As a side note, as I mentioned upthread:

Jason Snell of the Upgrade podcast often gets pre-release stuff. They are not recording today because his co-host is traveling. However, they don't have a live recording scheduled, and often when Myke is away they have a guest fill in.

It could just be they will record when they can, and release when they can. Or, Jason is sitting on an embargo. Myke is in Denmark, so I am slightly more leaning towards scheduling. But none of the embargo crowd have mentioned anything about the 16" rumors which is interesting.

I am now leaning more towards an embargo instead of scheduling.

Groan. Its been drawn out so long now that I just dont care anymore.

whenever it does arrive, the price-point is probably going to be beyond ridiculous and i'm almost certain its going to come with the same crappy keyboard...happy to be proven wrong of course.

Can't wait to find out if the Touchbar gets the axe..
The Touch Bar is alive and well...with the faintest possibility of it being optional.

That is a good point. Reduce the bezels on either enough to add 1/2" to the screen and you are 13.8" and 15.9". Round up and bam, 14" and 16" MBPs!
The rumored resolution of 3072x1920 equates out to a 16.4” screen @220.89DPI, which is what Apple deems is Retina resolution for their Mac devices.

Optional touch bar and physical escape key and I'm a buyer. Will finally be able to upgrade from my 2014 MacBook Pro.
Add 6 usb-c ports and I will sell my MBP 2017
I have too many things to connect and the usb hub with its power supply, HDMI, SD card and USB-A dongles dont fit in the “portable” category to me

I will again say this...

I owned the 2017 and 2018 MBP models. Had malfunctioning keys on both machines.

I now own the 2019 13" MBP and the keyboard is so much better.

I am not advocating butterfly keyboards as I would rather have a scissor, but Apple made great strides with this year's keyboard. I would not be devastated if we got it on the upcoming 16" model. Disappointed, yes. Devasted, no.
Yeah I can’t find any evidence online that the 2019 keyboard has failure rate issues. Not saying none have failed but it seems it has a normal level of failure compared the the 2016/17 models.

I appreciate people don’t like the lack of key travel. I assume you get used to it but I know changing between wildly different keyboards is hard to deal with.

Personally I’ll wait for the 16 to come out before I upgrade even if I buy a 15 inch just to be sure I’m fully informed. I am Using a 2012r model and it has been amazing but ram constraints are killing my productivity.

With the launch feeling imminent now, all of the other small details of the 16-inch MacBook Pro bubble up.
  • What will it cost?
  • Base configuration still has 256GB SSD?
  • Will it replace the 15-inch?
  • Will it have a scissor switch keyboard?
  • Better key travel?
  • Is going to have an HDMI &/or an SD card slot?
  • 32 GB of RAM max or 64 GB of RAM max?
  • "XDR" branding for the LCD panel?
  • Brighter display than the 15-inch?
  • Core i9 or mobile Xeon processors?
  • 802.11ax (WiFi 6)?
  • Better webcam?
  • Better speakers?
And on, and on...

I just want to be able to replace the damn battery. my $1500 iPhone let's me replace the battery but my $4500 computer doesn't? so annoying. My AppleCare runs out this month. My battery just ballooned in the nick of time for a free replacement that includes everything glued to the battery(keyboard, Touch Bar etc) Here is hoping I don't have to drop $800 next year because of apple's stupidity.

Max of $199 to replace a supported Macbook battery:

I'm with you here, but still I'd like to ask why – the latest 8-core seems to be pretty nice, from what I read around here.

Just my personal cost/value calculation. A six-core CPU should be plenty for my needs, and all else being equal I'd rather spend on the GPU rather than being forced to upgrade to a more expensive 8-core, which is one of the things that led to me not pulling the trigger on the 2019 15" MBP.

Yeah I don't understand this either. I think the 15-inch is going away.

It will probably go away eventually, but I suspect not this year. The 15" model is still listed as "new" on the online Apple store and in retail stores. Apple could suffer some unnecessary blowback if they were to discontinue a model that still has the "new" tag. That leads me to believe the 16" will initially be introduced as a higher-end alternative to the current 15" (much as the Retina 15" was introduced as a higher-end alternative in 2012), and then the 16" could receive more cost-effective configurations in 2020 that do in fact serve as a replacement for the 15".

Several Chinese tech bloggers who have always been invited to Apple's Keynote events are suddenly travelling to NYC today. Could this be for the private press briefing of the 16-inch MacBook Pro?

Bear in mind it's quite possible this is for the Mac Pro and / or the Apple locator service. I hope it's for the 16" MBP as well, but no guarantees...

If you click on Buy which brings you to the specific models, you'll see only the 1.4 13" is labeled as new, but granted on the homepage it labels MacBook Pro as new.

Yeah, but Jason generally gets laptop products later. If we were talking about an iPad Pro, I'd probably agree with you.

Anyway, I've been calling tomorrow as the date for the past month, so let's see what happens.

If not, I can wait through 2020.

Well, 16-inch MBP rumored to start at $2999 which is way more than 15-inch. Everything is very unclear and I have no idea what Apple is doing.

I've only seen this $2999 figure on macrumous as random people throwing out the figure - are there any sources other than randomers on macrumours for this figure ?

Good point. People could be traveling for a few different Apple products. Has anyone checked Rene Ritchie's Twitter feed?

From leaks it's fractionally bigger than the 15", probably comparable to the 2012-2015 era 15" machines. I.e. still a very compact and portable full sized laptop.
Yeah, that's not what they do though. Not sure how long you've followed Apple but they don't confirm nor deny rumors. That's not trolling, that's SOP.

  • What will it cost? Depends on config but maybe + $400 at an equivalent config
  • Base configuration still has 256GB SSD? Probably, unless they go for a $4k minimum config with 32GB, 1TB SSD, upgraded GPU, etc.
  • Will it replace the 15-inch? If the base config starts at a 6-core 256/16, probably right away at maybe $2,799 assuming low-end GPU
  • Will it have a scissor switch keyboard? That’s the rumor :)
  • Better key travel? Yes
  • Is going to have an HDMI &/or an SD card slot? Neither
  • 32 GB of RAM max or 64 GB of RAM max? Why not 64GB? Who knows maybe even 128GB :p
  • "XDR" branding for the LCD panel? No
  • Brighter display than the 15-inch? Marginally
  • Core i9 or mobile Xeon processors? i9, $2,999 if 8-core is minimum config.
  • 802.11ax (WiFi 6)? Probably not
  • Better webcam? Doubtful
  • Better speakers? Marginally
And on, and on...
My guesses above in red.
