Went from apple store, could not exchange my MBP because the 14 day exchange period was over.

I've showed the problem and they agree about the issue "visible yellow tint on bottom edge of display" they offered me a one time replace "as an exception".

I have received the service authorization but I'm still waiting the arrival of the replacement display (It was ordered because they had not in stock at that time).

They told me that even the replacement could not be perfect at all, but they are going to try to solve the issue.

All the MBPs in store showed a different degree of the problem, the genius insisted that there are "acceptable variations" in this kind of screens.

As an almost lifetime apple user and graphic artist i am disappointed with this kind of issues. We are talking about the top of the line, professional targeted laptop computers from apple at a premium price.

So waiting a few weeks to buy a new MBP could be the right choice?

I hope so, but i think they told me that only for reassuring me. The genius all the time insisted in the "normality" of having these kind of "minor issues" in this type of screens.

Can you describe what problem you had with your screen? My yellowing is more in the bottom right corner.

It seems to me that when viewing the screen dead on as normally using the MBP the area towards the top right is more blue and towards the bottom right is more warm. I notice a small amount of yellowing on the bottom 1/4 too:

my pic I made in Photoshop shows what I mean, but obviously I've used more blue/yellow than my actual screen.

I agree that there is a problem with many of these screens, but the viewing angle itself makes such a difference.

When looking at the laptop normally your eyes are nearer in direct line with the top of the screen, so when looking towards the bottom left or right, or directly down (at the Dock) the viewing angle changes. Put your head down so that you are looking at the screen at keyboard level and see the colours change, including a lessening of the yellow tinge. Also notice that the top of the screen changes too, when looking up at it.

I thought it was just me thinking the bottom of the screen was lighter than the top! Can anyone please confirm that their anti-glare 17" new MBP screen is showing the same pictures on top an bottom in the test? - ie no tinge

Tint

MAN! You guys made me so concerned! I became excited with the BTS starting. I was planning on getting a new Macbook pro 15'' tomorrow. My mom was getting it for me as a birthday/graduation gift.
I just don't know what to do now...yellow tinge, freezing, dead pixels....

just stay away from this forum unless you need some advice on something. otherwise its just full of ocd people huddled in corner mumbling to themselves.

For me the yellow tint in minimal, so im pretty much over it, and I'm keeping this MBP. I still know it's there, so it does annoy me a little. Right enough if I didn't come across this thread I'd be none the wiser.

No other problems with my screen such as dead pixels, and my MBP has never once froze.

It's a great computer and it has a really really REALLY nice high res bright screen, so don't be put off by this thread. Just make sure you check your MBP over when you get it and return it if you find any dead pixels (that you can get on any laptop of any make).

There's always a shift in colours on laptop displays due to the viewing angle, where your eyes are in line of compared to the screen, and how much to the left or the right you're viewing, and how much the lid is tilted.

The positives of the MPB outweigh the small yellow tint issue that you might not even notice or find on yours.

I have a core i7 17" macbook pro non-glossy and is passed the yellow but it had one stuck pixel.

I've received my i5 2.4 GHz MBP with the high res glossy 2 days ago and it passed both the yellow tinge test and the dead pixel test. The screen model is 9CB6.

We are graphics professionals and the screen on 90% of the Apple laptops made with LED backlighting have a yellow tint in the bottom third of the screen. THAT SUCKS. If you can not see it, then your vision sucks. I don't know what else to say??

Got my 4th replacement

Was a LG screen versus the other 3 which were Samsungs

I thought this screen was okay, with minor yellow tinging, but it was livable.

However, brightness didn't seem right, so I took it to the Apple Store to compared with a floor model.

