I wouldn't say I am excited about the ZuneHd but I am intrigued and would take a serious look at it when it is finally time to replace my 1st gen touch ( I don't want to give it up). Although if my Ipod Touch played nice with my 360 a little more then I would probably not care :)

I'm excited for the ZuneHD, mainly because it'll give the Touch a reason to get better. I was impressed with the new iPhone, and am sure it wouldn't have been quite so good if Palm hadn't been working on the Pre.

Game ON!

Actually if MS wanted a 100% for certain sale from me all they'd need to add would be wide open codec support, including divx.

That alone would be enough to completely sell me even if the iTouch was superier hardware wise.

divx?? hmmm ok if your sure.

i thought the Zune HD was better hardware wise?? it can afterall-play HD movies in HD-def on the TV!

Yup, and the HD looks quick, when he went to landscape in the demo it was instantaneous. I remember my iPhone 3g wasn't that fast.

Hm.. Not sure if this is in the right section.. But oh well!

The Zune HD is the only one I will highly consider getting. At the same time, I am doing completely fine with my 160gb iPod Classic, and would not buy a Zune HD just for the HD.. I'll just stick w/ my iPod :).

as in the user interface side of things?? what about playing actual HD  im thinking it will need some pretty compressed bitrates to play it back.

im doing fine with my 60gb 5G iPod Video, i dont use it for video's that much (might watch the occasional TV show/movie what im at a hotel on the TV they provide) but other then that its just for my music collection. i am thinking of upgrading the HD inside it to 160GB, its not really worth the price though at the moment..

Thats why I said 'even if'. Technically speaking the Zune HD is better hardwise yes. The info released about the technical specifications so far has confirmed it. OLED and Tegra for video(most likely 600 series, although 650 is possible) is confirmed.

Tegra 600 series specs:
Processor and Memory Subsystem
ARM11 MPCore @ 650 MHz
32-bit LP-DDR
NAND Flash support

HD AVP (High Definition Audio Video Processor)
720p H.264 and VC-1 AP decode
720p H.264 encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
JPEG encode and decode acceleration

ULP NVIDIA GPU
OpenGL ES 2.0
Programmable pixel shader
Programmable vertex and lighting
Advanced 3D/2D graphics

Imaging
Up to 12 megapixel camera sensor support
Integrated ISP
Advanced imaging features

Display Subsystem
True dual-display support
Maximum display resolutions supported:
720p (1280x720) HDMI 1.3
WXGA (1280x800) LCD
SXGA (1280x1024) CRT
NTSC/PAL TV output

Just a followup the reason Tegra is able to pump out the HD is because its not a single processor, its actually 8 integrated processors. Its becoming popular with mobile devices because it can supposidly 'switch off' whatever parts of the processor its not using in order to save power.

- ARM11
- ARM7
- GPU (Geforce 2-3 class)
- 2D engine processor
- HD video encoder
- HD video decoder
- Audio processor
- Image processor

great thanks for the info!! its looking quite nice now (on the inside that is - dont get me started on the outside haha).

do you have any specs for the max bitrate it can play in 720p??

Best answer I can find. Lots of info on Tegra online though nvidia is pretty open about it.

"The Tegra platform can decode the MPEG-4, H.264, and VC1 formats. With a peak bit rate as high as 20Mbps, the quality approaches that of Blu-ray DVD, he said. "

"The Tegra 600 can play 720p video at 30 frames per second and 1,280-by-1,024 resolution. The APX 2500 cell phone chip can handle the same quality with a lower resolution of 854 by 480. In addition, it can play nine hours of continuous TV broadcast over mobile systems such as DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld), according to Nvidia."

"Blu-Ray DVD", haha... how funny!! i didnt know Blu-Ray discs were DVDs awell!!! i presume he means 720p bitrates by that aswell...

thats pretty good for a hand held device! 9 hours? does that mean battery life? or before it overheats

Dude what is wrong with you? Why all the hate?

The guy I'm quoting is an Nvidia engineer who did a news interview. So he made a snafu with the 'Blu-ray dvd' or the journalist did when quoting him. Regardless Tegra is rock solid and is already being put into over 34 different portable media devices including PMP's and smartphones.

First off I came here because I'm planning to purchase either an iTouch or Zune HD this September so I figured I'd check out the iTouch crowd and see how happy everyone has been with their device and if theres any issues I should know about before I consider purchasing.

I've never seen so much random hostility towards a well known company (nvidia) just because they offer something that might be good to the PMP world. There is no reported issues of overheating of ANY kind with Tegra.

So what if the hardware ends up better then the iTouch? Its not the end of the world, this is called competition and its normal. This is a good thing. Just because someone designs better hardware you don't need to go all crazy defensive on me.

speculation?? :p

yea your probably right, mistakes do happen. i shouldnt jump to conclusions.

well welcome, first off.. i dont own an iPodTouch, so i cant comment on this :)

the main brute of the hostility would be coming from the ones that owned the 8600GT and had problems, even I wasnt happy about that and i never owned one. how could a well known company (like you said) make such a big mistake?? anyway, i think its still in the back of peoples minds and they will fear the worst for a short time to come.

yes i agree, i dont care if this Zune thing is better, i dont want to watch my hi-def movies on that tiny screen (or the iPod Touch's either). most of my "hate" (as you call it) is merely coming from the previous Zune versions, which were... uhh... flops.

Main selling point of the iPod touch: An unrivalled App Store containing over 50 000 applications.

Main selling point of the Zune: HD. Oh wait. It doesn't play videos in HD quality. It plays HD video downscaled to the max resolution its screen can support, which isn't HD.

Kinda sounds like AppleTV

What? The movies on AppleTV are incredibly high-definition!

Why are you planning on buying a Logitech "End of Life" product?

Me? I'd rather get an iPod Touch than an iTouch, but each unto their own I guess...

Why can't the iPod Touch do that then? I hate having to create a special version of my DVD quality videos to play on the iPod Touch because the resolution is slightly less. It should downscale automatically. i have to encode a separate version that takes up additional disk space and use CPU time.

I'm going to go out to the shops and buy a Zune HD.
Oh wait I live in Europe.

But seriously whats up with that? Why can't they release this outside of the US?

There been some question if it will be released in Canada at launch as well. I know the HD Radio probably won't work in Canada as I don't think our radio stations support that yet.

The other issue for us is the CRTC which creates grief if you want to watch or buy TV shows and movies and stream/download them. Same reason we can't get Netflix or Hulu.

That being said that hardware may still end up getting sold here, we just don't know yet.
