my reseller is completely in the dark about when my display will be in. I can't wait any longer- but I have to keep telling myself I saved a couple hundred in tax by buying it out of state and having it shipped. Hurry up!!!

My monitor is in Hartford CT. As i am home (in CT not) from school that is a really good thing. It is scheduled to arive tommorrow some time in the day can't wait. All i will need now is the Dual 2.5 to power it up. Can't wait the switch will be complete in a few weeks or less.

I picked up one (the only one) 20" at the Barton Creek Apple store in Austin, TX. They said more were due in this week.

Funny story. I knew what I wanted so I just went to the back counter and asked for the 20" display and the guy went in the back to see if they had any. While he was in the back another customer came up and asked another sales person for the 20", keep in mind they only have one in stock. As the second salesperson was about to go into the stock room my salesperson came out with the 20". The other guy was furious and demanded to see a manager.

The manager came and the other cusomer started to throw a tempertanrum saying that he was promised they had the 20" in stock. The other customer said if you don't sell me this monitor I will no longer buy another Apple product again! He was casuing quite a scene.

I was about to tell the managerr just sell it to him. But I thought about it, I was there first. So I told the manager I was here first I have cash in hand and want to buy it. After all I did drive an hour up from San Antonio.

In the end I got the 20" displays and it's a work of art. I kept getting looks from people as I paraded through the mall with my new cinema display in hand. Every once in a while I would look back to make sure there was no avengeful mac fan stalking me!

Huh, what sort of looks were you getting?

It seems whenever I go to a mall people are always staring at each other. Can't stand it.

That's a nice monitor and I was considering it while waiting for Apple's Cinema upgrade. I think it's more like $1700. Where did you see $1499?
It's $1599 on HP site, that's with a 3 year warranty i heard it can be had for $1499 if you look around, it does not have firewire, but has 4 USB ports, PIP,Svideo component video, VGa and I think 2 DVI's, 3 year warranty, exact same specs as Apple, plus Height Adjustment, It looks like the best 23" value out, I could hook up the Xbox, cable Dvd, HDTV and everything to it, straight from the factory. I dont understand why it is so cheap, relatively speaking, I would just put an Apple logo on and smile, what are the downsides, Did Apple let HP do these in exchange for HP doing the Ipods? you may need IE to view the 3d demo

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/monitors/tft/l2335_specs.html if you don't care for some dumb 360 thing and want to use a REAL browser like Safari. Yeah, it's nice and all but I'd still say the Cinema Display is better looking, has less bevel on the edges. True, it's a couple hundred more for the CD but I'd rather have the Firewire ports.

I would even rather have the Apple 20" CD before I would stoop to a 23" HP piece of Doo Doo!

what about viewing angles? the aluminum enclosure to complement the g5? firewire is more important to most mac users than usb 2.0, too. what about it being VESA complient? do you really like plastic (not even clear plastic!) over aluminum. ok, i'll admit, i didn't really read the 23" HP article, but these are the questions i think some of us are asking. :)

I agree. After taking a look at the product, it just doesn't hold a candle to the Apple Cinema Display. They were designed to compliment each other.

I am not knocking mac, just take a fair look at the product and links, these are supposedly the exact A Quality 23" panels Apple and sony get from the same panel maker, but pivoting, you give up firewire, but get lower cost and 3 year warranty and a ton of interface options, it is vesa compliant and dosent need an adapter like Apple, if you call it doodoo, and it has the same specs as Apple's 23" you are also calling Apple's DooDoo too.
I was just a lil excited cause I never seen a 23" for less then are Apple Brand. It say carbon silver, not sure if thats aluminum or plastic. The Bezel looks about as thin as Apple's except at the button, because of all the inputs and 10 menu buttons. I am pretty sure someone will come out , etc. viewsonic may have one now that I think about it.with an input box that will give Apple svideo PIP HDcomponent video dual computer hook up.
I think Apple's looks better too, But I would be lying if I didnt say I like the price, input, pivoting, height adjustment, and 3 year warranty.
Oh well enough from me I jus thought I would post it, hope I didnt get anyone mad.

