The ZuneHD is a sharp looking product. OLED screens are amazing, so video should be incredible. The Tegra chip inside allows smooth flowing UI response, something no other touchscreen maker (aside from Apple) has been able to get right so far. Even the existing Zunes are better sounding than my Touch, so I expect amazing audio from the ZuneHD.

If they try and sell it for the same price as a Touch I doubt they'll sell any. I'll buy one if it's 10 to 15% less than a Touch with the same memory.

The browser will be multitouch, with pinch and tap enabled. It won't look anything like any previous browser from MS, and is optimized for the ZuneHD from the ground up.

Time will tell if it makes a dent in Touch sales. They may not be targeting that market though. From what I've seen it could kick every Korean pretender off the continent. It looks like it will put the Samsung P3, Cowon S9, iriver SPINN to shame, and send Japan's Sony back to the drawing board for it's X1000 series.

I think the Zune HD would skyrocket in saes if the made a 16gb one for $199 and they marketed the product as full integration into the xbox 360.

Isn't the "HD" stand for the HD radio tuner? Frankly, listening to digital radio isn't a "killer app."
Yes, that's what it mainly stands for. There is also some emphasis on video and with it's new dock it can output any 720p video via HDMI that it might have onboard. As with current Zunes they let you tag songs you hear on the radio for purchase from the Zune Marketplace. HD Radio comes with better song info than standard FM, so it should be a more reliable feature if you are still collecting music.

Best of luck to Zune HD and Microsoft!

That will ultimately yield more power to Apple users.

iPod/iPhone needs a fierce competition. I believe Apple can be better.

...the Zune HD looking to be a 'smartphone'?

I have a question that some may think is oblivious, but I would like some help.... I know this is all hypothetical, but if the Zune HD became a smartphone - do you think it would cause a political uproar with the Microsoft developers because they are already working on other platforms for smartphones, instead of just one (for a Zune HD smartphone)?

I mean, why haven't they thought about creating an innovative smartphone? I know hardware was never their highest priority, but gees... check out the new Zune HD - that is one nice piece of hardware!

There is a "wow factor" here, nothing to swindle me away from Apple, but this Tegra processor is absolutely amazing in speed, and best yet, the little amount of battery this thing needs is very very impressive.

I say all this, because I believe for the Zune HD to become popular & be a true success, you need more applications from developers -And making a smartphone will help this cause...Applications, inevitably may be the sole reason while Apple will always win this war.

I swear more and more trolls come to the boards each day oogling over windows and zune. Guess noone realizes this is MAC rumors.

Yeah, the way they talk about it, you'd think we even have a forum dedicated to windows on here. Oh wait...

Competition = good. Hope this Zune HD turns out amazing.

being a mac user and being completely blind to everything going on outside of the mac community are two different things. Nobody is "trolling" here. Anything that relates to Apple is relevant here in my opinion, including competing products and services. Are there other forums on Mac Rumors that may have been a better location for this topic? Perhaps, but that's a different argument.

I'd consider one if they made software for Mac OS X. Without that it is a non-stater for me. And it is a shame because I like the feature of being able to hook it to a TV and display 720p. I do this with my iPod and iPhone now. 720p would be just amazing.

And to those who say the screen on the device is not real HD, it would be useless on a device that small.

I own everything Apple. I think the Itunes and the app store are second to none. The thing I want with the new ZUNEHD is the pass function. Download all the music you want and get 10 music credits a month for only 15 bucks.
They have multiple channels like Top 100 (country etc) and music channels. They get updated everytime you are in a WIFI area. This to me coupled with the new software makes it a force to be acknowlegded.
At the moment I am playing around with a friends Zune 120 with the lastest software. It does some amazing things. IF the ZuneHD is as good as promised I will be buying one.
I love to find new music and I think the Music Pass function will be a greater feature than all the apps I have downloaded.

All of this is moot as far as I and other Europeans are concerned, since the Zune does not even exist outside of North America and it appears Microsoft is in no hurry to change this anytime soon. Vote of confidence in its own products? I think not.

i agree, i havent seen one here in aus.

Lots of M$ cheerleading for a product that has yet the hit the shelves. The reviews I have seen to date were all prototypes. While competition is good, why don't we wait and see what our friends in Redmond actually put on the shelves, eh?

The tegra chip doesn't make much of a difference IMO unless MS does something that actually uses it to its potential (video out doesn't do it for me, I buy my PMP's to be portable.) Otherwise its just a spec on a sheet.

I like the 16gb version better. The all black looks alot better than the gold looking one.

Ya the black used in the demo was pretty awesome looking. As far as software, cant i just install windows using boot camp and no longer have an issue in regards to software with the zune?

There is one thing I'll never understand about Microsoft. Why won't the Zune and Xbox talk to each other? Here are two products made by the same company, going after basically the same audience, and yet they are not working together at all. Heck, the iPod has as much functionality with the Xbox 360 as a Zune does! That's saying something!

As for the Zune HD, I have a bad feeling about the price on the thing. I did a check and they haven't announced it yet, despite the Zune HD releasing in less than two months. That is a damn good screen, and it should match or do better than the iPod touch in almost every technical chart. That is not going to be cheap at all.

I don't think it will be much of a competitor. Does it even have an app store? I don't think it does from what I checked out at Wikipedia. The app store is kind of the main selling point of the iPod touch and iPhone right now...

Anonymous sources (i really want to stress that) have said that the 16GB will cost between $250-280. I think at the most it will be slightly more than the Touch because MS wants to compete with the Touch, they cant put something that costs much more than their competition when the competition has such a lead. To put things into perspective the new Sony Walkmen has a 3.3 inch OLED screen like the HD and the 16GB of that is $300.

Microsoft should sell it at $199 and then people will really look at buying it. I mean a full $100 less than the ipod touch.

I've been looking at this as well. Just got rid of my Archos 5 after having a pretty much horrible experience with both the device and the company.

I've narrowed down the replacement I'm going to get in September to either and iTouch or a Zune HD.

Technically speaking specification wise the Zune HD is superier, its got OLED and Tegra which is apparently in the Geforce 2-3 class for 3D acceleration which would be great for gaming. Combine that with the fact its apparently possible to game on Xbox live with it and its pretty appealing given I already own a 360. The Zune pass thing is some what cool as well.

The iTouch obviously has the Apple apps store going for it as well as the built in speaker and possibily a camera (camera isen't a huge deal for me) if the rumors about the new version coming in September are true.

Will be a tough call this September for sure.
