So the best option here is to go with base 2.2ghz model, customised the rest as you like, install Xcode and disable 2 physical cores...?
The 2.2GHz model with 6 cores active should be fine (if I understood the review correctly). The higher base clock speeds don't buy you much.

Man - my i9 machine has just shipped so too late to cancel.
I don't know whether to just keep it or return it!!

Will be used with FCPX mainly - general 1080p editing really so nothing intensive as such. My main concern is the heat build up affecting the lifespan of the notebook over anything else....

May just cancel and re-order the i7......

No its the lowest spec CPU with 32GB Ram, top graphics and whatever storage you want.

All notebookcheck said was is that the 2.2 might be better. I haven’t seen any evidence that it actually is. If it can maintain base speed when pegged I might still consider it. 32Gb, 1Tb, 2.2 was the spec I had my eye on from the start anyway. 2015 is still working well though, so I might just hold off for a potential 2019 redesign.

They really screwed the pooch on this one imo.

I think many would say keep the 2015 for now!

Yeah, I’m almost there in my head I think. I am interested in the tests for the base i7 but I’m not sure even an A+ report card would tip me over the edge at this point.

Will the bad PR ever end? Apple has been facing a lot of issues recently.

Bad PR is good PR that’s the law of advertisement and marketing. You can’t get anywhere without critical thinkers thank you very much.

Love you all !!!

Here's the type of review that Louis Rossman was complain about.

What is the problem with it? It's a pretty high level review and at about 5 minutes in there's a popup link on it that says "Throttling confirmed" which links to AI's video about throttling on the i9 model where they discuss the issue. Seems pretty rational to me.

To all the apple haters here, can you guys recommend a good windows replacement for macbook pro 2018. Need to make a buying decision soon.

First of all, people who point out flaws in a product are not "haters."

Second, you didn't provide enough information to make a recommendation. What are you expecting to use this laptop for? What programs do you expect to run? What do you value more -- battery life, computing power, the ability to play high end games, portability, looks? How much are you willing to spend?

All of this needs to be answered before any recommendation can be made and don't be surprised if one of us "haters" suggests a different model MBP.

Don't get offended when I said 'haters'. Reading this thread and other reddit comments i felt like this macbook pro is the worst thing that apple build. Lots of negative stuff about touch bar, keyboard, processor etc. I currently own a 2015 macbook pro (given to me by the workplace) I have to return it soon and buy a new model. I use it for number crunching, running cpu intensive scripts, occasional graphics rendering, basically for scientific computing. I can't use a desktop right now because i have to travel frequently. What i noticed was current 16 GB ram is sometime not enough for me because I work with large datasets. I looked at other windows 32GB machines, such as dell xps15 and aero 15x, but there seems to be lots of issues with those laptops as well. I personally like the macos, but don't mind windows and especially ubuntu. I am wondering is there a good alternative for a 32GB laptop (not the gaming ones as they are too heavy for travel). The new macbook pro looks promising but the keyboard, processor and the price giving me second thoughts. Anyway, i am fine with an i7 processor as long as it gives me reasonable clock speed for some period of time.

Seems like apple’s fault, not intel’s, if it’s true. Apple designed the thermal solution for the MBP.

Yup, some people are blaming this on Intel's i9, but it's not. The same chipset in a Windows laptop performs way better (see the video). This is Apple's thermal packaging and throttling. Maybe they can tweak this through software, but I fully agree with Dave in the video.... a premium price _needs_ to come with premium performance. Period.

Apple should go back to the original retina form factor. It would allow for superior cooling, battery, ports, etc. It might not be enough to cool the i9 sufficiently, but it would certainly help.

I don't think that is happening ever again, though it would be a nice change. They won't accept their wrongdoings.

My 2017 model doesn’t throttle much, and when running cpu intensive tasks, when the new model throttles the 2017 models run faster.... According to tests people like dave2d have ran... it’s the main reason I’m keeping my 2017 instead of ‘upgrading’

Maybe find a good deal for one on eBay

Beyond that.... Dell xps? Lg gram?

the windows laptop performs better because premiere pro is better optimized for windows. i9 has issues in ALL laptops... windows laptop is i7 sixcore. But the point is that premiere is optimized for windows and runs like **** on macOS.

