Meh, I've always looked at bars as a guideline. I think too many people treat them as gospel.
There have been places where I've had reception with zero bars, and zero reception with a few bars.
backup seems better, no crashes yet
The long backup has definitely improved for me.
This may have already been said, but it seems that when the phone needs to do a complete backup it is still quite slow, but any subsequent backups are using a method that is detecting what has changed and so they're fairly quick (for me about 2-3 minutes).
Also, I haven't had a single crash after updating 9 apps directly on the phone, and then installing 2 more from the App Store iPhone app. These were "dangerous" actions for me before, often leading to the dreaded "stuck on Apple logo" iPhone (and subsequent 2 hour clean restore process)
This could just be the "release-quality" version that I'm hoping for!

Well, the update fubar'd it badly and I'm now restoring from backup, but the restore from backup has hung at about 90-95% of the way through.
Do I have options other than a complete wipe and start again, losing all SMS's etc?
(ps, I was wrong, this update somehow IS worse than 2.0!)

I can confirm this. I have gotten the laggy keyboard in SMS once so far. 2.0.1 does not fix this bug.
One thing I didn't notice is the drop in coverage some people are reporting.
I still get 4-5 bars of 3G in my house, and 5 bars on EDGE. No change that I am able to notice yet for me.
Don't worry too much about the bars thing on cell signals. It's more than offset by the inaccurate battery meter.
Thats good, I'm glad its not just me. It seems like its happening less often though, it used to be about 1/2 to 1/3 the times I went to text, now its more like 1/8 or so.
As far as reception goes, I can't comment on 3G (darn you ATT,) but my EDGE service is still five bars at my house.

Just did mine(took overall 20min) , I can confirm faster contacts (as in real fast) during e-mails w or w/o attachments and SMS as well! I noticed a couple lags here and there while composing,so that still needs some tweaking left to do.
Phone bars still the same for me 2-3, but I've got a "fortress" built like condo. Cell phones barely work inside my home, only T-Mobile & ATT with minimal bars.

Wow-- for me I went from having one bar or no bars of 3G to having 2-3 bars of 3G in my house.
I'm still restoring from backup. 3 hours and counting............
If you are having the situation I have had... it hangs but is really done and so I just force quit iTunes and my apps and data were there. Still have to sync up music and photos.
It's like it doesn't know when it is done.
This ONLY happened to me with 2.0.1 after I tried Restoring. My initial backup and sync took less than a minute.
Don't trust Restore yet.
I'd go back just a few pages, this was answered several times.
BTW, you DO care about Cydia/Jailbroken apps, without jailbreaking, you cannot unlock.
Mine has been backing up for the last hour or so and is only 2/3 done.
The issue with this backup speed seemed to relate to 3rd party apps. I wonder if the primary issue lies with those games with bigger footprints.
