This is the sort of engineering invovation and leap forward that we should be expecting from Apple, not it's competitors.

maybe you’ve heard of scale?

Apple has to manufacture 100 million of these things. This company will have to make 3 million.

Just because it can be done, doesn’t mean Apple can do it to scale. Every component has to be available is massive quantities for Apple.

Anyone remember when Apple used to innovate like this?

Must be nice to innovate when you only have to produce a limited number. Apple likely couldn’t even begin to source the needed components to make 100 million of these.

Looks nice, but I'm wondering if the photo quality of the front-camera will hold up under the test of time. The more the photos are processed by software the less control the photographer will have over them. But we'll see.

If you want to see what the creative minds at Apple are doing, follow the patents.

Your thinking like an Apple senior exacutive or shareholder. If Apple want to win me back as a continued buying customer, they've got to do a hell of a lot more than say to customers 'look at our patents if you want to see innovation'.

When it comes to Apple, many things have made me go WOW, the 1984 ad, the different colours ibooks and imacs, G3 powerbooks powermac g3, the ipod touch and thats when the WOW stopped for me. Designs started being repeated time after time but with different upgrades in them. I look at some laptop and desktop case designs for windows based computers and i go WOW. I look at some of the case designs for android mobile phones and i go WOW. I look at case designs for handleld music players and I go WOW but with Apple it's just 'meh, same thing again'.

A faster processor, bigger memory and larger storage is not going to get me to want to spend upwards of $4000 on a mackbook. Apple needs to bring the WOW factor back before I part with my hard earned money.

Why not place the camera in the centre (diagonally).
That way it would overcome the worst problem of an edge mounted camera. Specifically the lack of eye contact we’ve all discovered during video calls.

The pixels likely need to be turned off around the camera for the image to be usable, unless you want a little black circle in the center of your screen during video calls this won’t work.

Apple has shamelessly never cared about being first.

People don’t remember who did it first. They remember who did it the best.

Apple didn’t make the first MP3 player, Smartphone, tablet, Smartwatch or wireless earphones. Yet we remember the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods because Apple waited to do it right.

That doesn’t take away from ZTE though. This is truely awesome.
Sadly, that‘s not the case anymore with Apple’s new products.

and here is a selfie taken with this new camera! impressive!

It's not. The screen is not symmetrical. The bezel at the bottom is slightly thicker than the top bezel.

You can't unsee that.
That's for the charging port, the digitizer connector and the microphone, I think. They will get to it eventually. If they can fix the top, I believe they can fix the bottom too.

Eventually, I believe they will have a 2.5D glass design for the edges of the display.

I'm wondering the same thing, how far the software will be able to compensate for what amounts to taking a picture through a painted window.

right. sunlight, reflections, all that good stuff. there'll be a lot of painting in to do, i reckon.

We won’t be able to cover our cameras in the future and that’s a bad thing imo.

The hypocrisy of some Apple supporters is disturbing. When Apple releases a new iphone or macbook or ipad, one of the biggest critisms Apple gets from all quarters which you see in this forum, including Apple supporters is that whilst the internal hardware has had upgrades (faster processor, larger memory size, larger storage size), the styling is the same and there being a lack of innovation. Now here is a thread of a competing phone company showing a new innovation which results in people questioning Apples stance on innovation and suddenly out comes all the possible excuses in support of Apple as to why we have not seen any inovation from them.

One of the biggest excuses that gets used is 'Apple does not do first, they do best'. That might be so for many people but for someone such as me who is a Apple customer and long time user of Apple products, I want to see 'first', I want to see what the creative minds at Apple (if they have any) are capable of. I want to see 'creativity' just like it was in the past. Just look at the macbook range, same looking machine year after year but with improved specs year after year. I want different. Apple was always about 'Think different' but I am not seeing that and by the looks of the many posts on the subject in numerous sections of the forum, there is a huge majority who think the same way, we want different, not the same.

Exactly! Bravo!

If you want to do anything else during the call, your fingers would show up all the time on video. Same issue with tapping to autofocus in the camera.

Many of the “innovations” that seem to wow people are the same ones Apple has looked into and decided to hold off on producing for a variety of legitimate reasons. Some here have mentioned a very good problem, and that is of scale. What I suggest by looking at patents is that one can see what Apple has been working on and experimenting with to garner a bit of insight of what could come down the pipeline. I’m not saying patents should satisfy the need to put out a new and exciting product, but merely shows that Apple is not sitting idle.

The bottom is thicker because the controller of the display is there. Apple fixed this issue on the iPhone X by folding the screen underneath, but Android OEMs don’t do this.

Putting a camera under the screen makes it harder to match the quality of an unobstructed smartphone camera, so to compensate ZTE has developed software algorithms that address haze, glare, and color cast issues in photos.
So we're just introducing a new problem that needs to be counteracted by heavy image processing. All that to avoid a slightly larger bezel or notch. No thanks.
