Hey guys, I had to go through 5 iPad's before I got a screen I was happy with.

Well.. to be fair, my first Black iPad didn't have a yellow tint, but it was much more blue. Still bearable, but I decided I wanted a white iPad instead. I kept the black one as a reference to compare with and even the clerk at the Apple Store admitted that there was a huge difference. 4 boxes of yellow screens stacked up on the desk and then the manager turned up and said the one I was opening was the last one, as I was burning through their stock.

Luckily, that happened to be the one without the yellow tint. Still wasn't as blue as the Black iPad, but that was fine. It felt more neutral and natural and the screen brightness was great.

So don't give up guys! Insist on getting the right iPad. After all, you're paying for a brand new device. It should be perfect out the box. Don't settle for something you're not happy with.

(PS: This was in the Stratford, UK Apple Store)

Awesome! Did manager at store give that to you or did you order online? What issues did you have with it? Dead pixel or screen display issue?

I ordered online, so the credit and smart cover was given directly from Apple.

I'd gone through two replacements and Apple stuffed up the return process on the 2nd one, which I made them well aware about lol!

The original iPad had a dark stain down one side of the display, the second has a piece of hair under the display. My third iPad is great!

Congrats, I got lucky on my first replacement, the brightness is much better also.

Still Searching

I'm returning iPad 3 number three (all black, 16GB, ATT) today because of the yellow tint issue. I did a return/refund and rebuy each time, just to keep a full 14-day window where I can return with a full refund.

The first one (production week 9) was just horrible, with a yellow hue everywhere that didn't improve with use. The second one (production week 5) was better, but the left side (in portrait) had a vertical yellow tint bar that wouldn't go away. The third one (production week 11) is the best so far, but it still has a yellow tint bar on the left side that I can't live with. I did some of the burn-in tricks on all 3, BTW.

The uneven yellow tint issue is different from the overall warmth of the display (which can also vary in my experience). I've looked at a number of iPads (3's and 2's) in two different Apple stores using this YouTube video as a test case: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaqe1qesQ8c (you can search for "Philips Test Pattern" in the YouTube app to find it).

With that test pattern, the results fall into two main classes. On my original iPad 1, iPhone 4, and most iPad 2's, the yellow areas look yellow, but not super-bright, electric yellow, and the bottom-right colored rectangle looks blue-ish. On most (but not all) iPad 3's, the yellow is very bright (what I would call electric yellow or neon yellow) and the bottom-right colored rectangle looks purple.

I'm would love to find an iPad 3 that looks like my old iPad or my iPhone, but at this point, I'd take one that is simply uniform without a yellow-tinted bar anywhere. I haven't decided if I'm just gonna get a refund this time and wait a few months, or try again. It will depend on the people at the Apple Store, probably. I really want an iPad 3, but I want one that I won't regret getting every time that keyboard pops up.

Hope this helps.

Called Apple to ask about my refund (2 weeks late) but instead was pitched to try a replacement after profuse apologising, and that they'd even throw in a smartcover for free and do priority dispatch. I have a feeling i'll still get a terrible screen.

Anyone know if you can return replacement units?

Ive been looking at the iPad 3 screen images posted on this thread on a brand new high end monitor.
When I set the colour profile to 6500K, everything looks pissy, at 9300k its way too blue but they yellow screens dont look to bad, at 6500K they still look a little yellow but at sRGB they all look very good. If only Apple let people set their own color profile in the settings!

Originally bought my iPad 3 from Comets, it had perfect white uniform screen with no bleeding but had to replace it two days later as a bad pixel appeared :(

The replacement looked great in the Apple store, no dust, dead pixels, no bleeding but when I got home I noticed the top half was very yellow while the bottom half was lovely and white. It looked perfect in store due to the bright lighting.

Did an express replacement this time, received the replacement in 24hrs

This one is perfect, stunning white uniform screen, no dead pixels or dust and no bleeding :D:D

The build date on the first one from Comets on launch day was from week 7, the second brown box Apple store replacement was week 9. The brown box express replacement is from week 1.

My iPad model is the white iPad 3 64gb 4g.

Returned due to dust

So sadly my decent iPad had to go back because of a nice big speck of dust under the glass.....annoying to look at.

Swap went fine.....looked good in the store, but we all know about how these look in the brightly lit Apple stores.

Can someone take a look at these two photos.....can you tell if there is a grey/green/darker tint to the left side?

I swear a see it.....but don't know if I'm going crazy!

Thanks!

-Kevin

To tell you the truth. I can't really see anything wrong with it. Maybe my eyes don't see the difference, but it looks fine to me. I see what might be a tiny discoloration on the right, but is that the camera or something else, I don't know. But not without (zooming) simulating the idea of pushing my head right up close to the right edge of the device.

