running the stress test on my maxed out 2012 rMBP 15" (2.7 i7 quad) and the speeds *never* fall below 2,7 ghz. (+ its running at 85 degrees C...)

Same here. Running my 2.3GHz 2013 MBP and its smooth sailing at 2.8GHz

No, they didn't. There are a thousand alternatives to this disaster. But they value form over function.

So... stop using Chrome?
I just uninstalled it. Second picture shows what happened after uninstall

I saw similar results in my Cinebench testing as my Lightwave3D testing. Single core performance around 4.0ghz to 4.3ghz. Multi-core 2.3ghz to 2.6ghz. I consider this reasonable as I've gotten much the same "drop" with other laptops featuring large core counts.

I realize that as I have a imac, and an older i5 to boot, and therefore my experience may be different, but Prime95 will
drive my temperature up to 100C, my power consumption to 72 W, and my frequency down to 3.2 Ghz

4 instances of yes will only consume 58 W, permit 3.7 Ghz turboboosting, and produce 95 C (which, in my case, is not enough to spin up the fan)

It should be 8 instances of yes, 1 for each thread. Basically repeat yes > /dev/null & for each thread.

I was trying to standardise our testing a bit, with Prime95 you can get different results depending on the version and settings.

I've been editing my post with some data from a current i7 desktop, not with the latest version but pre and post AVX anyways.

Thanks for the reply.

You're very welcome. Just to make sure we're testing the same thing, I used the Blend torture test with 8 threads. Default settings, basically.

I wasn't really trying to line up with anyone, rather simply demonstrate that the AVX instructions drive power consumption, and therefore TDP thru the roof. I think it's on Intel for this aspect, since it doesn't seem to remain within the CPU's design threshold for TDP when these instructions are used on all cores.

In my case we're talking an additional 25W consumed when using the same test with AVX. That increase is more than 25% of the base TDP design parameter on my desktop CPU.

Yeah but then you'd have to open it up every 3 months to blow the dust out of it.

I don't think it's the fans, in my testing having them manually at 100% only delayed the inevitable. The CPU just dumps too much heat for the cooling system to handle. The fans go up to 100% eventually by themselves, but they are insufficient.

True. But still I checked few of my MBPs - 2012, 2013 2014 and 2016 and the fan only kicks in at around 85C. I think its way to high. If they set it up on lets say 60 I would think that issue would not be all that pronounced.

I'm not sure what other choices they had honestly. Between us pushing them for pro performance & faster upgrade cycles and Intel giving them a hot potato for a CPU, they did their best.

They could have upgraded the cooling system a bit though, I dunno, make it out of copper or make it bigger or something. Just a little bit, to let us know they care, you know?
Not sure what was done or what could have been done, but I don't think this testing is any surprise to Apple is what I'm saying. This is very basic.

#fakenews

Many of these tests have now been debunked by good Apple people on Twitter who I trust.
I hope you are right. Please cite sources. Unlike many people here on MR I actually want to see Apple succeed and not fail. Seems like there are a lot of people here that just get off on every opportunity to attack Apple. Like a pack of rabid wolves. If a person hates Apple so much why in the world are they living on MR!?

Didn't they throttle the processors in every machine since Intel came out?

MacBooks, MBAs, retina mbps... Thinness always came with a price.

my mid2014 i7 runs above base frequency during rendering..

(2.5GHz base runs all 4 cores at around 2.9)

for what it's worth

Because we don't hate Apple? Some of us just hate the current leadership team, more specifically Tim Cook and the awful unleashed, post-Jobs Jony Ive.

Fair enough, but bashing them at every corner is not the answer. What are the creative ways that we can all help make Apple a better company? We aren’t going to run off their executive team. I miss SJ just as much as the next person.

Funny..Its a fair criticism of company selling electronics at very high prices. I am happy when they are successful but also point out the misleading practices and mistakes. Some are honest mistakes and some are just calculated strategies. Anyway there is no hate. Just logical thinking

The entire point of my post apparently flew way over your head. There was NO NEED for an i9 in this enclosure. People would have been plenty happy with the latest i7. Apple could have dodged this bullet altogether.
but i7 2.6 also throttles...

Ah, gotcha. Still, it's not as if Apple just had a spec sheet until the day these released. They had every opportunity to test them.

no really, i was literally waiting with my open wallet for a YEAR for a 6-core macbook pro with 32GB RAM.

I so much wanted this laptop to be that, but im completely disillusioned now. and dont know what the hell to even buy. Mac Pro is 2013, and i dont want a 27" screen.
i have no options with apple, and this is not a joke.
