The TrueDepth camera system is NOT FaceID ... FaceID is a feature of the TrueDepth camera system
No-one is saying they put together the whole system in a short space of time. It's not inconceivable that they put the authentication part of it together in a short space of time tho. The way things have been with recent releases, the main point of it was probably the Animoji!
Have to disagree...those masks they used to try to throw it off? Not cheap and not quick to make either. I think they always intended it as authentication all along. Though I'll agree that they probably wanted to keep TouchId as well, but found out they couldn't so the they were a bit painted into a corner to delivery it as authentication faster.

1 Screen size

If you're upgrading from the 6/6S/7, then the screen size of the X will simply be stretched. If however you're upgrading from a Plus model, your screen will be narrower, albeit longer. This to me is a deal breaker. I am a Plus owner, I don't want to be watching media on a narrower but stretched screen.

2 The notch.

Have you ever had dinner with someone and as they're talking to you you lose focus of what they're saying because you noticed they have sauce or food stuck to the side of their lip? Well the notch is not too dissimilar. My eyes are drawn to it. If it bothers me, it will bother you. To those who say it won't bother you, you haven't got the device yet.

3 It is not edge to edge display

I still see bezels. They may be thinner, but they're still there. Rumours early on suggested the X would be like a slate of glass. Sorry, but it's not. Far from it. There are bezels there. Throw in the notch, throw in the black borders that the software will put in, throw in the narrower screen size to the Plus, and you're not really watching content on this magnifificent edge to edge giant screen, are you? You will be disappointed.

4 No home button

For 10 years you have used the home button. Up until the 5, it was a push and then a slide across. From the 5s, it was simply a push. Worked beautifully. I myself never registered all of my fingers for touch ID, I never registered my two little fingers, so if I just wanted to see the time or a notification without opening the phone, I'd use my little finger. That will be no more with the X. Now you got to get used to making sure the phone sees you, wait a little bit, then swipe up. Don't underestimate how this will force you to change your habits, when you''re driving, when you're in a meeting, when you're half asleep or in any situation when you shouldn't be looking at your phone. You will not be able to discreetly unlock your X. Think about it, for 10 years you touched a button, now you got to look at it, wait a couple of seconds, and swipe up. I'm sure there will be many other instances which will play out when you use the device.

5 Face ID

Following on from point 4, Face ID was not Apple's preference. It is simply the technology Apple had to fall back on when they realised that their preference would not be workable in time for the launch. They wanted touch ID under the screen. This in itself is an admission from Apple that touching your phone is still the best and securest method to unlock your phone, though Apple will never publicly admit it, except of course when screen touch id is available in a future phone and they will spend half the keynote talking about how it pisses all over Face ID. Apple wanted screen touch id, we all wanted screen touch id , but not to be. Instead, you will be getting a product which Apple added as a compromise. Basically, if Apple could have got screen touch ID to work, it would have been in the X. Samsung couldn't get touch screen ID to work, so it put the touch ID button at the back. Apple couldn't get screen touch id to work, so it went with Face id. What's the difference, they are both inferior compromises? The 8 Plus will still have the trusty home button with touch ID that you have all grown to love.

6 Two handed use

When the 6 Plus was released 3 years ago, this place was in meltdown about the iPhone no longer being a one handed device. Well the X will take it to another level. The screen is now longer, yes shorter bezels at the top and bottom, but unbelievably, the X won't come with reachability. Expect to see that back in a future software update or device once Apple realises that they screwed up in getting rid of reachability. But, and this is a huge but, you have to swipe down right of the notch for control centre and left of the notch for notifications. Good luck with your one handed use X owners.

7 Specs

There is alot of similarities between the 8 Plus and the X. Both will have similar cameras, the same glass back, wireless charging, same storage capacity, same water resistant rating, both will have 3 gigs of ram, both will have the same A11 chip and both will have augmented reality. To me, the only benefit you're gonna get with the X over the 8 Plus is a little bit more with the camera and Animojis. But the 8 Plus camera will be a beast and I'm tipping after 2 weeks, if not 2 days, X users will over the animojis. But you see, the 8 Plus will have its own advantages, a wider screen and touch id. Honestly, is the X that much of a superior device?

8 Colours

Not a biggy, but the gold colour the 8s will come in is probably the sleekest colour I have seen on an iphone. It looks magnificent. For those who still see the iphone as a fashion accessory, which I personally don't, you won't get the X in that colour.

9 Price.

The X will be the most expensive iphone in history. If you live in Australia like me, you'll be forking out $1,800 for the 256g model. That is not only insane, it is a rip off. If you want to fork out that much for a phone with a narrower screen than a Plus, a notch which will block your content, a device you cannot use with one hand, no trusted touch id home button and Face Id which was Apple's second choice because it was not good enough to make screen id work, then be my guest, you've got more dollars than sense.