That said, i9 is obviously cooled unsufficiently and because of the video im holding back with the order.

The issue is the race to the bottom of costs! Apple wants to keep its profits high so they are cutting every corner they can. A lot of this has to do with the management team putting the shareholders interests in front of their customers! It gets back the analogy which comes first? the horse or the cart. Apple as of late seems to be putting the cart in front! If you build for your customers the dollars will come in on their own! Trying to pull the wool over their eyes won't fix things and in the long haul it will sour your relationship. If you want loyal customers you need to treat them with respect and honesty!

While I maybe railing on Apple here, Apple is not the only one thats doing this! The last few years there seems to be a push across all industries to cow-tow to the majority stock holders to create higher stock prices with high profit numbers. There is a limit here on how high you can go and not loose your customer base. While Apple has the cash to weather the storm it still not good for us who depend on their gear.

Does this sound familiar? The Wall Street Crash of 1929 was also riding high in a similar way just before - The signs of Greed!

Apple management needs to shake the fantasies out of their heads and right this ship of theirs. Get back to the basics! Give your customer base what it needs not the fantasies swirling in your heads. Pro's need ports not dongles! Pro's need performance not throttling! Pro's need serviceable systems not throw-a-ways! OR systems that cost 1/3 the cost in a single repair.

And lastly, the customer base does not want band-aid solutions and extended warranties based on the day of first shipment, but the date of when they purchased it! And, when you have a extended warranty issue email and/or text notification to the person and a means to update your notification DB (use a QR code within About This Mac as the means to connect and validate) so they know!

So I need to upgrade my MBP....pretty much can't wait any longer. I use it almost only for music production using Logic Pro and LOTS of plug-ins, soft synths/samplers and audio tracks.

My current Late 2013 15" MBP (4 core i7 2.6Ghz with 16 Gig RAM and I TB SSD) is starting to bog down too much.

I'm trying to figure out if I "play it safe" with the new MBP 15" 2.2Ghz with 32 Gig RAM and 4TB SSD if I will notice a very sizable difference in performance, which would appear to my very basic Apple techy knowledge, to come from the 32 gig of RAM and the two extra cores.

Also, not sure if the extra GHz from the 2.6 6 cores version (....and a bit extra heat on the negative side...) would make that much difference or not for Music/Audio production use.

Thx for the help
Mike

Not only that it actually, if I understand correctly it makes use of the nVidia CUDA while on the macOS it only uses the OpenCL instead of Metal (graphics or compute) - so with Windows I don't think it will push the CPU as hard. It will be interesting if the promised redevelopment of their suite to also run on the iPad will include migrating the macOS one to the native much more efficient library (might have been pushed due to the rumoured depreciation of OpenCL on macOS).

Did you have any trouble with the keyboard? I am enjoying the 2015 keyboard. I tested the new keyboard in an apple store; although i don't like it that much, i can live with it. What I am worried about is the keyboard failure issue. After all, the only reason for me for preferring apple over other windows products is their quality control and macos. Don't want to spend over 2k if i cannot use the product for at least 5 years.

I am seriously considering dell xps 15, but it seems that they have lots of quality control issues with coil whine, screen ghosting, and some throttling as well. It seems like its difficult to get a good laptop without issues. I am doing further research on this. Lg gram does not have 32gigs model as far as I know. With my personal experience macbook pros runs without issues for a long time (lots of my colleagues use pre 2016 models without any issues; of course you can be unlucky and get a faulty model), which tempts me to buy a new macbook pro

You might be interested in checking out the article posted a few minutes ago. iFixit tested the 2018 keyboard by putting particulate into it.

well i personally want a 2,9 i9, 32gb ram, 2tb, r560x mbp that doesnt throttle lol.

If i can pick fictiuous things i want a better GPU, and something thats either a laptop or screenless design. And runs macOS.
