Mark is 100% accurate:

Meta sells hardware at a loss because the user and their privacy is just a commodity to them.

Apple makes money on what they build; not whom they exploit.
For Facebook (Meta or whatever they want to be called) the user and its personal information is the product they sell to advertisers. That's why they have billion-users social network that is free to use and yet, make billions of profit per year. Privacy is just a regulatory inconvenience that they try to overcome to continue exploiting their business model.

This looser gambled investor's money for a project that was dead from infancy. Zucc, just admit the Metaverse is a failed project ffs.

It's true. It's why Apple lost in the TV streaming stick market and in the smart speakers market. Other companies were willing to sell at break even or low margins or even at a loss in order to make money through other ways.

It'll be tough for Apple to win in the VR market unless its devices are significantly superior.
I didn’t even know Apple was even in the TV stream stick market. No wonder they lost; they never competed in it!

Zuckerberg claiming he stands up against 'the man' doesn't sound sincere. You need to have compelling hardware AND software. And what Apple has that Facebook doesn't is brand loyalty.

basically… Said several times in that quote. Apple does what it does very well. People are done with Facebook. I will NOT buy anything from Facebook just to get into the metaverse. Once Apple creates a wearable which accesses the metaverse, then it will become a big thing. Until then… it's just Facebook games in 3D

If you have been using Apple products long enough, you would have remembered a time when Apple would highlight products that were not new, such as iPhone 4S. Those days are gone and they just up the number to sell people the same product because the battery is impossible to change. I don't know why you are protecting capitalism this aggressively.
It’s just a number. Changing to single years instead of 's' variants makes more sense. Most of the upgrades are just speed bumps with minor hardware changes, just like the 's' upgrades. Also, their latest phone are the easiest to fix for years.

Your reason they changed the number is based on what? Unsubstantiated perceptions of Apple or facts? I don’t know why you are against Apples phone numbering system so aggressively.

I have no issues with apple. I know what I am buying and they provide a quality of product and environment.

I have issues with zuck zuck. he takes my personal info and likes and spies on what I do to sell that info for huge $$$ while he tells me he is doing it for the love of meta for no profit. if that was true he would be purged from meta really fast so that the stockholders would not lose any money and get more profit. if you believe him you will be the sheep led into the slaughter house. he has that evil look in his blank eyes.

It's about demand. People will pay for Apple products, no one wants the Meta VR crap.

Though VR will come along for the ride, Apple's thrust in the market will be AR (augmented reality). That's the market Apple is addressing, with a far wider audience in both commercial/business and consumer spaces.

Even if it were free I wouldn't want it. Even if I am paid to take it, I wouldn't use it. VR already makes me dizzy so I really don't give a rats donkey about it. AR I really don't see the point. I don't see the point in wearable technology that just becomes obsolete before it comes out. You better believe companies like Apple works on the next two revisions of anything.

I don't need a HUD when going places. I don't need walking instructions, or advertisements to show me which store as X in stock because they know I am running low. Technology is great. I wish in some ways I can become immortal so I can be there to see all the great new things come out. I want to see if Star Trek comes true. I want to be there for first contact.

But it seems we are definitely going in the wrong direction. Maybe that Grandpa Simpson quote to Homer is hitting true with me now that I am middle aged. But I really can't find any real valid reason why VR/AR is the next big quantum leap in technology.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has criticized Apple's pricing strategy by claiming that the tech giant typically "charges as much as it can" for hardware, whereas Meta will take a different approach by selling products like its new $1500 AR/VR headset at a "break even" price point, or in some cases even a loss (via Business Insider).

In a podcast interview following the launch of Meta's new "Quest Pro" headset, Zuckerberg said it's natural for hardware companies to want to make a profit on product sales, but that Apple seeks to charge customers as much as possible. In contrast, Zuckerberg said Meta will take a different route with its portfolio of hardware products, and claimed his company may make no profit from some of its sales and will instead rely on revenue generated by software and services offered in the metaverse.
This week, Meta announced the Quest Pro, its latest AR/VR headset for the so-called "metaverse." At $1500, the Quest Pro is the high-end successor model to the Meta Quest and boasts a more comfortable design, more advanced display technology, and sensors that can read a user's emotions and facial movements, according to Meta. Apple's AR/VR headset is rumored to be announced in January, and you can learn more about it by checking out our AR/VR roundup.

I think the Metaverse is one of the stupidest ideas ever. Why do we keep using technology to move away from meaningful relationships and interactions in the real world? It is not a new idea, of course—Second Life was touted 19 years ago as revolutionary. It has never taken off into general use. People lost interest. Reportedly, even within Meta many are scratching their heads about Zuckerberg's obsession and direction for the company.

The issue Zuck has is that Facebook is yet to actually build a good product itself. The original Facebook has become a mess. They bought Instagram, Oculus and WhatsApp. Everything they launch that is a proper in-house Facebook developed original fails. People won't pay high prices for bad products.

Also, this is not a new business model - it's the Amazon business model. Kindles and Echos are sold at cost and sometimes a loss in order to become the dominant players in that market. It pushes people to use Amazon more.

Older than that even. I’d argue I t’s the Gillette business model. Cheap razor and then more than paid for by their cartridges.

Even in technology it's the console market business model and even those after a few years start to turn a profit (the hardware).

In the end it's really a subscription.