Looks ok to me, I would be perfectly happy with that screen.

Only the middle part looks ok. There is a good way to test: Go to http://www.apple.com/support/ and then compare the five boxes at the second row to see if they all look white and same on your screen.

Green on the left, reddish on the right. Viewing it on my iPad 2.

I wouldn't be happy with that I'm afraid. For £200 perhaps. For £600 no way.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm torn....I might head back in tonight to see about exchanging it. Problem is I'm beyond the 14 day anything goes return period.....and this is subtle in person (to me I seem to notice it).

The took the last one because I don't think they can argue with something under the screen....that's not right.

Man it looks fine to me. Looks even, and no dark corners. Replace at your own risk, you may get one that is worse. If it were me, I wouldn't risk it.

Does it really bother you, or does it bother you that others "think" they see an issue?

I only posted these on here because I noticed it. I still do. Wife doesn't notice anything.

Regardless.....Apple didn't see anything either.....they wouldn't replace it. I understand (kinda).....it is difficult to see, but it's one of those things that once you notice....you see it all the time.

I'm more mad at myself for not noticing the dust on the first one until after the 14 days were up.

Note to anyone getting a new iPad......EXAMINE it very closely during those first 14 days. You lose all power after that.....even if it's just something YOU see.....you can still return within 14 days no questions.

Thanks everyone for looking....and good luck. I think Apple has a minor issue here that I hope they solve.....these screens, while crystal clear, are very inconsistent.

One thing I have noticed with my second replacement, is that the bottom LH corner in portrait mode seems slightly 'dark' on a light background, as if the LEDs aren't quite bright enough in that corner.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Considering the rest of the screen in perfect, I'm not too concerned....yet.

Mine is dark at left and right edges. I am really willing to see a perfect iPad 3 screen with even brightness and color. :(

Did you point out the dust or just the uneven screen? If there's dust they're usually pretty good about swapping those out.

They were awesome with the dust. That was my launch day iPad. They replaced that this morning no questions.

I opened the new one (this one) and set it up as a blank iPad in the store. It looked fine there....but it's really hard to tell with those lights. Even out in my car in a parking garage it looked ok.

It wasn't until I got home and did the restore and started reading my book that a noticed it.

Maybe it's just my eyes today......my wife swears I'm losing it

EDIT: The one thing I am disappointed in with the new iPad are the viewing angles. Seems these new screens (both one's I had did it and the ones in the store) .... tilting causes a lot of darkening of the screen and to me....color shifts. My iPad 2 was not nearly as bad.

I can see the shift pretty easily but I'm also using a reasonably well-calibrated monitor to look at it, and I also know what I'm looking for. With that said, yours looks about as good as I'm generally used to seeing with these displays. That is, I've seen a lot, and most are worse. That doesn't mean you shouldn't care; it's your choice and you're the one who has to live with it. However, I'd say this one looks better than most I've seen. This particular shift I, at least, visually associate it with a lot of IPS displays generally; I've seen it on desktop displays and tablets including the ipad.

If this were me, if the display is bright and fairly uniform, and it doesn't have dust or dead/stuck pixels, I'd be inclined to keep it. I'm not sure about the ipad 3, but the previous two generations seemed to come in two general levels of brightness, spaced about 50 nits apart.

Aside from that, my bet is that the last one you had wasn't any better, but you're sensitizing to issues as time goes on such that what you notice now you wouldn't have noticed earlier. Visual perception can be trained such that, over time and with more opportunities to train, things just look different.

Again, though, I do want to emphasize that I think the most important thing is that you're happy with your purchase. If you are unhappy such that, if you don't return the unit, you won't be happy, I'd say return it. I'm mostly just trying to advise you about your prospects of success in terms of getting a better unit, given what I'm seeing in your picture.

Thanks for your post. No doubt that I'm "looking" for problems now and likely my eyes are seeing what they want to see....since Apple couldn't see anything and my wife can't (no matter how many times I beg her to look)!!

I am happy with the iPad.....coming from the iPad 1 and then the iPad 2....the screen clarity is awesome!

Well, it's not an illusion; I saw it easily. You don't need to think you're crazy or something. My point was more that (1) you're likely to notice issues more easily as you're more experienced and attentive, and (2) this is something I strongly associate with these panels generally, meaning I don't expect you'll find one that outright doesn't have this effect. It seems to be something about the technology. However, one thing that's worth mentioning is maximum screen brightness and color temperature seem to affect how easy it is to see the shift. I've found bright, neutral-to-warm screens are easier to see it on than cool-temperature screens, but all of the ones I've ever seen seem to have had it (and I've seen a lot!). Again, though, I've seen this on IPS desktop displays and other tablets, too.

So overall, I was mostly trying to offer reassurance. All things considered, it looks like you got one on the rather high-end in terms of overall quality.
