Battery Re-calibration results

In case anyone is wondering, here are the results of the test battery recalibration I ran to see if I could fix the poor battery performance I had after upgrading to 4.2.

Test Criteria:
3G ON, Wifi and full brightness. Home screen and no apps running after a reboot.

Before Calibration:
1 % drop every 3.44 mins

After Calibration:
1% drop every 40 mins

If this is accurate and you experience problems with battery performance after upgrading to 4.2 like me, I suggest doing a battery calibration like I did:
1) Charge to 100%
2) Allow to discharge completely to 0%.
3) Charge to 100%.

*** update - drop from 100% to 99% took 40 mins, but the drop from 99% to 98% took only 5 mins, so this does not seem reliable... anyone know a good way to test the battery reliably and fairly? ***

Can anyone tell me about the iPad's multitasking performance/usability in light of its lower RAM when compared to the iPhone 4? THANK YOU.

Safari is still the weakest link... reloading all the damn time!! GAH! This thing needed 512MB RAM, period.

As soon as iPad 2 is out, I will ditch my iPad 1 with glee.

My impression of iOS 4.2 on the iPad is summed up as follows:

About goddamn time.

The biggest problem I have with it on my iPad is that it is not jailbroken. I am so used to a jailbroken iPad that I haven't even picked it up since updating to 4.2. I can't go back to 3.2.2 after having the 4.2 features and 4.2 is next to useless without jailbreaking (iAds and Safari without adblock be damned).

Why did you update to 4.2GM if there isn't a jailbreak for it ? It seems odd that you say you haven't picked it up since and can't roll back because you miss 4.2 features! Contradicting yourself there a bit. Does jailbreaking it really add so much? Despite a few niggles for me and others here and there, it does pretty much what it's sold for doesn't it?

I'm noticing some battery issues as well, particularly a drain when it is in 'sleep' mode.

I was reading a bit before bed, put it down with around 62% battery life and this morning I had 41%.

I rebooted and didn't open any apps. Since 7:30 AM (it's now 9:56AM) I'm down to 33%.

Going to try calibration and drain it fully.

Battery issue

I made an appointment at the genius bar because of the battery issue I was having and they gave me a new iPad to try. To be honest though the new one which I installed 4.2GW does not seem much better - I think this is likely to be a problem with 4.2 rather than hardware....

Correct. Europe has a population of some 840m compared to the US's 300m, so greater reputational harm has already been done over the past few days. This bug has been mentioned in the news all over Europe, leading to much Apple ridiculing.

840m peasents, the US is the only place that matters. If you don't like it buy a Ueropean product.

I'll really miss the orientation lock. It probably makes sense to make iPad behave as iPhone, but on the other hand I'm not going to get unexpected phone call on my iPad which makes the silent switch pointless. I really liked how the holding down the button for decreasing the volume makes it silent, despite what all my friends thing.

I know that if I set up to watch a movie, I don't want emails or push notifications disrupting me. That's what the silent switch is for - turn off the notifications. I find that if I have a movie where the audio is relatively low, I have to jack up the sound to max. If I get an email during the movie, that sound will play at max volume and just isn't wanted.

Whether or not "silent" should have been the soft-switch in the multitasking bar as opposed to orientation lock, well, that's for Stevo to decide.
