eyes.

Saying this spells the end of screens is like saying headphones spelled the end of speakers.

But it is interesting to me that this thing seems to only make sense if it can replace a bunch of other stuff. Why does it have to be a zero sum game?

They haven't said how much this weighs, have they?

I think the eyes will look strange or creepy, especially when viewed from the side.

Everyone comparing this to the iPhone, saying that people doubted that too- there’s a major difference here (it’s not the price). With iPhone Apple had a clear idea of what the purpose was- a phone, an iPod, a real mobile browser. The hardware needed some time to catch up, but the idea was solid. In this case it’s clear that Apple has no “killer app” for this thing, anymore than any of the previous attempts by other companies. The hardware on this thing is incredible, and I don’t think any other company will be able to match it for a very long time. It solidifies my view that Apple miles and miles ahead of anyone else in hardware. But the core issue with these headsets has never been the hardware- it’s the fact that they are headsets. And Apple still hasn’t solved that problem. AR glasses that were actual glasses (or contact lenses!) would actually be revolutionary- but that’s years away. And I don’t really want to live in that world anyways.

AVP also makes me consider having a TV-less home in the future…
Ah yes! One pair for each family member. No more arguing about what to see. And with ACN I don’t even have to listen to them. Finally we can live separate lives!

Lately it has been so annoying that I could see them, but since they were all with their separate headphones listening to some book they couldn’t hear me. Now we don’t even have to see each other! Perfect isolation Thank you Tim!
