Well, 2.02 is a little piece of ****. It's messed my phone up. Asked me to restore, then couldn't, gave me 'iPhone could not be restored. Unknown Error 6'.

So I d/l'ed the spearate update (2.02) tried that, got same message but unknown error 5.

So now d/ling 2.01 see if that works. Thanks Apple for a wonderful update (did anyone notice is sarcasm there?).

Okay, I'm done having a hissy fit. Plugged my iPhone directly into my Mac and viola! (It was connected to a USB).

no differrnce, still less bars with 3G

everything's the same for me. had zero 3G before, zero 3G now.

great update.

edit: with 3G turned on before, it would go to EDGE quickly. now with 2.0.2, it takes a minute.

I have:

3bars on 3G
5bars on Edge

(same exact spot in my house, not moving iPhone)

god...the backup is taking FOREVVERRRRRR!!!

Yeah, as soon as mine is done, sometime in the next 40+ minutes, I'll be able to install the update that's already downloaded.

Just look at the this:

EDIT: Updated with 3rd time

Again: 3G is NOT the same network as EDGE. You are not necessarily supposed get the same reception on 3G as you do on EDGE. You are likely on different towers for 3G, which is why you are seeing 3 bars. That is a network issue, not a software issue.

i have read that the 3g frequency that is being used is a higher frequency than what the edge network is on...the higher the frequency, the less penetration that frequency has. basically the umts signal cant go as far and through as many walls as the edge signal can!

as far as my uprading goes, it took about 30 minutes max. (inculding backup). i have 2 pages of extra apps and an almost full iphone 8gb.

Update went fine, although once the update starting applying, it took a loooooong time to apply and verify. Not good for my nerves. I never **** myself when I update my Mac or my iPod Video like I do with this thing.

My homescreen just scrolled itself one pip to the right, all on it's own. That's just spooky. No wiggly icons on scrolling though.

So starts 100 million apps updates trailing in its wake:

Vicinity bombs back to the homescreen more often than not, and shows blank listing screens - like really blank - no grey dividing lines even.

TubeStatus just shows a 'updating' spinning gear until you switch off the phone and turn it back on again. Not a reset, just a power cycle.

Stanza works ok

My PhoneSabre is intact - how come others are losing theirs?

The rest are inconsequential. I'll get to those later. It's after midnight in the UK now.

Don't know about 3G, no coverage at home. Will have a look in the office tomorrow. Only one bar normally, so any improvement is an improvement.

Good luck, everyone.

Son of a! 2.0.2 update crashed my iPhone and I had to "restore" it (it went into recovery mode during the update!)...unfortunately I have no backups of my phone contacts, notes, and calendars and of course music so now I have to do it all over again! Thanks Apple!

And please don't say that I had to backup prior to the update, I just got the phone recently.

So far, so good on my end.

Haven't done much testing on it (contacts, sms, etc.) but the update downloaded, installed, restarted the phone and everything went fine. No issues.

Doing my wife's phone now (1g).

No problems with my update here. I just got an error when I tried to stop the phone from syncing. I replugged the phone in, let it sync completely, then clicked update, and it went fine. Didn't have to wait for a long backup or anything like that..

First thing I noticed: Phone seems a bit more snappy, especially with the home screen. Seems like I can switch pages alot more smoothly now.

I haven't noticed any change in 3G strength, but since I get 4-5 bars of 3G where I live I can't be an accurate source to tell you if they changed anything.

I'll post back later if I notice any drops in crashes with Safari

Phew! It looks like iTunes backed up everything except the media during the restore....am I lucky or is this the way it works? I know I know, it's RTFM time, but ....

Can anyone not connect to Gmail after the update? My other accounts are working, but I can't connect to either of my Gmail accounts.

My 3G problems seem to have been fixed after update. I can actually get on safari and YouTube now, which I previously could only access on EDGE. I have to use it a bit more to determine if the "dropped calls on 3G" issue has truly been resolved, but I'm very happy with the update at the moment :)

Just finished updating mine now. From the time I clicked the download button until the installation finished and the iPhone rebooted and reconnected with iTunes took about 20 minutes.

Now I will play with it a little and see if I notice anything different, I haven't really been having many problems so far, just some crashes from apps

You have to back it up prior to the update.

...

Well, you do! If you've spent that much time putting in all your contacts, notes, calendars, music and such, then you should've synced at LEAST once!

Do you write up a whole document at work without saving once, and then a throw a tantrum against the power company if a power outage wipes out your data? Things happen. Save your work!

Back to the topic at hand: updating now. Not really having any issues either, but we'll see what this does.

Just super...Click check for upgrade...iPhone syncs, does backup in 3 min. Downloads and WHAMO error 1602...for the second time in over a year and only during updates with 2.0.1 and now 2.0.2.

Took 1 hour 42 min to restore and install new update, restarts and the Restore window in iTunes pops AGAIN...So now I am on second restore since this update was released. Unable to tell the effects of the Classic yet CAUSE IT WANTS TO KEEP RESTORING!!!

Christ my windows software works better then this 2.0.x crap!!!:(

Consider this possibility: Apple updated nothing.
Can you say "placebo?"

Seriously - the idea that Apple releases something - anything - to make it appear they are "working on it" (even if Apple knows there is nothing they can fix with software) is not out of the realm of possibility. Reminds me of the ideas discussed in this excellent article.

Not saying there are no bug fixes here. Just saying it's possible this is merely a PR campaign. Stop the bleeding. Make people feel they (Apple) are on it (problems).

Just a thought.
Looking forward to updating when I get home this eve.
Hoping to return to that lightning-quick responsive OS all pre-2.0 users came to know, love & dare I say "expect."

Nice theory, but wholly wrong.

There IS a change with 2.0.2, but it's baseband only (RF). The rest of the software remains the same. You'll have to wait for 2.1 for that.

But considering the holy hell in the GeekPress was all about RF, it's no surprise that Apple would rush this puppy out first and worry about the software glitches in a later release.

Absolutely no difference here. Still slow as crap opening contacts etc. And still the Safari bug (as mentioned above in Wikipedia etc).

I've been lucky. I haven't had any problems with Safari nor going to Wikipedia. In fact, I'm on Wikipedia, right now, and I haven't downloaded the latest update. The issue w/ contacts has been resolved since the last update. I'm thankful that I haven't had the issues that I see people complaining about. I hope that these issues will eventually be resolved for those that have them.

I was just about to suggest this exact thought. Everybody always reports massive speed increases after an update, even though it's nothing more than the effect of a reset. I bet apple could do nothing more than bump the version number and people would report dozens of 'fixes'.

Personally, when I release code, my release notes are a bit more detailed....

I just downloaded the updated in less than 2 mins...I have roadrunner my connection is over 20 megs...My phone backuped completely in less than 8 mins....I have over 10 apps on it...and 120 songs..
