boring!

this was the most boring apple show ever! NOTHING new at all! always the same boring formular...it worked 4 years ago...but not any longer!

the new iphone with a finger print scanner for the NSA. wow! That is why I should spend 700-900 euros? For USSR-style spying on me tech?

ARE YOU ****ING NUTS???

Besides: Americans might be used to be spied upon. Germans are no better! However I refuse to pay any money on something that has only disadvantages for me - and no real benefits.Whats new iphone-wise Apple? Except of course that by using my finger prints I am loosing any chance to say "it was not me" who went for this or that porn site. Besides an A7, A8, or A9 with 2000 GHZ does NOT make me stiff.

Same time: LGs new phone offers a lot more ... and Apple does not innovate anymore. As a matter of fact Apple just repackages his old **** and gives it a higher number. Method: lets do something new: phones with color cases and - wow - one in gold. OMG! It is so pathetic! I loved Apple products, but this is too much!

My plan - and same 4 others: lets go low tech! Lets move data offline! We fought the Stasi in Germany. Next is the german secret service and the NSA. Keep your dirty fingers away from our data!

Few things don't make sense to me, why get rid of the ip5, and keep the 4s?? This means they have to keep supporting the smaller screen, and non-lightning plug for even longer.
No they don't have to support anything. The iPhone 5 production line is needed to build the 5c. No one needs the old machinery that produced the iPhone 4 and 4S back in the day. These capacities can be used for free, for the "free with contract" phone. It makes sense from the view of the producer, not from the view of the customer.

What you mean main line stolen? The cabling for a whole town?

Yes, exactly. Sold for the copper. Telmex has a monopoly on landlines and internet where we live so they are in no hurry to get it back up, I'm sure it's telmex employees stealing it. Telmex also does not credit you when the service is down, so pay and live with it or go without.

Some people are saying they should have lower prices on the 5c. But in the Android/Lumia (Nokia) realms, people are saying that selling phones at breakeven or a loss is an exercise in futility, and question whether certain companies should be in the business.

On the other hand, I really don't like how Apple is now apparently resorting to vaporware, leaking to reporters that "we will have a >4" screen in 2014."

Yes, 64-bit allows for more RAM to be accessed but that does not negate the fact that RAM can be accessed faster then a 32-bit processor. Are you saying that faster floating point computation is limited to only those 64-bit processors that have more then 1GB RAM?

i'm saying that, unless you do a lot of heavy lifting on your smartphone, a 64bit system, while all dandy sounding, doesn't bring any significant real world advantages over plain old 32bit right now

Look at it in a different way: Apple did not get rid of iPhone 5, they simply replaced it with iPhone 5C. All internals are nearly the same, just with a different casing/assembly, bigger battery and stuff like that to modernize and keep the costs down.

There are three tiers:

Low-end: iPhone 4S
Middle: iPhone 5C
High-end: iPhone 5S

Apple've updated the middle/high-end tiers only today.

Dear Apple:

Please explain WHY $100 to jump from 16GB to 32GB.
And I'm not even asking where is the SD card slot.
Get on with the program! Competition is catching up.

You've been a member of MacRumors since 2007 and you are seriously asking this question?!?

They've been milking this for years

This is reason #2 why I would not buy a 2012 iMac 21.5"- no user upgradeable RAM so we are forced to pay Apple prices. And they call that brilliant design. If they keep this up... people do not like to be treated like stupidos and do have options.

So, to sum up. In the 41 months since the iPhone 4 was released, we have:

-- A faster CPU
-- Siri
-- A screen that's bigger by 0.5 inches in one dimension
-- A better camera
-- A fingerprint reader
-- More colors

And we are still paying 2010 prices for flash memory that costs less than a quarter of what it did. A 64 gig USB 3 stick is $30, 64 gig high speed SSD's are in the $60 range. upgrading the iPhone to 64 gig is still $200. Even though the OS and Apps have grown over time, the flash size is still the same.

I think the celebrations are well underway at google and samsung. Even Steve Ballmer has got to be laughing right now.

Seriously?

