I've noticed that in the iTunes/Mobile Application folder there can be multiple copies of an app. I don't think iTunes realized it's the same file just updated and when there is an update for an app it will show "x" amount of updates for "x" copies of that app in that folder.

Multiple copies of the app in the Mobile Applications folder isn't what's causing the problem with multiple update's showing for a single app. I'm getting that problem and I cleared out all the duplicate apps from the folder a day or so ago.

The app update feature hasn't worked properly from day one and it seems to be getting worse rather than better at the moment.

I am at home it backup was generally quicker here than at work. I did the sync before the update and it took about 12 minutes. I sync music, videos, apps and photos at home. Did the update and when complete did the sync again took about 73 seconds :) at work will be the test. not sure if mentioned but I was having an issue when I updated an app via the phone it still showed on itunes as needing to be done. I did the MLB app this evening before the update. Althought as I type sounds like that was an itunes issue as my backup sync did not show apps needing update so forget it. I though it was fixed with 2.0.1 anyway so far syncing much improved.

Solutions IS!!

Error 6 is normally because of the USB connector you are using. So if you aren't using the USB cord that came with the iPhone 3G, then I would suggest using that. If you are using the cord then I don;t know what it could be... Are you connecting through a USB hub? If so, then try a direct connection.

I had a bad USB connection, mine was the USB hub I used, I used a different USB hub and worked fine, it could also be the cable too. Please not that Apple recommends we use powered USB hubs.

Same, hasn't been an hour but its been about 20 minutes or so

Mine has been backing up for 40mins. I hope Apple will fix the whole "backing up" problem.

You can cancel that backup with the little X in the progress bar and it'll finish the rest of the sync like normal.

I an confirm all of these. It takes a good old long while for the touches to backup and canceling it seems to be the only remedy.

That my speaker is a tad louder, reception is great now! Used to have 2-3 bars on 3G at my house now have 4-5 :)!

Contacts doesn't lag, and the SLOW keyboard is now fast!!!! I was so irritated when i was typing faster than the phone! I had to wait at least a minute for it to get back on track. My first gen did the same thing! NOW ITS FIXED THANKS APPLE!:)

I got this, too. First do a complete Sync (don't update the software). Then with the phone still connected, run the update software. It should work (at least it did for me and I had the same error).

I had the same error and I did the same thing you did and it worked after the sync was completed.

Getting through contacts faster.
3G signal is better in my apartment. NJ
Text messaging keyboard is fast now.

I never had the problem of hour long back ups. Maybe 5-10 minutes it takes. I have about 4Gigs of my 8Gig used. With 4 apps on it.

1st gen iPhone. Just did the update and now my "locate me" button in the maps app does not work. I tried in Twinkle and WhereamI. They all just give me the spinning wheel.

DUDE!

mine doesnt seem to work either and i have full service. also it probably doesnt belong in here but it might be in the update but doesnt anyone know how to make groups in contacts it seems u can view the groups but u cannot make them so it just has all groups. whats the deal? and ok my location finally worked took longer than usual tho

FWIW, I tried to upgrad my iPhone to 2.0.1. The upgrade failed with error
code "6". So, I had to run the "restore" in iTunes. After all was restored,
firmware restored, backup restored, etc. and my iPhone rebooted it was
running firmware 2.0.1. Go figure.

I also hit error 6 and 9 during the update. I keep reading how people say that it is the USB cord, yet after 3 different USB cords, it still was not working. The only thing that saved me was doing a restore on my old xp computer, then once it hit the itunes + plug screen i moved it back to my main vista computer.

I think it will just blame vista on it lol....

Good luck to those of you that are trying to get back form a error 6 or 9 crash!

Okay here are a few tips for everyone with slow syncing times. Reboot your iPhone. Try to limit your apps to the ones you need. I went through my Apps I downloaded and put a hacksaw to them. Everything is much more fluid and snappier.

Another Update problem.

Couldn't install, couldn't back-up.

Error 13 here. Going to try to shorten the USB cord.

It better be, after a freaking 249 mb download! Those must have been some pretty big bugs! Soon we're all going to need fiber optic lines just to do updates.

It's a 249 MB download because it's the entire firmware that you are downloading, not patches to the existing firmware.

heh

Are Apple so stupid that they need telling that a two hour backup during which you can't use your iPhone is a major problem that they need to do something about?

If so, we are all doomed.

Yes, because my backups are just fine and snappy!!!

For the last time, 249mb is the ENTIRE system. It's not like they run a patcher and diff the entire filesystem with 249mb of changes. It's the same thing as restoring.

Sync only takes seconds for me... but the backup before it syncs literally takes an hour + on my phone. Until I disabled the auto backups that is. Now at least I can back up when I have time (at night? lol)

What is all the fuss about backup times??? My16GB has always taken just a few seconds -- and that's with 1500 songs, 7 videos, 500 photos, and a dozen apps. Why do some take so long? I don't get it.

BTW, for those of us still stuck on dialup this 250MB update will take a couple of days to download. )-:

You do know that when your phone backs up, it's not taking an image of your phone, hence it's not backing up your songs. It's only backing up the apps, the state of the device, SMS messages, etc. Emails are not even backed up either. :)