10 First Gen

It is a first gen device. Buyer beware. Beware beware beware. I'm sure in years to come the notch will go, reachability will be back, the bezels will be thinner, the width of the screen will be equal to the Plus and touch id will be back bigger and better than ever, under the screen.. and then I will get myself an X...but until then, beware the X.

You have been warned.

AKA 10 reason to justify to myself why I'm happier with the cheaper phone.

In turn I could write an essay about why it's better to buy the iPhone 7 over the 8.

If I had listened to all the horror stories about the 7+ last year I would never have bought it. Turns out it's still good as new and still a pretty amazing iPhone. When comes the time to get a new one, I know it will be either an X or the next version of the X... I don't quite get why some people feel the need to patronize others on their tastes and purchases.

I suppose it's a good thing that Apple has come up with a product that people can throw their money at in order to feel superior. Apple gets more money and the people feeling inferior get a boost for a year or so. Actually, less than a year. Anyway, just don't expect me to care one bit :)

I do find it amusing that some people put on blinders and completely ignore everything else just because there's something shinier. The iPhone X is a sweet piece of hardware, I won't deny that, but it's full of compromises and questionable design decisions because apparently bezels somehow became the spawn of Satan. Depending on what's important to each individual person, this may not be a big deal or it may be a deal breaker. To me, the iPhone X is two steps forward and one step backward when compared to the regular sized iPhone 8. If you're in the market for a regular sized iPhone and don't mind waiting and paying extra for that, great - go for it! Compared to the 8+ though, it's more two steps forward and two steps backwards. That would be fine if the price and availability would be the same. Sacrifice some here to get some there. Problem is, that's not the case. You're paying a premium for the X and will most likely have a hard time getting it this year. That just sounds like a bad deal to me and because I don't get that "feeling superior' kick from owning the leatest greatest, there's not that either. Funny thing is, if Apple had slapped an OLED display in the 8+, I would have paid that premium.

Oh, and then there's the fact that just because there's an iPhone X... that doesn't detract anything whatsoever from the iPhone 8. It's still a sweet phone. It's still better than the 7. It's still waaay overkill for what most people need. There will be millions upon millions wishing they could just afford an 8 (for that feeling of superiority). Finally, for what it's worth, it's the best looking iteration of the design that the iPhone 6 introduced. To me, it finally looks like what it was supposed to look like when the 6 was revealed. Remeber those ghastly antenna lines they've been removing over the years? Yeah... pretty much gone. The gold version now looks classy rather than tacky. I have a feeling we will see something similar with the X design over the years.
[doublepost=1505557181][/doublepost]

I think the Samsung S8+ you listed in your signature line looks 100 times better than the iPhone X.

Two steps forward, two steps back, bang on point.

You can dream up all the excuses in the world to console yourself that you are not getting an iPhone X, but deep down you know the iPhone X is the best smartphone Apple has ever made. Any lesser model you choose is inferior - end of story.
Has no Touch ID. Was supposed to. That's a fail for me. That's very inferior. The 8 series has Touch ID and apples "flagship" phone doesn't. Keep in mind that they were supposed to have Touch ID on the x, but it didn't work out

What's the source on that?

Disagree with all your reasons. Would never buy an 8 or 8 plus now, especially since I have a 7 plus. They all will look like and act like old phones once the X is released.
Look, not act, they have the same processor and SoC

OP, from your post its obvious you can't afford yourself the new and shiny iP-X, so you created this list of 'problems-issues-disedvantage' to convince yourself the 8 Plus is better... :D

About the Face ID that everyone concern, its new tech that most of the ppl dont have experience with - we will have to wait till the public (aka paying beta users) can put their hand on it (or in that case their faces :p) to know how good or bad its working.

Please refrain from making stupid assumptions. I earn decent enough money to buy anything I want. I gave 10 reasons and yet you chose to use the one option which can be used as a personal attack against me. Go away.

I think some Plus users will be greatly disappointed with the X. Just as many will overlook the X’s design deficiencies or not notice at all.

I personally will only consider the X-Plus next year.

The Plus users might be disappointed because of battery life. I have a Plus phone almost exclusively because of the added battery life over the standard model. You'll note Apple says that the X has a battery life which "Lasts up to 2 hours longer than iPhone 7." That's a nice way to say that the battery life isn't as good as the 7 or 8 Plus.

Stop assuming what economic condition people are in. I was likely going to buy the x, even at its price. When I actually saw how ugly the phone looked I balked. The bezels are still huge, and the OLED screen doesn't make a mind blowing difference in functionality. That phone's is downright ugly. Again, lets all be civil, stop assuming that the only reason someone would chose the 8 over the x is because of price. This is a complex decision involving many factors for people

Everyone.

I just looked at this IG account. Now it all makes sense what the OP says. He should definitely get an Iphone 8 plus. The biggest and heaviest iphone ever.

My IG preferences however correlate with an iphone x.

