This, but then 90% of Apples customer base really don't care about ARM, M1 or whatever, they just want a device that allows them to do whatever they need to do and for the majority, that is what they have now.
Certainly true. And not in conflict with my post.

Would I love a 16” MBP running Apple silicon? Of course. But if they can’t run Linux using Virtualbox or at least Docker, who is going to buy these? It doesn’t matter if it’s 10x faster if you can’t actually use it to do work.
My server guys told me that they could run all our server software except one application on an M1 chip (ignoring the fact that our server software runs on some servers in a rack in our server room, not on any Macs).

14 inch with apple silicon would be a buy for me. Just wish they would reduce (or remove) the touchbar, and include MagSafe, hdmi (I know usb c is smart ect but every meeting room, tv or other presentation setup is still HDMI...) although I doubt that would ever happen

The 99% of MacBook Pro users who don’t run Linux using virtuabox or docker?

I assume your post was sarcasm.
In an earlier company where I worked, which had a company wide Windows license, all the _successful_ sales people didn't get PC laptops, but MacBooks, with IT installing Windows on them. Not even dual booting, just plain Windows. So Apple will lose its tiny, tiny market share in the "PC laptop" market :)

There will be a market place for MacBook-lookalike PC laptops :)

I really hope we see them get a dedicated GPU in there somehow, especially with the 16 inch. My 2013 pro has been holding up so well. But man I would love to get an Apple silicon mac into my workflow. Super excited to see what they come up with.

Except that the first generation M1 chips is running about 3 times faster than the equivalent Intel Macs.

For the average user what they already have is faster than they need, they will care less about 3x faster until they need to upgrade. It's laughable that so many believe people need 3x faster when they are not even pushing what they have.

Many millions of Apple customers who don't have any idea of what Linux, Virtualbox, or Docker are, or don't need them. I wouldn't be shocked if that were at least 90% of Apple's customer base.
No, but they know Windows and there is a large resistance to shift platform. The reasoning is the "I have PC a work so it easiest to get one for home". Enterprise will not buy M based Macs because the are more efficient as they will not fit in the enterprise software system. I doubt the M chips will shift the market in 2021. 3-5 years perspective - yes.

Um, the majority of people in the market for these machines. I do “work” on my computer. Don’t need Linux.

I am actually excited to step up from the 13 to the 16-inch. the 13-inch MBP is plenty powerful for my uses but I find that even though I have a desktop with two monitors, I still prefer using my laptop so the extra screen real estate will be nice.

I think I'm more excited for a 14.1" MacBook Pro than the next generation iPad Pro. My 2017 13" MacBook Pro is still kicking along nicely, especially on macOS 11, and it's just a non-TB 8GB RAM model, but I'll be ready to upgrade later this year.

Disagree 100% !

If Apple wanted to increase their market share, they could have done that with their "first wave" of M1 Mac products !

Instead, they went after (Higher) Gross Margin !
Huh?? The MacBook Air and Pro are both significantly more powerful computers than the models they replaced and cost stayed the same. If people don't see the value in that, I'm not sure what to say. Apple is never going to be the affordable electronics company comparable to many of the PC and Android companies.

I think many here are under estimating the commercial use of MBP's in the commercial space. The current and previous companies I work for are, for the most part, MBP based for the developers. Just plain old better laptops for developers.

The current company I work for has a do not purchase M1 based MBP until we are sure we can virtualize Windows/Linux.

I think the 99% number is silly. I don't know if companies like the one I work for make up 20% of Apples MBP marketshare, but, I would think it is greater than 1% for sure.

But I also suspect full X86 virtualization will be around the corner. For both M1's and Windows running on ARM.

Pretty sure Docker's already got an early release going https://www.docker.com/blog/download-and-try-the-tech-preview-of-docker-desktop-for-m1/

I'm a full stack (but primarily front-end) dev and I'm planning on going 14" M1 as soon as it's released. It'll get figured out by then.

As a developer, I have moved a lot of my work to the cloud. The versatility is great and you can do work from anywhere that has internet access.

16“ - I‘m in! :)

Till then I am a happy MB Air M1 user :D
Same here, except MBP M1. I honestly had no intention of getting an M1 at this point but my 15" 2016 keyboard has been falling apart and it's to the point of unusable now. Let me also say I was hoping for an 11th gen i9 MBP to get as I do have a bunch of VMs to run. This M1 machines is so much better than any other laptop I've ever used. Silent all the time no matter what you throw at it, fast as hell and a much better keyboard. I got a dedicated SFF Xeon machine to run all my VMs as I am staying with Apple silicon because it is so good. Basically this machine is a stopgap until the 16" machine arrives.

I might get one when they come out. However, I'd want an easy way to use Windows on it as there are several Windows-only games I play. I know that there are workarounds with developer previews, but I'm too lazy to do all those steps. Plus, I want it to run as near-natively as possible.

windows games are x86... so... wait for developer for recompile to ARM for Apple Silicon or keep a pc for games.... I think eventually games will be made for Apple Silicone...

Both are wrong. Most of the people that gets the high-end, most powerful MacBook pros are people that fully use the resources. So, Docker support is important. Good news is that Docker already released a preview support for M1. Vbox may take longer to support (if will), but you have another alternatives such as Parallels.

Developers should move to the cloud anyways, most clouds are bringing remote Apple Silicon Macs and hopefully Apple releases it's "Apple Cloud Infrastructure" for the public soon.
