Battery & Memory Test
I had to move my battery & memory test here to free up character space on entry 1. A link to here will be posted in entry one at the bottom for future reference or changes.
BATTERY & MEMORY TEST: I am using FreeMemory to base all of my tests/results with I have also used my Classic iPhone, 2.2.1 as a comparison tool.
Note: Using FM I wanted to discover where some of the memory was going and found some interesting results. I noticed that the Phone and Mail are always active so tested using Safari and iPod.
On the Classic I opened the iPod app and then closed it using the Home Key and then opened FM and noticed that iPod was still showing as active. I then opened iPod and Force Closed by pressing and holding the Home Key, then opened FM and iPod was gone. The difference in Memory usage was 4-5mb.
On the 3G I performed the same test as above but had to alter shut down methods because force shut down does not currently work on 3.0 so I started from a power off, turned on and checked FM then opened iPod and closed just using the home key. Checking FM showed the same as above, the app was still actively using an average of 5mb.
Using Safari on the Classic, I checked FM and it Maintained an avg of 20mb free. Opened Safari and closed with Home Key avg dropped to 15mb and it still showed as active. Forced Shut down returned it to 20mb and did not show anymore.
Safari on 3G using the New Feature. Again starting from a shut off iPhone to turning on and opening FM showed iPhone at an average of 36mb free memory. Opened Safari, loaded a page and kept it loaded but shut Safari down by using the Home Key reduced the Free Memory to an avg 22mb and it showed that Safari was still active. Opened Safari back up and closed all pages (New Feature) which brings up a blank page and memory increased to an average 33mb and no longer showed Safari. This was a whopping 11mb difference.
Conclusion: If a user opens Safari and the iPod during any active period and then closes just using the home key still continues to use 10-16mb of memory on both versions of software. These apps are NOT closing completely when the home key is pressed thus causing memory leak and IMO responsible for App crashes. This is why it is recommended to turn off the iPhone when installing new apps or memory hungry apps. This is NOT a 3.0 issue only. If you force close these apps then it frees up memory and it also generates a crash report. These tests were performed multiple times with the same results.