That's the 5 things that have changed in 41 months? How about:

  • 64 bit processing
  • Innovations in the manufacturing process
  • A complete OS re-design (and the development tools to go with it)
  • A new ethos towards standard installed apps (who else is giving quality apps away for free?)
  • Completely new materials used in manufacturing (anodisation and sapphire are not cheap)
  • A divergence in the product line making the device available to a wider market (although still not really producing a "budget" product - and I'm not sure I want them to either)
  • Increased security with hardware controlled fingerprint scanning (lots of other security features like remote wipe etc too)
  • A massive increase in GPU speeds
  • A new connector that just makes sense (no matter how many people think USB is a good idea!)
  • Better materials throughout
  • A streaming music service
  • Cloud based storage & backup
  • Cloud based software (iWork suite etc)
  • True multiple device synching
  • Tighter integration between mobile and desktop devices
  • Better mobile network speeds and compatibility
  • New co-processors
  • Better power management
  • A replacement for SMS/MMS service
  • Voice calling using data instead of expensive cellular calls
  • Not just Siri (beta) but a much improved Siri now able to compete with other offerings
  • Better battery life despite all the improvements
  • And many, many incremental changes to the underlying software (some minor some pretty major)

I could no doubt go on and on but I don't want to sound like a broken record. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect - nothing ever is!

I do agree though that the pricing of the upgraded flash is pretty steep but with all the cloud options nowadays I've never managed to max out my 16GB so it's a choice. Also the pricing is largely down to supply and demand (although there's probably a bit of Apple-up-selling premium there too)

Simply put, it's very easy for you to criticise (I'd be interested in what contributions you've made to advancements in technology over the last 41 months) and at the risk of sounding like a complete fan-boy can you honestly say that any other company has done so much for the tech industry in the past 10 years?

OK, I admit it, I am a fan, but only because no other company has been so successful in being able to keep improving their products in a way that makes them easier, more accessible, more fun, more intuitive, more feature packed, more secure, more reliable, less expensive and maybe most importantly do all this will keeping exceptional levels of customer support.

I for one will be queueing for the 5S - if you're not impressed by it, then don't buy it - I somehow doubt they'll have a problem selling them. I personally don't see me changing over to Samsung or Google any time soon (that's just my choice)

Flash memory is getting ridiculously cheaper, yet over time, we do not see iPhone costs reflect this at all. I'm sure this was the point...

People need to read the hands on first impressions of the 5C. I have yet to find a tech site that said it felt or looked cheap. In fact several said this is the way to do plastic.

My feeling is the plastic phone is more about product differentiation than trying to make something cheap. There's a clear distinction now between the flaghship and its cheaper sibling. And people will pay extra for good quality. I guess we'll find out if Apple made a mistake on pricing, but it doesn't appear the "cheap" moniker is applicable. Unless those people using that term think the Lumia's are cheap too?

Reminds me of some other products
Mac book,Mac book Pro
iMac,Mac Mini
iPad,ipad Mini
A whole range of iPods
iPhone5s,iPhone 5c,iPhone 4s

So, to sum up. In the 41 months since the iPhone 4 was released, we have:

So your saying that every part of the phone has gotten better.

and its 0.5" diagonally, so its not in one dimension.

Well according to this article:
http://www.zdnet.com/the-iphone-5s-goes-64-bit-will-it-matter-7000020497

Apple needs 64-bit for fingerprint authentication as well as the camera features the company has added to the latest iPhone.

I guess there is a real world advantage for having a 64-bit processor right now. And games are heavy lifting on a phone.

Funny that I had to watch a 30 second Samsung ad before I could see the video linked in this post.

More colors mean fewer capacity options. 5 colors times 3 sizes would be overkill. 10 different 5C models need to be enough. For the 5S its 3 colors times 3 sizes, 9 different models. And the 4S in 2 colors same size.

So we already have 21 iPhones, not including different GSM and CDMA models.

Wow they'll need to buy a computer just to keep track of all that!If they added one more size it would be impossible with today's technology!

In response to some comments about the 5C....$99 is cheap and low-cost. It's half of what the entry level 5S retails for. And, Apple is determined to offer LTE on ALL their phones now across the board. A new phone they are putting out this year is not going to ship with 3G data speed.

5C stands for "cost" and "color"

5S stands for "special" or "special edition"

Hard to argue this "round" will gain little new traction for Apple... the excitement just isn't there, it's sort of a big "meh".

Certainly not going to hurt Apple, but I wouldn't expect them to gain market share with these "new" phones.

I am pleased by one aspect of this... with the new 5S, a lot of people will dump their "old" iphone 5 phones for the "latest and greatest". Meaning I can buy one off contract used for cheap! (put aside the older 4s)

I do agree though that the pricing of the upgraded flash is pretty steep but ...
No no no. You are not paying for the flash. The flash is what you get for your money, but not what you are paying it for. You are paying more money, because you have it and there is an option to spend it. The price points are fix. They go in $100 steps higher and higher to as much as you are willing to spend. Sometimes you get nothing for your upgrade money but another color option and the good feeling to be able to spend more than others can afford.

Best Lifestyle App of 2008.
