I don't mean it shows you the key pressed, I mean in the form field itself it will show you the last plain text character entered. It sits like that for about 30 seconds and then goes to the password *.

Example

*****e and then thirty seconds later its ******.

This was introduced into the 2.0 upgrade.

hehe ya i know dude, it's a feature not a bug. They added it because as much as they claim the touch keypad is AMAZING people make a lot of errors when typing in passwords. So they added that so you can at least confirm you typed the last letter in correctly before pulling your hair that your password is wrong.

Yes you will loose everything!!!! My guess it because of DRM..... I have MobieMe so after I update at work I setup my MobileMe and all my contacts are back....... Its just like an iPod, you plug and Sync it will erase what's on there.

Sorry to give you the bad news. :-(

Huh?

I did a backup on my computer before doing the update, and all my content is still there (music, photos, contacts, etc).

However, I did this on the computer I have my iPhone "Married" to. LOL If he tries it on another computer, he may not have such luck. ;)

after reading all of this it seems to me that apple has not been doing much homework lately - lots of things seem to be going so rough

I just updated to 2.0.1 and now non of my non-apple apps work and my ipod mode is showing nothing. According to Itunes its all still there as I only have 500meg free on a 16GB 3G. Looks like I will have to restore YET AGAIN! Thanks Apple.

I am really starting to realize why I have been so anti-Apple since the Commodore days!

Sounds like you seem to have a mis-understanding of pwn and updates. Slow down my man.... it's just a bug fix. You're supposed to WAIT on those.

3G went from 1-2 bars (inside my house) to No Service. I'll have to try it put in other parts of town where I used to get 5 bars to see what I get now.

Edge is still 5 bars.

No more lag in Contacts or SMS.

Safari is "snappier."

Always had a fairly dismal 1 to 2 bars 3G at the house. After the update I get No Service. That's never happened. The opposite of what I hoped this update would be.

I would've killed for this capability on a Blackberry, or a Treo. In fact I think my last Treo did display the last character of a password when entered, just like the iPhone does now.

making mistakes on passwords is common not just on touch keyboards, but on all small PDA keypads. It's small. You're going to make more mistakes. that's the way it's going to be until we either evolve smaller fingers, or develop full sized holographic virtual keyboards.

Personally, I think it's dangerous. I know many people who type very slowly because they use one finger to type. All it takes is one person to look over their shoulder and find out what their password is. Heck, even typing quickly is like showing your password off to someone. I really hope Apple changes this.

Hmm. No problems here with the update. Maybe you should stop living in the past.

As for the last character appearing... wouldn't you notice someone looking over your shoulder?

Just updated to 2.0.1. Update went prtetty smooth. Safari is definitely faster. I just hope this doesn't crash and reboot as often.

Correct,
When I got my girlfriend her 3G and she needed to "restore" due to too many apps installed in a matter of minuets I plugged it into my laptop and she lost everything when I restored. From what I understand if you install an update on an iPod or iPhone iTunes will erase everything before the install.
Well, after a little research I found out that I'll be safe to do the update on another computer.

Is it snappier? ;)

I think the contacts are snappier. There is still a bit of a delay when typing, but not nearly as long as it used to be. I hope they continue to improve this.

One thing that would be hot is if you could hold down the home button for 4 seconds to bring up favorites (or ipod control whatever you have it set for) so you can easilly dial. I mean I understand they want you to unlock the phone before calling someone, BUT I highly doubt you're going to hold the home button down for 4 seconds if it's wedged in your pocket since the button is so recessed... but who knows. LOL

The next big question is if the iPhones still being built (not shipped) will be fitted with the new firmware, or would the update still be needed (like Windows XP before any service packs).

BL.
As soon as Apple can implement into their production/manufacturing process they will come as 2.01 [ n then the next version etc etc], but this always takes time. [ latest mbp's come w 10.5.2 dvd's (and pre-installed 10.5.2) but will be 10.5.4 as soon as they do another dvd run/ production upgarde]

omm :apple:

Huge difference for me. When I launch contacts it's instantly scrollable, opposed to a 15 second delay in the past. Backup also seems much faster. :D

Wow... It pains me so to say this, but reading this thread makes me wonder if Apple is so busy they have to subcontract programming work out to Microsoft these days...

I can understand 3rd party app issues, but this is WAY too many problems for a "bug fix".

C'mon Apple... you got the best products in the industry. Let's get some QC going here...
:(

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

I don't know what apple did to the 3G modem, but in my apartment, where I was averaging 300-500kbps on 3G, I'm consistently getting 1,100-1,200 Kbps. wiFi is definitey off and I tried inetworktest, dslreports, and testmyiphone.

Not sure yet if power management is somehow improved overall, but one significant determinant hasn't changed in 2.0.1: 'Location Services' appears to be left 'on' whenever engaged within an app. It would be really nice if apps can automatically turn it back off after using it given how much juice it consumes. Also, it would be nice to have some sort of 'GPS' indicator on the top bar (something along the lines of the WiFi and BT indicators) to know when it's engaged.

I was jailbroken with some niceties but this WAS worth the break.

I wish to express my satisfaction with this 0.0.1 update. Probably the most successful that the iPhone has seen since 1.0.1.

The contacts lag? Gone.
The SMS delay? Reduced from 10 seconds to 1 second.
The safari jump when inputting? History.

You'll still find letters to be slightly delayed if you try to input before page has loaded. On WiFi I am unable to register delayed character inputs!