Turns out the screen wasn't as bright, lacked contrast, and was just poor in general (but only minor yellow tinging :p )

Salesperson said they also noticed a considerable difference, and he would've swapped it out on the spot if it hadn't been a BTO/CTO

Anyway, I called Apple and asked for a refund on this one.
I will probably just shell out for the i7 (originally got the 2.4 i5) just so I can take it back to an actual store if there's problems (live near 2 Apple stores)....wasted over a month already shipping 4 units back and forth...I just want a working notebook

I just picked up my new i5 17" MBPro on Thurs, and overall am impressed with with design and beauty of this machine. It runs quiet (I can hear the hard drive slightly in a very quiet room, but do not consider it loud or out of the ordinary), and the trackpad is lovely! The keyboard is also very comfortable and the design when looking at the machine overall is elegant..

I will say however I am a bit disappointed in the display... My MBPro seems not to be able to make a really nice bright white; the whiteness while I am on web pages (like this one) seems to be a bit dingy and yellowish/brownish, I was hoping for a brighter white.. I did play around with the Screen Calibration tool but was a bit out of my league with expert mode and was not able to improve the display... It may just be that this is the way whites are on a laptop screen...

I also have noticed that the bottom half of my screen is more brownish/yellowish as I go down the screen... This could be due to the panel characteristics, as I also experience the tinge on the left or right of the panel if I move my head slightly... A few folks have commented on this phenomenon with this type of screen, and I guess I may just have to live with it... Also this is a 17" panel which I think would provide the tinting more than a smaller screen....

Also, I did some google searches and folks have been complaining about yellow tinge on the bottom half of MacBook Pro screens since 2007!! So, again I am going to chalk it up to this type of screen..

The other thing I have noticed is when the LCD screen is all white I can see a grayish shadow going down the length of the screen.. It is barely visible but I do notice it at times when I am on a webpage that is primarily white... I am going to have a Genius take a look next week to see if this is normal..

Overall though, I LOVE this machine... Just wish that it did a bit of a better job with brighter whites on the LCD... Maybe I just need to play with the calibration tool a bit more...

I figure I should add my new 17" i7 AG to the list of non-lemons. My screen is great--no dead/stuck pixels, and no yellow tint. In the "gray boxes test", the bottom of the screen is just slightly brighter than the top, but this effect is greatly diminished by adjusting my viewing angle.

As for the previous poster, the native white balance on mine is definitely a bit warm (which I prefer)--but I imagine you could get something closer to a neutral white by playing with the Calibrate function in Sys Prefs. The floor model at the Apple store seemed to have a much colder display.

Second Replacement

Going for second screen replacement.

First had yellow tinge, second was perfect in color but when machine heats up it appears a band in the lower part of the screen and you can see anything behind the band.

Seems to be an old problem:

Still waiting for the replacement screen for arriving at the apple store, can not use my mbp like it is, I'm getting mad...

Apple store always offered reparation, but what about all my wasted time?

Genius just apologize for "bad luck"

So I placed my MBP 2010 15" with the HR / AG screen next to dad's MBP 2009 17" with the same HR / AG, and in comparison newer MBP appeared considerably worse with grey tint in the lower part of the screen and a very bright dock.

Unfortunately I don't have a worthy camera to make a photo.

The problem we're talking about here is definitely not a "common issue of all TN panels".

I agree. Apple's QC is really slipping.

One could also say that MR forum's OCD is really climbing. :p

Hehe perhaps.

The only rule I have when it comes to potential OCD inducing issues is that as long as it doesn't directly affect what I am doing/using the product day to day then I can live with minor defects.

Unfortunately this yellow tinge is distracting a lot of the time and it detracts from my productive usage of the laptop.

The yellow tinge for graphic design or photographic work is a real issue, after two screen replacements finally got a screen enough good for working on the go.

Maybe a better QC policy can save Apple a lot of money in replacements and of course better products out of the line for happy customers.

I received my replacement 17" MBP i7 today. I am happy to report that the screen is beautiful. No yellow tinge or dead pixels.

Excellent customer service from PowerMax.com I highly recommend these folks. I will now send in my PowerBook for the trade in.

I am finally a happy camper... :D
