Personally I was never expecting rounded corners on a notebook display. I guess it's not impossible at some stage, but it doesn't seem all that likely any time soon.

This is not a Jony Ive product where design comes first. This product needs to cool down 96W of heat and is intended for work.

Wow, the Jony Ive backlash begins in earnest. Even though the design of the PowerBook and MacBook Pro models happened on his watch.

The OG MacBook Pro (that looked like the final PowerBooks) is still my favourite, aesthetically.

My wife's iPhone XR was stolen, and thieves easily bypassed faceID, invaded her bank account, and stolen 10k USD. It happened last month.

Sure buddy...

If this is true (big if), the thieves used some sort of GrayKey password cracking device to get passed the lock screen, in which case no phone is safe and it’s not an issue with FaceID. It has to do with the complexity and length of the passcode. People need to understand that basically their entire lives are recorded in their phones, like pictures, addresses, bank apps, emails, etc, and they need to take their phone security more seriously. A 4 digit passcode might stop some random person from accessing your info but it will not stop a hacker, some crime organization, or the police, from cracking into your phone.

I recommend enabling a longer passcode (at least 10 digits long), turning off “USB Accessories“ and turning on “Erase Data” under TouchID & Passcode in Settings.

Wow I hope not...this looks identical to the 15” with slightly reduced bezels. What are they going to offer? Slightly reduced bezels plus a keyboard that doesn’t break from dust?

No, but yes

Edit - Was a joke

Ah yes, the machine that will make you pay extra to get a keyboard that works! Or, if you're poor and can only shell out half the price of a car for your MacBook Pro, then you only get the crappy butterfly mechanism.

I skipped the 2019 8-core 15" because of rumors about this 16".They need to hurry up and release it because I've been hobbling along on a late 2013 and I need an upgrade and more ram.

A lot of us have been skipping the last models and sticking to older rMBP hardware (looking at that Marco Arment article on the best laptop ever made, with he meaning the model before the current one).

Like you, I do my dev and design work on a rMBP 2013 in full thrust, and been postponing my hardware refresh until this 16" babe comes out. I hope we don't get disappointed.

If Apple get's this one right, they will trigger a huge refresh circle.

My 2015 MBP 15" is holding up very well so I'm not in a particular hurry. However, it would be nice to know that Apple has an upgrade waiting for me when the time comes. A 16" screen on a similarly-sized laptop would be a nice bonus. And of course to leap-frog the bad keyboard years.

A little disappointed in the bezels, but we'll see how the final product ends up looking.
I may end up waiting until a major redesign comes out.

Hoping the 13 inch version of the redesign comes with Icelake or Tigerlake, wanting that integrated Thunderbolt 3 :)

I got my Apple Card, locked and loading for a new Macbook Pro 16in for this Christmas :). My 2009 Mac Pro Tower died a couple of months ago so i need a Mac for my home and office. Was thinking about the $7000 new Mac Pro but it would not be utilized just setting at home. So I made a decision to get a $4000 Macbook Pro and upgrade every 5 years to keep current with technology changes. Going to get a Razer eGPU box, i have a Vega 64 card i got for the old Mac pro when it died so, i will running in the external EGPU box for hot graphics performance and then replace my graphics card in a year or two with the latest and greatest AMD video card on the market in the future.

That's a good option in my opinion. I just purchased a Razer Core X and a AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. I know the GPU is not supported yet, but it will certainly happen soon, possibly this month.

I don't think these are place holder images. If you go to the link in the article to the source website, there is a side-by-side comparison of the 2. You can clearly see there is a difference between models in their bezels.

Further, if you look at the keyboards... it looks like the 16 inch one doesn't have a Touch Bar. Look at the side by side image on the top row of keys where it is flat and smooth in the 15 inch, and the 16 inch looks like keys. Or at least, it looks like there is an escape key separate from the Touch Bar.View attachment 870559

Alright now I see the difference in the bezels. But the difference isn't enough. Even Dell is out here creating much better iterations of bezel-less laptops on their XPS line. The only fault is the chin on the XPS is needlessly big but at least they're trying.

This is a major redesign, and there is nothing wrong with the "bezel". Frankly nothing irritates me more than an alleged pro customer bitching about bezels.

I wouldn't expect the MB Pro 16" in 2019. Catalina is way too problematic. I would bet that a spring 2020 would be more in line giving Apple more time to sort out the OS headaches instead of suffering another PR disaster. Even w a Spring release personally I would still wait until a second generation goes into production.

Maybe because that's what you'll be starring at for 8 hours a day for the next years after purchase.

You are absolutely correct in the statement that smaller bezels do make a nicer display except for one critical factor.. if they are adding FaceID to the MacBook, it still needs a bit of bezel to have the components in there. Look at the iPad, for uniformity sake they kept all sides even in size even though the FaceID is located in one side only.

You're out in left field. Catalina is in production, and shipping on every Mac.

macOS may indeed be a disaster right now, but that is irrelevant.

I don't agree that this is inherent at all.

It makes sense to shrink them when the goal is to make the device itself smaller and lighter (like mobile devices). Laptops are somewhat mobile, but they are not held in the air while used. It is not that important unless it is contributing to making the device itself smaller.

This should not be an implicit goal.

I look at the screen.

So, we have confirmation we will get phisical esc key back..
Thank you apple...so already we have 4 possible good things..
1) better/more reliable keyboard
2) physical esc key
3)better cooling
4)higher battery capacity
5ish ) slimmer bezels on sides and top
