Attached some photos using my wife’s iPhone 11, both screens set to 50 percent brightness with auto brightness and True Tone on (how I prefer to use the phones)

It’s been confirmed that True Tone is more aggressive this year on the 12. You need to try it with True Tone off.

I agree that it seems like TT is very aggressive on the 12 (much more than my X for sure). But has it been "confirmed" by Apple that this is intentional?

Not directed at you purpleparrot, but just a general comment. Problem with this whole yellow screen/TT issue is that everyone views it differently and has preference. Some people like cooler displays, some like warmer. Some people work at computer screens all day for years and are used to a certain look, some aren't. Same with your phone. I used my X for 3 years. I got used to that screen. Now with another device, even if the screen was only slightly different, I'd likely notice it right away.

One person may say a screen looks perfect and another person looking at the same screen will say it looks awful. It's almost impossible to judge based only on online forums whether this is a real issue (though I am sure there are some actually defective units as would happen with the launch of any product).

I'd still say it is very unlikely that there are huge variations between the vast majority of screens. But it's probably very common that there are minor variations (and what I mean by "minor" is that you wouldn't notice unless the phones were held up next to each other).

You’re right in that turning off True Tone does bring the displays closer to parity. I enjoy the True Tone feature and will be keeping it on regardless, feels easier on the eyes to me. Here’s a comparison pic with True Tone off and then again on between my iOS devices.
I’ve uploaded unedited jpegs also from my Sony a7iii comparing 11 pro 12 pro and iPad Pro
To me it seems like a matter of personal preference. All these displays have different characteristics. I tend to prefer the iPad Pro best of the bunch

Well I got my hands on a 12 and it’s display to my eyes are better than the pro lol part of me feels like I’m getting caught in the weeds here smh but here is how they look. Too many choices and variables this year where in the past which iPhone to get felt like a given smh.
11 pro on left 12 pro in the middle and the 12 just unboxed on the right

That 12 looks pretty good. Doesn’t have that weird orange cast the 12 Pro does.

Yeah the 12 is much better than the 12 pro but they both look trash compared to the 11 Pro IMO

What made ya try a 12 in particular out of curiosity? Weight / cost / color? Just wanting to try your luck with a different model for panel lottery?

Weight, cost, and panel lottery lol and overall being stuck in a paradox of choice weighing what matters to me for the next year of phone use

FWIW, the panel does look better to my eyes too. I think I'd be happy with that one

what color did ya get?

I noticed that my iPhone 12 Pro 256 was more yellow than my X on the first day of using it one week ago.
I then followed this Thread very closely.
Today I went to the apple Store to return it. I was able to compare it to two other iPhone Pro Display Phones. One had the same yellow tint as mine. The other one was perfectly normal.

So my opinion is now: There are really good ones and bad ones out there. But also under the display phones.

Has Apple ever explained why they don't give us a real ability to adjust the display? I mean, every TV, computer monitor, and any other display I've ever owned lets me tweak it to my liking. Why does Apple refuse to do this and instead deal with likely thousands of returns every launch? Makes no sense to me.

As mentioned control but also

It would be a soft admission of fault

All their panels are “within spec”

Im upset at myself. I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. First time this has ever happened. I now enter the screen lottery. I was able to get a replacement through the online store as a one time courtesy so ill have at least a new retail one soon. Gotta admit, apples customer service is very good.

And you had a good screen?

Damn

Fwiw my dog chewed through my “perfect” X. He loved the smell of the black leather case and I left it on the couch

I was devastated. This was like my fourth unit too or something and I considered myself lucky at that.

The replacement was serviceable but not the same. Was Good incentive to trade up to xr since I had no loyalty to it

Gotta hold onto good units like Gollum and his ring... if possible

They wouldn't really have to admit fault though. Just say it's a new feature rather than saying it is to correct any issue. People would love it and they would be praised. They would also have FAR less returns at every launch with people playing the screen lottery. Just the fact that "screen lottery" is a pretty well-known term makes me think that they get a significant number of otherwise perfectly working phones returned every launch.

I guess I just don't get why Apple would have an incentive to "control" how my screen looks once I have bought it.

Got mine yesterday. Great display. Clearly TT is more aggressive, but when it is off I see only a marginal difference to my XS. I prefer TT as it is easier on the eye. I disable night shift in favor or Dark Mode. Chapter closed - for me anyway.

Yeah getting a not broken phone, you can’t be too upset

They swapped my X for free since it was clear my dog blasted through it and it wasn’t a drop

Taking blame fully I think made them more inclined to help. Wasn’t like I pretended I just woke up and it was that way and “have no idea” how it happened but it’s all apple’s fault

Apple customer service IS every once in a while truly exemplary

I’m grappling with returning my 12. I have to keep True Tone off and it looks mostly normal but it still has a greenish yellow hue compared to my XR and iPad Pro ....maybe that inherent to the other flaws of OLED? Apple makes the best LCDs on the planet for all their devices and it seems so silly to have raised the price of these phones forcing us to use OLEd.....oh and the OLED off axis color shift is obnoxiously bad.

Just installed 14.2RC. True Tone seems much better now on my pro. Doesn’t go to extreme orange anymore. Still have the yellow tint on whites though. Probably in my head but less noticeable?

Sorry I missed it. Why are you comparing two different technologies? Apple says in their literature that there is color shift with all the super XDR displays and that it’s inherent in the nature of OLED. LCD doesn’t have that. But you keep drawing this comparison so catch me up on why you’re doing it

The 12 and the 12 Pro look equally bad to me. The 11 Pro looks amazing. I would keep that 11 Pro in a heart beat and wait a couple of months or even to the 13 at this point.

They should add the setting but bury it in the accessibility area next to the color tint section. The majority of people won't even notice therefore they avoid the appearance of admitting fault.
