Neat. Just got the keyboard replaced on my 2016 13-inch Macbook Pro and along with that came a fresh battery so I'm probably good for another three years, but it's always nice to see new products coming down the pipeline.

Hopefully we get a 14-inch model in the future.

Wouldn't a 14" MBP step on the toes of the MBA?? Spec out the latter enough and the price would seem to be little different I would think

Not exactly a profile in courage that Gruber started taking swipes at Ive after he’s basically retired from the company. Today he says the buck stops with Ive for something from 4 years ago that was only fixed today. Really? So there’s no one else in the company that could have fixed this over the last 4 years? Only him? And only he gets to decide what ships and what doesn’t?

According to Apple’s bio of Dan Riccio:

Dan Riccio is senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, reporting to CEO Tim Cook. Dan leads the Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod engineering teams which have delivered dozens of breakthrough products.

Are we to really believe he and his hardware engineering teams had nothing to do with the MacBook Pro keyboards? That his teams had no say in the design and engineering of the keyboard? If not then what the heck does his team do? And how come most of the patents around the butterfly mechanism have hardware engineers listed as the inventors?

i just think it was a problem they didn’t expect and had no idea how to manage effectively without breaking their plans completely for the next 5 yrs. I can’t remember keyboard failure issues this problematic for a single product in my life time. Can you?

So I think that theyd based all their buying and forward design thinking on the butterfly switch keyboards. The economies of scale calculations for 4 yrs of buying the same keyboards etc.. we’re all mapped out. And then they got caught out.

i think the decision must have come from marketing that even though they are still selling MacBook Pro’s quite well, the noise from this faulty keyboard thing is really damaging the brand. So I think Tim said let’s go back to basics and also see if we can fix it at the same time. See what’s quicker.

i wonder what the return / fix rate is like on the last set of MacBook pro’s / airs. I’m not hearing the same amount of problems so maybe the issue is fixed now it they already had the new 16inch ready with the magic keyboard.

but anyways, if it took 4 yrs to solve for a company like Apple you can bet it wasnt Arrogance. Just they probably didn’t know how to deal with the issue For a long time.

To put 1mm into perspectives mechanical switches such as Cherry MX typically has 4mm of total travel distance, and many scissor switch has 2mm.

Take it as you well, but I don’t think 1mm look too terrible for a thin and light focus design.

Maybe. But I want to try before I buy.

Finally, that’s the Apple I want: no ********, no stupid trade-offs, just smart, reasonable, quality products. We all knew what was wrong with the MacBook lineup, it was just a matter of Apple willing to start fixing it.

Thinking back to last years Black Friday sale we should be getting a $200 Gift Card with a purchase of a Mac. That will pretty much cover AppleCare for free. Definitely worth waiting until Black Friday IMO.

i bought one, its time. i usually wait for reviews and a version revision but my 4-5 yr old mac pro is showing its age.
Personally I will wait for the reviews and then I will decide if I will replace my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) laptop. It holds on. pretty well after 6 years. I am sure it will hold on for another year without any hiccups.

A more common sense approach is to not buy it the moment it's released and wait a few weeks for feedback before splashing 2.5-6+ grand on new tech.
But you only get a 7-week return window once a year. There are overall laptop issues, and issues with YOUR particular machine. It's a good time of year to buy.

Just compared the physical specs to my 2012 15" rMBP, and the new 16" is, indeed, *smaller* in every dimension and a bit lighter, too. Not by much, mind you, but it is. It's 10% thinner, which boggles my mind, really.

I’m sorry but if they keyboards were this problematic they get fixed, period, regardless of 5 year plans or whatever. Gruber says the buck stops with Ive here. Really? Phil Schiller got up on stage in October 2016 to announce the new MBP with butterfly keyboard. Are we to believe Schiller was on stage announcing a product he didn’t believe in or knew to be faulty? If so what does that say about Schiller?

Base storage is 512. I am STUNNED.

They knocked $1000 off from what I paid for the same specs on the previous model. This is absolutely the best problem to have.

Well, I think you answered your own question about Schiller. He's a marketing guy, and a company man. To be fair, what choice did he have? Pretty sure he had a gun to his head. I mean when Steve asked him to literally jump out of a window, he said "How high?" and then did it onstage. Puppet.

Still no numeric keypad? You can’t buy a PC laptop nowadays this monster size without a numeric keypad.

Monster size laptop? Are you sure you’re on the right forum? Any MacBook is well far from monster size.
Besides that, the keypad isn’t that popular even in really big gaming laptops because very few users have any use for it.

They shouldn't need to be fixed, but the fact is they are that problematic if you are disputing that then I guess that is all we need to know about you and your affair with Apple. It was not so easy to get it fixed, I and many others can vouch for that.

Are we to believe Schiller was on stage announcing a product he didn’t believe in or knew to be faulty? If so what does that say about Schiller?

Possibly, but get real, nobody is going to stand on stage and say "I am not sure about this one, but buy it anyway". I am sure they all believed in it at the time, maybe.