LOl you honestly think she's fat? She's curvy but no where near fat. Have a look at her post yesterday with the boobies in the red dress, smokin hot. I feel sorry for any chick that get's with you hahaha, you're gonna make her feel paranoid. You're harsh man.

So you keep saying. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I think differently. The notch, as a device, is essential. Would you prefer no front facing camera? None of the other stuff? You don't like that it protrudes but you're quite happy to live with the ugly bezels you currently own on the Plus. Good for you. I wouldn't touch your phone with a barge pole. That's the beauty of having choice, right?

Better screen than the plus, in terms of quality. No bezels. Better camera. Face ID will be fine (you've no reason to think otherwise at this time). Protruding camera lens isn't a flaw, it's a style you don't like. No headphone jack, fine whatever.

Oh, give us all a break. You don't get to "warn" anyone. We all know what we're in for. We all have our preferences and we'll choose accordingly. You'll stick with your Plus and I'll get a better phone ;)

Plenty of bezel is visible on the silver model.

It failed at the keynote(no matter what face ID apologists say

You are assuming the X will be a better phone. You have not even received it yet. Give it 6 months before you say it is better. At least I have some knowledge of how the 8 will work, you have absolutely nothing other than the sale's pitch that Apple gave at the keynote on which to base your opinion. I bet if next year's X looks like a turd and only comes in the colour brown you will buy it because Apple said it's the best looking phone they have ever made.

Yeah, with that big honkin' 6.26" screen that's rumored to arrive.... come to papa..... got pants and shirts with oversized pockets on order :D

I switch between the iPhone 7+ and Galaxy S8+. I don’t really regard either as big phones. Or at least not excessively so.

I usually wear gloves size medium. Both go into back pocket without issue.

The 8-plus is a tried and true design with crazy good internals(same as the X)-and it’s the final and best iteration of the venerable Plus series. It has less pixels to push than the X, so it’ll probably run faster overall. Battery life is also shaping up to be the best in the lineup as well. The design might not be exciting anymore, but It’ll be an AWESOME phone for years to come.

Personally, I agree with you, and would not spend a grand on a first gen product. For example: the original 6-plus had too little RAM and suffered the widespread touch screen issue. A year later the much better 6S Plus arrived with more RAM and stiffer aluminum. I’m fascinated with the novelty of the X, but I’m just not comfortable actually buying one until it gets a year of real world abuse.

The X hasn’t earned the title of “best” iPhone yet. I hope it’s as amazing as they want it to be, but the price is too risky. If yo NEED an upgrade this year, the 8 plus is the rock solid choice this time around.

If only all the naysayers stuck to their guns, it would be a breeze pre-ordering on the 27th but alas we all know they will be the first ones hitting refresh at 12:01pdt

Man of my word. I’ve already got the 8+ and Series 3 on the way.

The X is not being considered in 2017.

You have been warned.

Sooooo, you label the post 10 reasons why "you" (meaning we, the audience) will regret the X. So, let me meet you with a stern nope.

1) It'll take all of 1 week of use to get familiar with the new format of screen

2) Non issue. Some may like it, some may hate it, most will get used to it and ignore it. Also, video doesn't natively get played over the notch.

3) It's the closest to edge to edge we've ever gotten on an iPhone. I've always hated the huge bezels on the iPhone.

4) Oh no. Having to get used to one motion instead of a push... rough. (p.s. If you're using your phone while your driving... You're part of the problem with the rise in distracted driving accidents. No respect.)

5) It's what we have. Don't like it? Don't use it.

6) I'm sure my one handed use will be the same as using the behemoth of the 7 plus. Just a few minor adjustments.

7) The loss of bezels makes it worth it

8) Always used black anyway.

9) I'll spend $13 more a month than I'm spending right now. I spend more than that on **** snacks in a week. No big. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

10) If people don't buy first gen products, products would never get a 2nd gen. I hate this tired argument.

I haven't been warned. I just see someone who has decided they don't want the X and wants everyone to agree with him. If you don't want it... don't buy it. Those of us who do want it, will buy it, and the majority will enjoy it.

I think those that want to X should get the X and those that want the 8 or 8+ should get it. Everyone can spend time writing out rationalization and justifications for their decision.

I can't say I hate or love the X as I've yet to see or use one. I can say that I know I will or would like the 8+ because I've owned and use an 6+. What I will say is that all those now talking smack about the bezels yet the freaking phone you probably have in your pocket was the greatest thing when you got it. Oh but that phone is now old and ugly and somehow just totally inferior. Sorry, but I have to CALL BS!

Again, just get whatever you want and you honestly don't have to come on Mac Rumors and justify which you will or won't get. Be happy and enjoy!

Not that anyone cares, but I will be getting the 8+ because of Touch ID as I am not interested in holding up a phone to my face to unlock it, but hey that is me. Have fun! :)
