I don't think we'll get push notifications until the new iPhone comes out this summer. This will allow Apple to upgrade the hardware in the iPhone and better support Push notifications. From the looks of it, I may be right. We'll probably see 2.3 in two months or so and it'll be the last firmwire before 3.0 this summer.

It's a mystery to me, too. It WAS working for my Yahoo mail, but it hasn't worked in months. It probably has something to do with the fact that the phone (or any phone for that matter) probably doesn't maintain a constant data connection with the cellular network, meaning the phone is not always visible on the data network. When it does spool up again to connect to data, it probably receives a different address, making push notification difficult. You'd almost HAVE to have some kind of active background service polling and updating the push-ing server with the phone's current IP. That's assuming they only use IP for mobile data networks. Mobile providers could be using some other protocol, but I think the principle would still the same. Without a more-or-less constant connection, the network wouldn't necessarily know where to send push packets.

But it WAS working!

My Yahoo! push has worked flawlessly since I signed up for it.

When I get an email on MobileMe... it's INSTANT. You know what else? I have push turned on and my battery life is EXACTLY THE SAME as with it off. Maybe the phone gets a non-data packet (like an SMS message) that tells the phone (hey, check for email... shhh...) and the phone then "fetches" the email and it looks and acts like push.

However, I'm not really sure why push is even an option on the iPod touch because those can only receive data when they are not locked and connected to wifi... Push notifications would be useless on them... they'd have to have background support.

I was hoping they'd fix the "third-party apps stop working" problem, so I could stop installing and deleting a free app to get them working again. To me, this is the most galling existing bug they have with the iPhone.

Oh well. Maybe next time.

What do you do to your iPhone? I've only ever had this problem ONCE (on firmware 2.0.0) and never seen it again since. All of my Apps always work fine.

Perhaps you shouldn't have installed iFart Mobile... :D

Internet Quit Responding

Ever since I updated last night to the new firmware, I no longer have internet connection through EDGE or 3G. The icon for 3G/EDGE also no longer appears in the top left besides AT&T either. I no its not my area because others at work who didnt update, still have internet and an icon in the top. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I think this update actually speeds up my iphone. My iphone after installing it runs so much smoother. Is that part of the fixes....?

Cut and Paste

I've been hoping for cut-and-paste for a while, but I've also noticed that most people who complain about that missing feature don't own an iPhone. Maybe because it's more of a neccessity on other phones? Seriously, I've only owned my phone for about four months and I've only needed cut-and-paste 3 times. Maybe it's because most uses for cut-and-paste are already built into the phone. That is, adding an email address, street address, or phone number to a new or existing contact, or going to a location on Google maps. The tight integration of apps (both pre-installed or on the App Store) virtually eliminates the need for cut-and-paste for me.

That said, I still hope we get it sooner rather than later...

Does anyone know if they fixed the WiFi/QOS problem with the touch in this firmware?

Safari really is more stable

So after a day of browning sites that guarantees a crash, you know like Gizmodo, Safari has not crashed once. Even when zooming in and out. So for this update, thumbs up for the Safari bug fixes. It's about time that Safari finally got its much needed stability fix. :)

Both the product of restoring your phone, I'm sure.

Give it a week and see if you're singing the same tune.

LOL... I think this is a real fix for Safari. I've tested it with the Giz site before the update with resets, restarts and as soon as you visit Giz and zoom in and out, boom! Crash, crash, crash. Not so this time. :)

lol it makes me laugh when people moan about having to wait for yellowsn0w or quick pwn to be updated to be able to take advantage of this update...

if you want apples updates as soon as they come out - DONT jailbrake your iPhone! Im sorry but if you jailbreak your phone then this excludes you from the right of moaning about new firmware!

I'm mostly worried that this update will break the Media Monkey Sync for me.

Can anyone who uses Media monkey confirm if it still works after the update PLEASE? (hate to go back to iTunes again)

thanks

I thought we were supposed to have push in september I'm REALLY ****ing annoyed that apple would promise something by a certain date and then delay it's release for so long. HOW HARD CAN IT ****ING BE TO GET AIM WORKING ON MY DAMNED PHONE.

Holy nerd.

As has been said many times already, most believe Apple is delaying so they don't have to go through the pain of releasing another lemon. We want them to do it right and that apparently takes time.

I will agree that they should be keeping their customers in the loop to an extent. Something as simple as "Sorry for the delay. We're working on it." would suffice.

Took 12 minutes to install and restart with new firmware, there has been some additions in the regional formats, havent seen formats like hindi, tamil etc in the previous version IIRC?

Overall happy with the update :)

Maybe an odd question but this has to do with sms.

Prior to 2.2.0 you could have it so that if you receive a sms message it would just say:

"New Text Received"

Without saying from who, or the first few lines of the text.

2.2.0 changed that so that it would at least say the name of the sender. Anyone who downloaded 2.2.1 know if they reversed it?

I want to maintain the option to unlock, but if they reversed it i'll go ahead and update.

Thanks!

Dude, they aren't going to change it back. Get over it. I happen to like seeing who texted me and what they said, it allows me to not have to actually go and look at the text if i don't need to! Lock your phone so if someone else picks it up, they can't see the text, keep it in your pocket, whatever. Sheesh, are you cheating on your wife or your significant other?

Do It

LOL probably because no one wants the job. Are you volunteering? It is a good idea

tb
That's actually a great idea.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way someone could take all the data from this thread and sum it up, and it would show at the top of the thread?

For example:
Netshare
3 reporting: works; 1 reporting: broken
frostyplace Emoji hack
5 reporting: works
yellowsnow
3 reporting: broken
clicked update button
12 reporting: clicked
preparing to click button
1 reporting: preparing
