Well, subscription price increases suck, but having alternatives such as Bitwarden, KeePass, or the Apple native Passwords app, who needs 1Password?

This is one of the reasons people are getting sick of subscriptions. They rise and rise their price… when you’re invested on their services.

I’m quite sure Apple’s Creator Studio bundle will creep up in price as well.

Remember, just say no to software rental.

I was long time 1Password user. I switched away when they went subscription. I wanted to move to Enpass but at time was expensive for 1 lifetime license so went to Bitwarden and then Enpass had sale I also brought it too. So I used both. It was before Apple Password. Now Apple password is here and I do use it but not same way as Enpass and Bitwarden. I keep them both updated and I don't really add anything apple password and it just add automatically. I do use apple password for 2 step verification though.

I didn't want rely on apple password only because if I get locked out of Apple ID for any reason then I lose access to all my password.

Thing about 1Password is that I don't feel like they are adding any features. Heck, they are not even fixing the old known issues. It's not even competitively priced either.

I have upstanding balance with 1P (from changing to personal) so I will stick with them till next year.

Long time 1Password user here (15 years, I think). I'm happy with the app across systems (I use MacOS, Windows and Android), however this price increase is very much testing my limit on what I'd wish to pay per year.

I've been using it from day one. Love it, but ... That's a massive increase. I love the app, but that's a bridge to far for me.

BTW I can't believe people are getting so bent out of shape by an incredibly tiny price increase. WTF? Is $1 a month really a thing?

It's a 37% increase (excluding taxes) in Europe, I would not call it "incredibly tiny".

Following your logic, they could increase the price by 1$ per month every year or every other year (or even by 30% every time, why not after all?) and it would be an incredibly tiny increase every time. Until it's not, I guess? Some people draw the line now, maybe you do it later if they keep increasing the price. It's all a matter of perspective.

People have a right to be pissed at such a sharp increase, especially when they are other (competitive) solutions on the market.

You love the app but $1.00 a month increase is too much?

When I received the email about the price increase, like everyone else, I was not happy about that. Then I thought about all the functionality I use and decided $1.00 per month was not worth the hassle of switching to one or more additional apps to achieve the same level of function I get from 1 Password.

If you are going to move to Apple Passwords ( I would if it could replicate what I get from 1Password) keep in mind the following:

You can switch logins/passwords fairly well, but it is not a perfect 1:1 migration.

Key Points:
  • 1Password CSV export is limited and mainly targets login/password-style entries (with notes field attached to those entries).
  • 1Password explicitly says CSV supports a limited set of fields and only exports Login and Password items. It also excludes custom fields and some other data.
  • Apple’s import path imports from a CSV file (or ZIP on iPhone), which means Apple is importing credential data, not full 1Password vault structure.
  • Passwords / usernames / websites → usually migrate fine
  • Some OTP (one-time password) codes → may migrate if they exist in the CSV-supported fields (1Password lists “One-time password” as a CSV field), but verify carefully after import
  • Secure Notes (standalone)will not migrate cleanly as standalone secure notes, because Apple Passwords does not have an equivalent standalone secure-note item type
  • Custom fields, security questions, backup codes, linked items, attachments/documents → likely not preserved in Apple Passwords CSV import flow (1Password says CSV does not include custom fields, linked items, etc.) This is a BIG one for me as I use these function heavily in 1Password.

Also, Apple's password app doesn't grant access to iCloud passwords from the CLI is a big missing feature for me.

I really don’t see what else 1password could do better. The app already does what I need it to do - generate and store passwords and other login details. I can view it on my Apple Watch, but they seem to have remove the ability to index and access passwords directly from spotlight, and people will pay a recurring fee out of inertia because they already have hundreds of passwords saved inside. They are practically printing free money at this point.

…or Keeper. I’m considering rolling this out at my company because 1Password has no strategic cybersecurity vision and Keeper offers a free family plan to every licensed user. Pretty nice perk.
FWIW, 1Password also offers a free family plan to licensed corporate users.

