With the launch feeling imminent now, all of the other small details of the 16-inch MacBook Pro bubble up.
  • What will it cost?
  • Base configuration still has 256GB SSD?
  • Will it replace the 15-inch?
  • Will it have a scissor switch keyboard?
  • Better key travel?
  • Is going to have an HDMI &/or an SD card slot?
  • 32 GB of RAM max or 64 GB of RAM max?
  • "XDR" branding for the LCD panel?
  • Brighter display than the 15-inch?
  • Core i9 or mobile Xeon processors?
  • 802.11ax (WiFi 6)?
  • Better webcam?
  • Better speakers?
And on, and on...
Forgive me but are there any mobility orientated cpu/motherboard combinations that support 64gb of ram? Everything I have seen in a windows format isn’t really the type of mobile computing device Apple make. If this is an iterative improvement on the 15inch I can’t see either Xeon or 64gb of ram in this model.

It's generally hard for Apple to prevent leaks of its products when they're manufactured in Asia, since they don't have as much control there*. Given this, if the 16" is in fact in production, it's surprising there haven't been any substantive pre-release leaks---i.e., leaks substantive enough to show us what it actually looks like, like we typically see with the iPhones. [*By contrast, there were no pre-release leaks for the Mac Pro, which is assembled in Austin and whose parts are sourced primarily from US manufacturers]

We've heard multiple times over the past few weeks that the launch has been "imminent." Multiple weeks have passed and still nothing. If I had to guess, Apple may release the new 16" MacBook Pro alongside the Mac Pro.

Literally nobody said it was imminent yet you found the need to put quotes around it.

If you click on Buy which brings you to the specific models, you'll see only the 1.4 13" is labeled as new, but granted on the homepage it labels MacBook Pro as new.

Very interesting, I see that now that you mention it. That's in contrast with what I saw in an Apple store earlier today. I casually looked at the 15" MBP and went to the "compare models" option in the Apple pricing app that is loaded on all display computers, and every single 15" absolutely had the "New" badge listed prominently.

I've only seen this $2999 figure on macrumous as random people throwing out the figure - are there any sources other than randomers on macrumours for this figure ?

Total speculation as far as I know. The pricing trend is clear, though. The 2012 Retina MBP was introduced at a higher price point than the previous model, the 2016 MBP redesign was higher than the first-gen Retina MBP, the latest Mac Mini higher than the first gen, etc.

Good point. People could be traveling for a few different Apple products. Has anyone checked Rene Ritchie's Twitter feed?

I actually did earlier, and didn't see anything obvious. I don't usually follow his feed that closely though, so I'm not sure what's "normal" for him.

Keep in mind there's just much less interest in MBPs than iPhones and Airpods. They also don't manufacture them at the same scale so there are fewer manufacturing facilities, fewer people involved, so fewer opportunities for leaks.

Mark Gurman (Bloomberg tech reporter) tweeted last week that it was, in fact, imminent. I'm not sure if I've seen any other reporters say anything so definitive, so it's always possible he's misinformed.

My biggest worry is it will be using nearly 1 year old components. We are not likely going to see updated Intel chips. We could see navi, which was needed. It is just really weird timing for Apple. We are just a few months away from a refreshed lineup. Even if we don't see a design change it will at least be using updated internals. If it is actually in production they can't sit on it long because they are already using old components that will be updated shortly. I just doubt seeing a Macbook Pro launch late November/December when all of the component manufacturers are later in their product cycle.

I think the timing of these production rumors is less about an imminent release and more about Apple trying to ramp up production of this product and import it before they get smacked with tariffs in the US-China trade war.

I'm guessing they will come out sometime this week as I just ordered a refurbished 2019 15 MBP fully loaded.
I just got one 5 days ago. Hoping it comes out before my 14 day return period. Also, is still sealed in box.

It arrived today. I opened the box and started setting it up.Which means the 16inch will get announced this week. Luckily I'll be an Apple Store almost every day this week. Hoping it has something better than the Vega 20 GPU otherwise I might just keep this one.