HP and APPLE 23" owners actually debate the two on the latter pages, lots of good info on LCDS in general.

but thing about it, at least for those true mac heads, would you really want an HP logo staring back to you next to your beautiful g5?

20 vs 23

asides from size between the 23 and 20 incher, is there a big difference in quality? what does it mean that the 23 incher is HD? is that the same HDTV? does it provide the same level of quality as HDTV?

thanks in advance

you know, i was thinking the exact same thing! i was debating whether or not it's worth to spend the extra 730 (edu discount; 1169 vs 1899) to buy the 23". it's annoying, given the not too distant future i'm planning on buying a g5 and whether or not the extra space (+3") will be worth it for my dv editing and game play. anybody have any advice for the both of us? :)

hi weezer, i'm in a similar position.

factors i'm considering:
the 50% price over the 20" er. (in the uk at any rate, it's half as much again to buy the 23")
the higher resolution may make it more difficult to run games natively in the future on the 23 compared to the slightly lower 20.
The resolution means icons etc are smaller on the 23 than the 20 <i think!)
Ghosting on the 23 compared to the 20.

Now i'm in it for music etc <not DV>, and given the prices, i think i'd rather buy the 20 now and maybe add a second one later. The only thing that really makes me think twice is the extra real estate for watching dvds that the 23" would provide...

Both displays are approximately 100 pixels per inch. Icons, etc., would be the same size on both. Both displays have pixel refresh of 16 ms so ghosting, if any, would be the same on both. Otherwise, your reasoning sounds valid. :)

The extra 3" means that the icons will be the same size. Hence a 20" is smaller and can only do 1650 res while the 23" has more screen to work with so 1920 res will look the same, you just have more space (no squinting needed). According to apple, and from my own expirience this last weekend when I looked up close at the new displays. The new 23" does not ghost, I was running movies and annimation, moving it around, I could detect no signs of ghosting. Maybe there is a difference in games, but from my personal expirience I thought the 23 was great!

Now, I am in the same boat, 20" or 23"? Is it worth the extra money? After going to the apple store I just can't say no, the extra screen size to me alone seems like enough of a reason to pay the $$. I had photoshop open on both the 23" and the 20" and the extra space is just amazing. You could always get a dual display setup for the same price as the 23" but then you don't get the un-interupted screen realistate. To me I guess the 23" offers the supreme comfortable feel.

I guess in the end it comes down to what you will be doing on it. I do tons of photoshop work, and having used a dual screen setup the past 4 years I really really like to utilize my screen space. I plan to get a 23" and hopefully I can eventually afford a second 23" display... man oh man, can you imagine?

I think I will quit now. It's almost 11 pm here, and I wanna go home :)

Sorry if the pics are not of real pro-quality, I only have an old cheap camera, and the lighting in the room wasn't all that gr8. (Besides that, I have no talent :p )

Still, was a lot of fun. Hope you guys enjoyed the pics.
Thanks for the pics!

BTW, my wife hates you! ;)

Has anybody taken shipment of the 23 inch, so far all I have seen are the 20's. BTW has anyone else noticed how massive the 20's look in real-life pictures vs. the apple web site where its in the shadow of the 30? I thought that that 23 would be just the right size but after seeing the 20 in the flesh (or at least pictures)...I might need a bigger desk for my deuce-trey! :D

Evan
Funny you say this.

When I got my 22 inch, I thought it looked small in the store.

...at home it is huge!

Now I am thinking of a new G5 with 30 inch, or dual 23s.

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

I am sitting here in front of the beautiful glow of a 23 inch Cinema HD display...and its pixel perfect in every way. Sooooooo sexy! Its really just uber-sleek.
I hate you! :D

On a serious note, how much brighter does this new one appear than the old version?

TIA,

Sushi

The new 23" is bright.

Having the brightness at 100% hurts my eyes for a few seconds... I'm comfortable having it set about 50% (from system preferences).

I have the old 20" here at work, and it is brighter than the old 23... and it doesnt even come close to the new 23"...

Just a subjective observation.