Switched 99% of my usage to Apple Passwords, but I still use 1Password for:
1. Storing credit card info securely, in a way that I can easily access for reference. What's the best way to do this without 1Password, encrypted/locked Notes?
2. Sharing passwords as a one-off, rather than creating a "Shared Group" in Passwords. Any good alternative here?
With number 1 that’s easy with Apple Keychain for free.

AgileBits knows that most of their remaining non business users are the ones that accept any price, more than 70% of their income comes from their business users anyway, so other users are basically a nuisance.
Where can I see stats of AgileBits' personal/business user share and income?

There is Apple Passwords. There is Proton Pass.

Why is 1Password still relevant anyway?
Despite the prices increase, I don't get these comments. They are huge in the business world and probably the best... so that's why they are relevant. They are also the most user friendly password manager out there.... my 78 year old mom has zero issues with it.

There's Ford and Chevy, why is Toyota relevant? There's The Weather Channel App, Apple Weather (free), so why is Carrot relevant?
Bitwarden is free, why are people paying the subscription?

Yeah and you get locked out of your Apple ID my daughter did, good luck. You want free, use Bitwarden, 100 times better than Apple Keychain.

My post from a little while back ☝️

For many people, probably not. The price increase can be afforded. However, it is the concept of value for money that 1Password are starting to push here, imo.

Value for money is very much a personal matter, what works for one person doesn't for another.

For myself, I'm going to continue using 1Password with the price increase because I'm so entrenched with it that migrating to another solution currently doesn't appeal, nor does learning to use another solution.

At the moment, once again for myself, the cost per year is still worth it to keep my security details safer knowing they all have unique, long passwords, OTP management is very simple, and I can easily access this data across all my devices.

But for everyone there will be a limit to how much they wish to pay before they start looking for alternative solutions. I'm sure 1Password thought hard before making this price change, I hope it allows them to remain competitive and viable as a business.

Just because it's free, doesn't mean people will use it. Apple Weather is free, and people pay for Carrot. There are cheaper cell phone plans than Verizon, why do people use Verizon?

Who likes increases at all? As a 1Password user, I knew it was going to happen, they been the same price for 10 years. Who hasn't raised their prices in the last 10 years?

I try other ones and they don't cut it. If my family is happy and use to using them, I am not going to spend all that time moving them to a new password manager and showing them how to use it.

I can’t imagine paying $4/month for something Apple offers for free. I get wanting a solution for people who use Windows computers, but for that price, just look up the password on your phone and type it on your PC.
If you all Apple and actually use Safari then yes Apple password is probably better financially but still not even close feature wise.

No one in my family is all Apple and never will be. In fact despite my push to Mac's I am the only one that still has a Mac. The other 4 people are Windows. Two of them are now Pixel users leaving the iPhone after years when iOS 26 dropped and their phones were old.

None of like Safari so Apple Passwords is a non-starter for us.

Agreed the best password app hands down. At work we use BitWarden enterprise, and while they do have a free version, it is clunky and there is no way my family would use it.

I have been with them since day one and have not found anything better, especially since I use multiple operating systems, so I am staying on board despite the price change. For me, 1Password is like the Dropbox of password managers and handles everything I store there quite well. 🤷‍♂️

Have you tried the KeePass compatible apps?

For something like 1Password I suggest Keeper or BitWarden.

But if you’re technically inclined nothing beats KeePass and self hosting. Just too bad main branch is Windows only. Strongbox is good on Mac.

Seems like every price increase I try to find something else and I'm never successful. Just checked keepass, Bitwarden, keeper. Bitwarden seems the most comparable and similar UI. Getting a lot closer to move to Bitwarden but not quite there for two reasons. No way to import attachments from 1password and really need an in app viewer for the attachments. I don't want to download the attachment to my device I just need to preview it. So close but not quite there. I'd also just stick with apple passwords and notes (does in app preview of attachments) but you cannot lock notes if a pdf is attached in notes. Bitwarden is also $10 if you need attachments but I'm ok with that. I can always host it locally and not pay that fee and if I need to migrate in the future Bitwarden is certainly better than trying to migrate from apple passwords and notes combination. So I am stuck for now unless anyone has any experience of another option that handles attachments well.
