So Samsung had a specific product that included a working Touch ID equivalent, a 240 fps camera with optical stabilisation as good as the iPhone 6, a 20 nm dual-core processor that surpasses the tests of quad-core processors, a front camera with actually a comparable image quality, a free version of an office suite that actually works, a screen with 400 ppi, a stock OS that gets updated immediately, a cloud-service that actually works (don't... I mean DON'T even think of mentioning Google Drive please... I've been forced to use it since the last two years and our company is going to switch to Dropbox for our next project).

Everybody I've argued with says the same thing : well this Samsung phone had Touch ID, this other Samsung phone had the speed, this other Samsung phone has the display, this other Samsung phone had the best camera, etc. but it's never all in ONE specific phone.

So what's worth fighting for ?

I expected better than speaking points. Why not t talk about all the things Google has invited?

And if Apple decides to take on Search on the same scale as Google, Apple consumers are the losers.

I don't think that's their plan at all. I don't think apple intends on having a search page like Google. But I could see them use their own algorithms / tying into other services for things like Siri and Spotlight that will in turn drive people away from Google as their search engine for certain things. It's already been happening to a certain extent but over the next few years I expect we will see more and more of it. Even Apple won't be able to replace Google as the worlds best search engine. Not without completely changing the way we search for things.

no Google Glass?

He should have worn Google Glass during the interview to show how cool it is.

Scum of the earth Schmidt ..

Burn in hell Scmidt.

How can you guys talked like this about another human being whom you don't know and never met?

I understand you may not care for his company's business practices but to say things like this says more about you than him. It's disgraceful and you should be ashamed.

Where'd this whole -gate naming convention come from? (Yes, I know about celebgate, but why -gate??)

It originated with Watergate. A presidential scandal in the 70's.

They have already released it. It's Spotlight Search and its fast and providing more relevant info daily. Maps in now integrated in a way that blew me away. Just start typing a nearby business in spotlight on the iPhone and watch what happens. I'm glad they are attacking behind the scenes

I just typed "Chinese food" into Spotlight Search. It gave me links to three Chinese restaurants. In Denver. Which would be great, except I don't live anywhere near Denver...

"Samsung had these products a year ago"

I don't seem to remember a high end android phone as thin, lite and with a build quality like the iphone 6.

Exactly.

I also don't remember a high-end Android phone running iOS either.

It's not just the hardware that people like about iPhones... it's also the software.

Yes Mr. Schmidt... Samsung had "a phone with a 5.5" screen" a year ago... but it wasn't an iPhone.

Similarly... HP and Dell could make all sorts of computers... but they won't be Machintoshes.

Build quality ? Agree - Bendgate doesn't change my mind on that part.

BUT yeeesssss iPhone is 2012 hardware compared to many highend Android phones. But that doesn't matter because of the brilliant OS it has.

Google never offered any money to Apple

I'm just quoting from Isaacson's book from the meeting between Jobs and Schmidt at the Palo Alto restaurant. (Jobs turned down a money offer)

The pathetic thing is that Google actively manipulates this competition though its search/advertising business.

Competition way oversold

Competition as a driver toward excellence and innovation is way oversold.

Very few human endeavors are races, and the ones that are, become corrupt.

Coöperation, on the other hand, drives most of what is excellent.

He just doesn't understand that being first out with something makes it the best for customers. As long as he focuses on being first, he'll continue to loose the bulk of sales. Apple focuses on benefits for specific sectors, and creates products that best provide those benefits. Google and Samsung focus on features and attempt to get them to market first. Features need to provide the proper benefits to be of value.

He understands. He's just saying what he's supposed to say. He's not going to admit he wished people lined up like that for devices running Android.

They already use their own in-house search algorithms for Apple Maps POIs. It sucks.

Competition is to see which company can make the crappiest products.

Apple has been been on track lately making crap with the bendgate, updategate, ios8 gate.

No wonder the competition is brutal

You know it's all in your heads only, right? People like you love to create sensationalism by magnifying every little reports out there. Those gates are more exaggerated than they actual are. Everything bends under extreme use, every updates contain small errors (as long as they are pulled and being fixed, what's wrong with that?) and iOS 8 is running fine on hundred of millions iDevices out there. Stop trippin'.

The guy even looks like a looser. Not quite sure how Steve managed to have moments of such bad taste. The only thing he has right is that competition from Google is a good thing to make Apple spank their rear end harder.

I don't think the word "spank" means what you think it means.

Android is CRUSHING iOS in marketshare. The new iPhones will help, but only the 6+ has a competitive display. Most people don't know much about cameras so they figure higher MPs is always better.

Android L will be instructive in what the next few years look like for Apple. If Google fixes stability and performance issues, Apple will never regain lost market share. Most Mac/iPhone users I know buy the overpriced hardware to use the OS, so once the OS lead evaporates, there is no reason to pay twice as much for a device that's too thin.

Exactly. Except for when Apple is first, as with the retina iPhone display or 64-bit SoC. Then it's innovation.
