Aluminum makes a lot of sense, I always wanted a macbook that has characteristics of the pro like horrible wifi reception. Please God let there be something else to this rumor.

I hear the glow Apple logo on the back is now going to be powered plasma antenna for all the wireless items inside. Now that that they are using LED back light and can't get the glow that way.

More aluminum, I can't wait!

I love crappy Wifi! In my house, I simply adore how my PowerBook's signal it gets off of my router is terribly slow, while my MacBooks is blazing fast, while my PowerBook is a room away from the router.

The Wifi reception is aluminum products if so extremely amazing that at work where I use a MacBook Pro, it can't keep a signal and when it has one, it lasts for five minutes or so and moves terribly slow, meanwhile my MacBook can pick up the same signal from the same location, faster than I can at home!

Ethernet is so much better anyway, after all, Apple always cares about the environment, eliminating all of those "useless" cables is crazy talk, very clearly they believe that they are perfect to use and mobility is for losers.

[/sarcasm]

I hope to God in the next MacBooks Apple fixes the Wifi issues (which I doubt) otherwise my next computer in three years or so may not be one.

A tablet's more likely. I think the Mac mini will be updated with the iMac in November.

I disagree. A tablet is less likely IMO.

A netbook makes more sense. Macs are typically positioned to be great people computers. Great for surfing the web, listening to music, photo organising, instant messaging, that kind of thing. They're great media editing tools as well, but that market is irrelevant to the argument of netbooks. Netbooks, too, are designed for great web access and people-centered applications. OSX would fit this market well, and the OSX UI is well suited for small displays (large items like the Dock make it easy to launch applications, resolution-independent UIs are already partially implemented in Leopard). Netbooks are also predicted to account for somewhere like 20-30% of laptop sales this year, which in turn are predicted to account for 50% of computer sales this year. In total, this means between 1 in 6 and 1 in 10 computer sales is predicted to be a netbook. That's a large market. It also lowers the cost of entry in to the Mac system.

That being said, I don't think Apple will launch a netbook. There are great factors for it, but there's too much overlap with the iPhone. It's also a great web device, has even more portability, and an even better UI for small screens. Its handheld form factor also allows it to take advantage of multi-touch, in a way a netbook can't. It also has a low cost of entry, being subsidised by carriers. It also does photos and music better than any netbook out there, by being an iPod with an integrated camera. More products would simply confuse the Apple product line - people wouldn't know whether to get a Macbook Mini or an Air, or an iPhone. Apple is all about simplicity.

As if it weren't obvious before the deduction using the Apple logo. It shows a black notebook and shines a spot light on it symbolizing how the macbook will be seen in a new lift, i.e. in a new case, i.e. silver metal like the rumors suggest.

The size of the laptop in the picture looks like that of a macbook...and the spotlight shining on it allows the aluminum to be seen. I love :apple:.

This is all assuming the size of the Apple logo won't be changes.

Which of course if it was would then render these estimates useless.

The mockups are getting good though. If the MacBook looks like that, hits the aggressive price points we have been hearing about and providing there are no glaring feature omissions, then I am probably upgrading from my MacBook Black (2006). LED screens + any special features will seal the deal.

LOL, I'll be upgrading from my 2000 PII 433Mhz

Yes, you read that right. I've been hogging my wife's laptop since she got it last year. Hell, my Touch is faster than that thing.

I wonder if Apple was actually planning on holding the event on the 14th or if they're doing it just because we were getting impatient.

I really wish Apple would focus more on small rather than thin. I loved the 12" PB.

Agreed, thinness does nothing for portability its more about weight and size. Of course we will be getting a thin macbook the same size as the current one probably just as heavy or heavier.

All of the arguments against aluminum relating to wifi are forgetting something. The macbook pro does get poor wifi reception, however that is more due to the antennae placement than anything else, the air gets better wifi reception than a macbook, because the antennae are in a loop that go around the entire screen in a plastic strip bezel. Maybe they'll learn from that and make that standard?

i love how everyone chips in to figure out and analyze all the info out there. less than a week away!

anyone have any idea about potential matte vs. shiny screens on the new MacBooks??? I really want a matte screen, hate the shiny ones...

Unfortunately, Apple has made it clear in the past that in the consumer realm, glossy is "better". So if you want matte you will most likely have to go pro. Check out the MBA screen - although it's glossy - it looks surprisingly good.

lol, I didn't even notice that was a computer on the invite.

And as for those supposed mockups... how are they any different from a MacBook Air? When I clicked the link, I hoped to find a side view or anything. Those just look like someone did a Google Image search for "macbook air" and copied the first result. Is there some slight, insignificant detail that I may have missed?

I agree! The 12" PB was the best laptop that Apple has made. Dell, Sony, and Lenovo all have laptops in this size range (11-12.1"). Why can't Apple? The MacBook is hardly any smaller than the MBP: http://home20.inet.tele.dk/pressure/MacBookvsPro.jpg

Exactly, we need a 12'' notebook, one of the factors why I, and some of my friends are considering MS-PC is because for some of us thin is nice but small is beautiful.

Give us a 12" now apple!!
