Zune HD Hands on Demo and Impressions

IMO, the Zune's UI is a complete mess, like any other software M$ makes. Not to mention, a low resolution OLED screen is not as "beautiful" as the person describes. The name itself is misleading because it does not support full HD.

While the interface is just "blah" to me, how can you say it's not as beautiful as the person says it is? Have *you* held one in your hands? It's like watching QVC and a HDTV being sold on your SD set going: "The picture doesn't look THAT good!"

As for not full HD... what's Apple done for HD lately? "iPod Touch HD"? Nope. This thing has an output to get 720. Again-- what's Apple done for HD lately?

wow it looks great, the ui needs work and i would like a bigger width but all in all it looks like a great competitor. although the only way it'll stay competitive is if they develop a app store of some sort

Its integrating with Xbox Live...which has a Marketplace....and XNA is currently the SDK for Zune/XBox Live.

Its in the works.

The UI is MILES ahead of the iPod touch, although the Zune is still behind in terms of features.

Seriously though, good job Microsoft on a great UI.

You must have seen something other than this video. because it doesn't look any better than an ipod. Just different. What's better?

I'm not gonna lie. I'm pretty impressed with the Zune HD. If it was Mac compatible, I'd seriously consider getting one just to test it out and have a hands-on comparison between both the iPod touch and Zune HD. And If I didn't like it, I'd give it to my lil bro. :D

I wonder how much it will cost and for how many GBs

It looks Ok, but i don't think the UI is going to be better than the Ipod touch OS.
But i gotta give it to MS, Zune's make an awesome door stop :p.

Leave it to Microsoft to simply expand on something Apple has already been producing for a year. If they were actually innovating, it would be impressive.

Yeah, because there were no MP3 players, laptops, smartphones, desktops before Apple started producing them.

Apple is doing exactly the same. They take a concept and (try to) improve on it. In our eyes MS is just less successful at it.

What was new in the iPod Touch for example that had never been seen in any other MP3 player of the touchscreen type, other than great design and a good UI?

But the visible screws on the back? Really, Bill Gates, really?

Maybe I'm conditioned to find the iPhone/iPod more slick. I sure like it over what I saw in the video.

I wonder how much lag this device is going to have, if any. Does anyone know if there are any plans from microsoft to develop apps for this device?

For the record I've messed with a Zune in a Best Buy one time... the controls and everything were so crappy compared to the iPod Video I planned on upgrading from. Ever since then and actually experiencing their "Zune Marketplace" or whatever it's called, just an overall bad experience. I would never transition from iPod and iTunes to that.

This thing sucks.

Such a compelling argument.

Was this one time 4 years ago?

Seriously, i don't know how you can say the controls are crappy on the current Zune......it has a 4-way pad....or touch control.

I think that Microsoft might have a success on their hands. Though public opinion has recently given the iPod a huge thumbs up in terms of software (largely due to the app store), we shouldn't forget that the competition is slowly but surely catching up. I see it as healthy competition, which will most likely end up giving the consumer a more balanced product as Apple compensates for the increasing challenges such as this.

Well, from this video I think the interface is OK (functional) but not as good as the Touch. There are no apps for this.

The OLED screen is neat, and probably uses a lot less power, but we'll have to see if Apple actually beats them to the punch, as the Zune isn't out yet.

They're definitely getting better, but I don't believe they are nearly as good as Apple.

Ha ha, one poster said the one thing the Zune has going for it is CHOICE???? Yeah, Microsoft gives you 2 choices, use it with Windows or don't use it at all. :p

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A312g Safari/528.16)

How is a text based interface better than an Iconic interface?? And as far as asthetics goes, that's pretty much up to each individuals opinion. It's funny how the guy states his opinion of how It looks as fact. Also, OLED's are great, and I would love to see an iPhone with them, but If the resolution isn't even going to match that of the iPhone, how is it going to match it in terms of screen quality?

That's because you can remove the battery and do your own replacements.

Steve will charge you $99 for the less Genius Bar and $200 for the battery for your $249 Touch.

Bargains galore at Apple, get em while their hot.

Um... it's $79 to replace an iTouch battery. Where the heck do you get your figures from, from the Zune support page?

PeeCee folks, ya gotta love 'em, for what they are.

I would have gladly paid $1,000 for the original iPhone. I felt it was that good compared to everything else available. It didn't have some features that others had (video, flash, MMS) but the things it did have that others did not more than made up for that - for me.

It's the only phone I've ever used where when I get a second call coming in I get three very clear options on what to do. In my prior phones, it was always a mess trying to figure out what puts the call on hold and answers the second one, which ignores the second one, and which hangs up the first and answers the second. What a nightmare.