Apple could at least gives some new emojis to tide us over until this mythical beast is released.

Except wearables and Mac Pro, nothing in the computer line up, and more specifically the Macbook line, has been neither mythical nor beast for the past 3 years. The only beast have been the price...

I think it is very important for Apple to make it right. Damage to MacBook legacy coming from unbalanced design decisions (keyboard, magsafe, ports, functional keys, 128 GB, and, funny enough, shining logo on the back screen) is lasting. When combined with unstable OS and Apple Pricing (TM) things just go they too far.

Is Apple a Streaming/Cloud, but not hardware company now?

18" display, stock 128GB memory, stock 4TB and I'm all over it.

Where did you get that rumor lol? It’s supposed to be a 21” display, stock 1TB RAM, stock 32TB SSD. But who can afford it? It would be $5,999. Yikes! Mac Pro territory o_O

Anyway, you’re trolling again. Your last list was:
1. MagSafe
2. Optional TouchBar
3. New display coating material
4. Scissor switches
5. 2TB SSD stock
6. Upgradable GPU

It’s rumored to be a 16” display instead of a 15”, with most likely a scissor keyboard with a physical escape key.

With any luck it’ll be released tomorrow 🤞

Probably starting around $3k. Maybe $2699. Maybe $3199.

Might start at 512 GB SSD.

In the long run, sure, but they’ll keep the 16 around for pricing reasons for a year or three.

Yes.

Slightly.

No. (Maybe SD but seems unlikely. Certainly not HDMI; that’s simply too thick.)

Could be 64, and I’d love that, but don’t hold your breath.

Maybe, but I’m guessing no. 120 Hz / ProMotion seems overdue but probably not this time.

Maybe?

Slightly higher models but same Coffee Lake Refresh line-up. Maybe a Xeon BTO option. Comet Lake bump with up to 10 cores next June or so.

Only if they want to temporarily waste another chip on that. Maybe. Otherwise, we get it for free in Comet Lake.

Maybe.

Maybe.

64GB ram is essential for a pro designation.

They might just be able to fit that in. BTO option would probably be $999 or $1199.

It is a little unfortunate that the current MBP goes to 32, the iMac Pro to 128 (four times!) and the Mac Pro to 1.5 (48 times!!).

Yep! All I want is 64Gb of ram! I am running a 2017 with 16GB, and I am always maxed out. Photoshop Eats ram, and working with 300+ MP images half the time it just gives up.

For sure! My late 2013 6 core pro became a new machine upon installing 64GB aftermarket ram. (I couldn’t afford the factory ram when I first bought it). I usually have Photoshop and Lightroom open together, with multiple smart objects per composite image, and total ram usage is frequently 30 to 35 GB, with 0 swaps and 0 memory pressure. Makes for very pleasant working. Lots of ram is far more useful imho, than the latest processor and chipset. If the new MacBook doesn’t have a 64GB ram option, then it’ll be a new 2TB hard drive for the old Pro — may do that anyway.

Wonder if they'll improve the thermals on this.

That is an essential, and for that to happen, it will have to be noticeably thicker.

I’m not familiar with the available densities of DDR4 chips so I’m not sure if 64GB would require twice as many chips compared to 32GB, but the CPU supports 128GB when DDR4 is used :p 😂 :)

Small correction, the iMac Pro added official support for 256GB, +$5,200 yikes 😬

The touchbar is here to stay. It was just introduced this year in the 13" MBP. It's not going away. I personally love it.

The best some of you can hope for is that it's made optional.

I can’t imagine they would make it optional, but only time will tell. Those who are determined not to like it have almost certainly not used BetterTouchTool; it’s a game changer imo.

I think the physical escape key will be a very welcome improvement, as will a scissor keyboard with its expected greater travel🤞 and better reliability.

Honestly, I didn't want to say it...but you are right. I don't think it will be optional. The Touchbar is here to stay. And, yes, BTT makes it even better.

I would suggest for those who don't want to play with BTT to get this for their touchbar...
