Yet... you still bought the phone... knowing of this "basic functionality" missing... or are you going to claim Apple lied to you?

Because even with a few features missing (Which I don't mind) the iPhone is vastly superior in ease, usability, function, interface, interaction, app capability, design... I could go on!

Now I'll say it yet again... All the features that people whine about like Copy/paste, MMS, Video capture, etc. will NOT arrive until 3.0. TRUST ME. That is what Apple will do coupled with new hardware, and the crowd will cheer and hail them once more. You'll all see soon enough!

Apple seriously went after the enterprise with 2.0, and I think that was a smart move. 3.0 will go after all the consumer features that have been lacking. I am excited for 3.0, yet I am sure there will still be some whiners out there that will find something missing.

Agreed. But there will be some people who got all 3 phones and they might be a little pissed off that apple waited so long.

At least can anyone confirm that Safari is more stable?
When I saw new update I was so excited but they only gave us 2..... nvm.

I don't really mind stability updates as far as they are there and not just a lame excuse to break jailbroken phones.

Any news if it fixes that bug in the Maps application where phones set to "UK English" had all distances displayed in km, rather than miles?

You seem to be ignorant that the United Kingdom completed its legal transition to SI units in 1995. Thus, using km rather than miles is correct (except for road signs ... somehow it's all a big mess).

SMS tones don't sound through the inbuilt speakers anymore when the earphones are plugged in. They only sound through the earphones.

Call/ring tones still sound through both the inbuilt speakers & the earphones.

Doesnt make sense if you leave the earphones jacked in, but miss the SMS tones.

My iPhone 3G froze during the "preparing iPhone" stage of the update process, with an empty status bar on the iPhone. I had to reset the iPhone by pressing the "home" and "on/off" buttons simultaneously. The iPhone then would not start, and I got a "recovery mode" error message when trying to re-connect it to iTunes. I had to restore the phone to the factory settings which obviously deleted all the data I had on it, all my settings, and all applications I had on it.

I hope I can restore the phone from the backup... but want to warn others who are trying to upgrade. My phone was not unlocked and did not have any problems whatsoever. I have no idea why this happened.

Guys be very careful with this new update.... i just try to update to 2.2.1 and then the iphone restarted itself.... and went stright into a "recovery mode" and i try to recover it a few times, turn my computer on and off, reboot my iphone and it still didnt work... until i use a windows base PC and restore it from there and it rebuild all the firmware and installed 2.2.1 and now im back onto my macbook pro and try to reinstall my backup onto my iphone and get everytthing back....

this is such a pain in the ****

To contrast that, the update worked perfectly well on my original iPhone that was jailbroken (not unlocked).

well i never jailbroken my iphone and i got the 3G version... at this monent its getting all my backup back onto the phone and it re-syncing it all back so its getting there so theres like 6GBs worth of data so it will take a while i can see it happening

Yeah, I had to go through the same process. Took a while but it's all back to normal ... well, except for the fact that all my icons are out of order. Apple needs to save that in the backup as well.

I think Apple need to test their firmware update before they post it up... there is something wrong with the actually update if there are a few peoples having problems with them.... i don't think this is a user error....

no, miles.

YOU use miles. BTW, for all the UK folks, we did not get the Euro, BUT THE OFFICIAL SYSTEM IS THE METRIC SYSTEM FOR ALL EUROPEAN COUNTRY, UK INCLUDED.
We still use both because there are people like you that do not know this.

Stop complaining, at least this is not a bug

Slightly crass comment, noting your final point, the fact that cars display mph, and that the population generally refers to distances in miles. Legalities be damned. Britain is an Imperial island! All those who have to use multiples of 10 digits to do their calculations for weight, distance, coinage (bring back LSD! though most of you will probably think that means a hallucinogenic drug rather than currency) and all other metric rubbish can stay on the otherside of the channel ;)

I didn't mean to imply it was a bug because it isn't. That is the process iTunes uses to update the firmware and get your data back on.

  • Download new firmware
  • Restore iPhone (format)
  • New firmware put on
  • Activate
  • Restore data from backup
  • Sync

I understand how the firmware update works. But the problem for the new firmware is that it actually fail during the second step.... and it then reboot the iphone and try to go stright to the third step.... anyway its doing the restore data from backup now anyway but i think that everyone should make sure that they have their backup before they do this new update

Well perhaps it's time to start using the international used SI system of kilometers ;-)

Yeah I will personally pop out and change all the road signs, and the speedo in my car.

Here is a better idea! Why don't apple simply undo what they have done since it used to display in miles. Or even better (which some might find a little bit out there!), provide the ability actually change it manually?!?

Not you should do that, but your government should do this and they should force car makers that every new car needs to use the SI system because this is what your country legally uses since 1995 as somebody pointed out.

It's not about decimalising anything, it's about using a standard system with some basis in nature rather than some entirely arbitrary system of measurement. Metric is still arbitrary, but it at least has more of a natural underpinning. People use miles because they're familiar with them, and it's more important for people to drive safely than to switch to the metric system. Give it 30 or so years, and people won't even remember what the mile is.

Does anybody else feel that this debate is over a decade old?

Fixes bug 5942704

The update appears to fix apple bug number 5942704, this one has been a serious pain in the butt for me. Worth the update.

What, you mean that bar of metal a meter long that's the SI standard metre was dug out of the ground at exactly that length? Wow, just.... wow.

It was recently made "law" (or the law removed, whichever way you want to look at it) that shops and the like are no longer forced to sell goods in metric units - they can sell in imperial again should they want to. And it's illegal for pubs to sell beer in metric units, as a Polish pub-owner found out when he tried to sell a half-litre of beer.

I'm pretty sure there have been moves to metricify our road network but the government have abandoned it on the grounds of cost and public objection.

Given that pre-2.2, the Maps app showed the units of measurement for travelling in the "correct" units, it would be nice if it was fixed. After all, it's what we're used to ;)

I think he meant this:
The original metre was based on being 1⁄10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the north pole drawn through Paris. Arbitrary… perhaps…

But at least some basis in nature. ;)
