You're wrong. Apple does not show prototypes, does not sell a series of several hundred pieces. Apple must have technology ready for production in hundreds of millions of units. This cannot be done in the style of Chinese manufacturers.

oh...I never ever saw anything called AirPower?

You know thats a marketing picture right?

It just a bit of substrate that is bent over.

Huh. That rendering is a bit misleading then. Bending the controller connector shouldn’t be very hard or expensive though. I don’t know why more companies don’t do it when bezelless displays have been around for years at this point.

What a nice looking phone (that purple!!!) Should be interesting to see how this works. Hopefully ZTE or a competitor can avoid working around PWM in the future.

May Apple be toiling away to release something similar sooner rather than later. It will be great when they ditch the notch. That said, I am happy with my 2020 SE.

oh...I never ever saw anything called AirPower?

Airpower was never intended to be a prototype for a limited series though. Yes development and production didn’t pan out but it wasn’t as if that was Apple’s intention in the first place. Many other OEMs like to make phones that are intended to be an expensive and limited run to show off their R&D like the Mi Mix Alpha or Galaxy Fold.

I'm sure Apple has equivalent tech labbed-up but is not releasing it because it's not mature. Remember folding screens?

This stuff in nothing new. Apple had a patent on it more than 10 years ago. If the technology was mature enough to be produced in the millions without compromising the camera quality Apple would have done it already.

Totally rubbish defense of Apple. When the iphone with the notch came out the consensus within this forum was that the members did not like it, they hated it, they would not buy the phone.
There were a vocal minority that had that attitude towards the notch. I don't remember going back 3 years if that was the entirety of the sentiment.
Now a competitor comes out with something that is very innovative with a majority in support of that initiative, someone now comes out and defends Apples innovative notch idea that when it first came out it was hated!!! and worse still some people like that post.
It's innovative if it works as claimed. If it doesn't work as claimed, then it's as innovative as airpower was.
Even when Apple doesn't do something right, people still find ways to make sure Apple comes out on top. No wonder Apple is able to charge what they for their products when they know they have supporters who will go to such levels to protect the brand.
This is a forum of opinions. And yep the old "isheep" argument is the rational behind Apples high prices and low level of innovation. /s

I never understood the reasoning for why so many people are against having a notch on the phone.
So with these notchless phones, when you pick it up - how do you know which orientation is the phone? It's important as which side are you supposed to answer the call? Which side are you supposed to hold it when taking a photo (either with front or rear facing?). The more the manufacturers make phones without bezels or indicators where the top is - the more the user has to fumble to see which side is up (and the greater chance of dropping the phone).

I love having the notch (and the ear speaker notch) so I know quickly how to hold the phone.

Apple has shamelessly never cared about being first.

People don’t remember who did it first. They remember who did it the best.

That makes sense and I don't disagree with that strategy overall, but when Apple has been both first with an innovation and the best, first multi-touch display smartphone, first high res retina display, they absolutely dominate their competition. Not pre-ordering an iphone 4 back in the day I had to wait I think almost a year for availability. Sold out everywhere and everyone wanted one. OK maybe not everyone but you get what I'm putting down.

Last big smartphone innovation Apple has had is face ID on a phone with a big notch which had the best security but not the best look. Before that? Mmmm retina displays? before that the original multi touch iphone?

Yes the processor improvements are amazing and dominate Android, but that's not what non tech buyers buy a new smartphone for and there are a lot more of them then there is of us. Even as a tech enthusiast, I don't buy a new iphone for processor improvements for at least 3 years.

There are indeed lots of them and they made the iPhone 11 the top selling smartphone in the world in the past six months. So while Apple might lose some customers because the phone isn't the latest and greatest in terms of looks and perceived innovation, they are able to hold on to and increase sales as a result of what they do release.

We don't know the nature of innovation that occurs behind close doors. Because of Apple's secrecy they could have already had what ZTE is marketing but of course we'll not know unless Apple tells us. In the meantime, the grass is always greener, you know?

it’s the same with all phones though. Smartphones have stagnated a bit due to saturation.

This article is based on a phone having a super innovative feature. You think if Apple released this under screen camera while, still keeping the level of security that Apples face ID has, the same or better front facing camera and had a full screen with no notch that wouldn't increase the amount of demand of this years iPhone lineup?

If so I have to strongly disagree. I'd be ordering one without a second thought. At this time other than a new smaller sized and a slight change to the form factor if I don't feel my iphone X is sluggish enough I may hold off upgrading this year. Non tech people would be flipping out over this feature even more so as it's improvement they can physically see and just looks so much better than having a notch.

I think you're misunderstanding what I originally wrote. I did say their wait till something is perfected approach is obviously working as you said iphone 11 sells very well. They are also Apple and anyone who doesn't think there are many people who just keep buying an iPhone because its Apple are out of touch with how much brand loyalty there is to Apple, people locked into the ecosystem or simply don't want to learn a new phone OS. But with some real innovation they would be clobbering competing brands and putting a nice sized dent into android market share. You're not going to get them all but anyone thinking of switching a feature like this would sell many on switching or coming back to the iphone if they previously owned one. Kinda like when people left because they wanted a bigger phone likely came back when Apple increased the size.

I'm only talking about increasing demand and this would definitely do that but maybe Apple, especially this year, couldn't handle the demand anyway.

Also stating they might lose some customers. No company EVER wants to lose customers. That's repeat business you lose. Especially if they never come back.

If this works well can apple and Samsung copy this so they can stop putting holes and notches in the screens so I can buy a modern phone again. I will NOT buy a phone with a notch or hole in the screen.

Lol lies. Samsung had an extremely insecure face recognition, as did Nexus devices. They could be unlocked with pictures.

ok give it a rest. Manufacturers were using 2D face and retina scanning long before Apple came up with FaceID. No manufacture, other than Apple, has gone to the trouble (and complication) of using dot projection and the like before or since.

in my case, the technique I tend to use, is to have my eyes open when using my phone. It’s the same method I use when taking a bath, you know, to establish which end has the taps.

I must admit, the notch making it less likely to drop a phone is a first.

Just go ahead and admit no other company has been able to innovate like Apple did with Face ID and move on with your life instead of constantly moving the goal posts. It is cute how you complain about Apple not innovating while in the same breath call Face ID too complicated for other manufacturers though.

But seriously, why does Apple NEED to be first with technology like this?

They don't, and it would be odd if they were. Apple has rarely been the first to market with any technologies, they're usually the first ones to market with a version that "just works". They generally let the other players in the game work out all the bugs and then take what they learned from their mistakes and release something that blows the rest out of the water.

It´s no longer like 2007 when Apple saw the possibilities of then new technologies first. These days no one buys Apple products because of this or that innovation (the under screen camera isnt even something game changing rather than a nice design option) but because of their excellent eco system and reliability.

And now the ecosystem Apple is so proud of is falling apart too following so many investigations and lawsuits.

I can't understand whats the obsession with an all screen phone. Whats wrong with a little bezel on top to carry camera? Sure looks better than a notch eating screen or a punch holed one.
