No notch, no buy. Used to the ugly notch by now plus it helps to stand out from the crowd.

Totally rubbish defense of Apple. When the iphone with the notch came out the consensus within this forum was that the members did not like it, they hated it, they would not buy the phone. Now a competitor comes out with something that is very innovative with a majority in support of that initiative, someone now comes out and defends Apples innovative notch idea that when it first came out it was hated!!! and worse still some people like that post.

Even when Apple doesn't do something right, people still find ways to make sure Apple comes out on top. No wonder Apple is able to charge what they for their products when they know they have supporters who will go to such levels to protect the brand.

This is just a camera right?

TrueDepth with laser dot projector, IR and stuff ain’t happening under the display soon imho..

So don’t be quick to assume Apple would go this route or had reason to even explore it...for all we know ZTE won a race Apple isn’t even in...

I am 100% sure Apple will go this route. It is too big to ignore and no work around.

Man, you are too serious.

Apple should be ashamed of themselves, largest company in the world and they got beat by some small Chinese company...

I suspect Apple is waiting for more mature technology. Removing all the effects of the display is quite a difficult problem to solve. I suspect glare in particular is really hard to compensate out in software as it's rather unpredictable with the data the camera sensor would have. Additionally, I'm sure the FaceID system complicates the incorporation of all those systems under the display. I'll be interested to see performance of the ZTE front-facing camera against cameras with similar specs (but not under a display).

The idea of a camera, fingerprint sensor, and other items is not unknown to Apple. They have a patent on display technology dating to 2013 that relates to such technology. (I believe others as well.). See Apple Invents a Wild New Display that could conceal a Camera, Strobe Flash and/or Fingerprint Scanner until Needed (Patently Apple) for more details.

I am happy to see ZTE (and others) continue to push new technologies as it benefits consumers across the many different vendors in time.

Man, you are too serious.

What is wrong with being serious?. A competitor has the audacity to show some innotive design in it's phone, this design gets some plaudits from members in here and suddenly we get Apple supporters going on the defence to try and discredit the company whilst pushing their agenda at how good Apple are. So far we've had one to say Apple does have creative people but you have to go look in patents to find it, you then have someone post a fake selfie image to try and discredit the performance of the camera and then you have someone defend a much hated design addition to an iphone which is the 'notch'.

When people are prepared to go to such lengths to try and show Apple is good and the other company as being no good, then yes one has to be 'serious'.

Again, this is why Tim Cook should go. Thanks to cowardice and safety in familiar revenue, Cook continues to spin his sales & marketing hamster wheel while the Steve Jobs' protégés of the world slide into what was once Apple's risk/reward space. iPhone 8, imo, was the last concept of beautiful hardware and differential software. The bumps and notches of today's Apple products are sloppy.

Honestly, seeing such a beautiful device disgusts me with the iPhone notch and bumps.
But I’m stuck with Apples inferior designs due to it having the only OS I trust.

This is the sort of engineering invovation and leap forward that we should be expecting from Apple, not it's competitors.

A number of people have been commenting that apple is behind the innovation curve. Although I would like apple to innovate quickly, the fact of the matter is that Apple devices have very rarely if ever been the first to market for any new technology. Apple’s brand of innovation is to simplify and perfect, which means that any defining apple feature you can think of was probably available in some competitor’s product for years before apple released its version. Take finger print authentication: that was available on PC laptops more than a decade before apple finally added the feature to the MacBook Pro. BUT Touch ID on Mac is more secure and reliable than what competitors had been offering. The same applies to face authentication on mobile phones, and shall, no doubt, to a completely notches design.

The problem with Apple is that there are a lot of innovations or features which simply aren’t introduced on the software side, not because they can’t be done well or are too hard, but because the focus simply ins’t there.

People are seriously more impressed by a semi-transparent round window in a display than
- in-house crazy fast silicon
- faceID shooting IR lasers at your face
- LIDAR shooting IR lasers at the room
- actual tablets (no real competition for ipads, just hobbies)
- actual smartwatch (no real competition for apple watch, just hobbies or less for less)
- the eventual actual visor in the making
- the upcoming out of anybody’s league apple silicon laptops and desktops

?

Apple is at the spearhead of innovation if you ask me

Smartphones and full tower desktops are the only hw where anybody can even touch Apple.
Everything else, they’re on another planet.
It’s not like the occasional thing somebody else gets right before apple (or before apple cares) negates that.

That’s bold.
I could, on the other hand, bet that FaceID biometrics will define Macs, iPads and iPhones for the better part of this new decade.

Even failed 3D touch had a 4 years run.
Double that for FaceID at least.

FaceID under the screen doesn’t sound feasible at the moment. (If anything, as users we need an even better faceID that works at any angle, faster, better, not a crappier one below a screen.)

Some podcasters talk like Apple would drop FaceID any day like it’s nothing, when in reality we may be seeing them doubling down on it soon (on Macs)..

Then again, if you mean “100%“ given infinite time, like in 10 years..then yes probably...doesn’t mean Apple was racing ZTE today...

You know that Apple will eventually "have" this or better technology, and you know they are working on it, probably in partnership with a display manufacturer as Apple doesn't build mobile displays for production products (yet).

But seriously, why does Apple NEED to be first with technology like this? As you can read from another article posted today, Apple's iPhone 11 is the world's highest selling smart phone. It has a notch. What incentive is there for Apple to rush something like this to market?

There are compromises with this technology in front of the lens that requires software to fix. That's never going to be as good as no layer in front or an integrated layer in front. I would think Apple would not ever desire to release a compromised solution, and they don't have to! I do look forward to the day when my iPhone is all screen, but it will happen when it happens.

You're wrong. Apple does not show prototypes, does not sell a series of several hundred pieces. Apple must have technology ready for production in hundreds of millions of units. This cannot be done in the style of Chinese manufacturers.

Agree. But they are the dearth of design.

I do love the breakthrough technology in this, but I can’t help but think of how bad that camera quality will be. Imagine some fingerprints or smudges from pulling down to get the Notification Center.

The other problem I don’t see many of you supporters addressing is the security. Unlocking the phone with Face ID has become so effortless, but for me the selling point is security. That it can’t be fooled with a photograph being held up to it.

That being said, I welcome competition. It can only make Apple’s tech better. Interested to see the next 5 years of iPhones.

Any non-rendered images? I don’t really trust ZTE renders because they’re known to decrease bezel size on their renders.
Wonder if it’s visible at all like on previous concept phones.

It will soon enough tell when Youtubers gets their hands on them

Apple has shamelessly never cared about being first.

People don’t remember who did it first. They remember who did it the best.

Neil Amstrong was the 1st to step foot on the moon.
Do you remember all the others that did the same perhaps in better craft/hardware later?
