Had My 23'' since Friday

Went to Portland Mac from Seattle on Friday 7/16 and picked up a new G5 and 23'' display. I was the first one out the door and the guy behind me bought the second (out of four) They said they had just gotten in the 20'' that day, but I am SO happy I got the 23" -- it is VERY sweet. I'm no pro, but it looks great so who cares!!

23" displays are beautiful!

Simply magnificent. A very nice upgrade from the EOL'd 23". 20" looks a little small to me compared to the old version of the 20", though this must be due to the thinner bezel.

Looks like the 23" is the way for me!

I picked up one (the only one) 20" at the Barton Creek Apple store in Austin, TX. They said more were due in this week.

Funny story. I knew what I wanted so I just went to the back counter and asked for the 20" display and the guy went in the back to see if they had any. While he was in the back another customer came up and asked another sales person for the 20", keep in mind they only have one in stock. As the second salesperson was about to go into the stock room my salesperson came out with the 20". The other guy was furious and demanded to see a manager.

The manager came and the other cusomer started to throw a tempertanrum saying that he was promised they had the 20" in stock. The other customer said if you don't sell me this monitor I will no longer buy another Apple product again! He was casuing quite a scene.

I was about to tell the managerr just sell it to him. But I thought about it, I was there first. So I told the manager I was here first I have cash in hand and want to buy it. After all I did drive an hour up from San Antonio.

In the end I got the 20" displays and it's a work of art. I kept getting looks from people as I paraded through the mall with my new cinema display in hand. Every once in a while I would look back to make sure there was no avengeful mac fan stalking me!

I made the trek from S.A. to Barton Creek on Sunday too! I was going to pick up a 20", but they said they had sold it earlier that day. Did you get yours on Sunday? If so, you snaked me. :D Just kidding, nice grab, they are awesome monitors!! At least I did not go home empty handed, I purchased some ear buds for my ipod. :p Just for the record, I was not the guy throwing a hissy fit either.

This is taking the thread a little off topic, but Nospleen in your travels to the Austin Apple Store, did you happen to catch any Airport Express in stock. I have one on order but it is not scheduled to ship till 8/9 and I'm getting a little anxious, and I've been hearing that Apple stores have begun recieving stock. So I was thinking of making a trip from SA to Austin to pick me up one of them. But if you have no information I'll probably call before I take the journey.

They did not have any in stock at that time. I put my name on a list and they called me the next day and they had them. But, they could only hold it until the end of the day and they could not ship either, so I told them to sell it. My order is suppose to be here tomorrow. I am starting to doubt that I will use it though. Email me and maybe we can meet up and you can take mine. (it will be sealed.) emsdad@mac.com

The new 23" is bright.

Having the brightness at 100% hurts my eyes for a few seconds... I'm comfortable having it set about 50% (from system preferences).

I have the old 20" here at work, and it is brighter than the old 23... and it doesnt even come close to the new 23"...

Just a subjective observation.
Wow...Thanks!

Looking forward to seeing them in person.

After reading every message in this nine page thread, I didn't come across even one post about dead pixels. I take it they're all perfect. :) I heard too many dead pixel stories on the prior displays and I certainly hope that isn't the case with these. In the keynote, Jobs said these displays are so good that their competitors use the ones Apple reject.

Good point!

I am so happy that my 22 inch has a perfect display. Some didn't as I understand. At the original price of $4,000, I would think that they were all perfect. I was lucky and got mine new for $2,000. Still works great.

However, the new ones are sure enticing -- especially the 23!

23" Display Pre-Order

So what does it really mean to pre-order one of these monitors? I pre-ordered mine 4 days after they were announced and now a week after they have supposedly started shipping, I still do not have it and the status of my order remains open. Yet people are able to walk into an Apple Store today and walk right back out with a new monitor in hand. What is the point of having pre-ordered it if the product isn't made available to those who have pre-ordered it first?

This is the first product I have ever pre-ordered from Apple and I think it will be my last. I'm really not in a huge hurry to get it, but I'm not understanding Apple's logic on this.

Same here with pre-order

mickhyperion I'm in the same situation, originally the UK site did not claim that the displays were shipping so I assumed that the shipment was US only. The following day the images and text were changed on Apple UK site to say that the 2 smaller displays are now shipping.
A week later and my order is still open with the same useless on or before 26/7/04 ship date and no attempt at crediting my card, so no sign of my display.
From all this I have to assume that Apple Retail stores are the only places they are shipping the displays to.

Sucks

I'm in the same boat. But what was/is strange is 12 days ago I saw the apple pending on my credit card, then two days later it disappeared. Very strange. I sent them an email yesterday so hopefully I'll find out what's up today.

I'm in no hurry either but fail to understand why when I ordered one day after release that my display has not been shipped.

I ordered my display 1 minute after the apple store came up the day they were announced. It was shipped monday and I received mine yesterday (thank you 1 day fedex). Apple says they are shipping in the order received... I suspect there were lots of orders placed in the first 4 days. Also note the apple store still says '2-4 weeks' for the shipping time on new orders.

Yet people are able to walk into an Apple Store today and walk right back out with a new monitor in hand. What is the point of having pre-ordered it if the product isn't made available to those who have pre-ordered it first?

So apple shipped monitors to their own retail stores, the ones near my house got some just late last week - but at the time they received mostly demo units (gotta have something to show off) and very few stock.

Your characterisation that people are just walking off the street and getting the display they want isn't entirely correct - I believe if you called all the apple stores, none would have any stock. A few lucky people who were in the right place at the right time (and post here :) is my assessment.

PS: Here is a picture of my display on my desk

Everybody orders from apple the same way. You are inm direct competition with retail purchacing from the apple store, and if they got their order in for a few thousand a piece, and you are after them, they win. Obviously they have precidence and it seems apple has been fufilling most preorders before that of retailers or distributers, but its all about timing.

Correct me if I'm wrong cause I'm a newb, but the 23" HP L2335 can easily be hooked to your HDTV Cable box, HD Receiver, HD Tivo or Xbox and the Apple Cinema Display cannot hook up to any of these?? I was set on the Apple, but if that's the case, that's a major blow! When paying that much money for a HD monitor, I would love to be able to watch HDTV.

You are right, but the HP display is not solid, it is plasticy, doesn't have a firewire hub, it's not clean. I will spend the extra money to get a solid aluminum display, with a very thin bezel, etc. Even if I can't run TV on it (that's not my main goal anyway). For some, they might feel different, guess it's all about user preference.

yeah that seems to be the ultimate downside to the HP...I finally saw the new Apple Cinema Displays in person and wow oh wow it's almost too beautiful to pass up. What's the possibility that some sort of adaptor or attachment will be sold so you could plug in a HD Cable box or whatnot?

My understanding is that HD converter boxes that come from the cable company have Firewire and, in theory, you can plug them into your Mac, I know to record the signal so, in theory, to play it too. I've had too many beers tonight to make sense of this to you but here's an article that explains it MacOShints.com for us. Pretty damn cool!

No offense or anything, but this is exactly why Apple has 3% marketshare. There recent offerings almost always put form over function. No doubt Apples monitor is better put together and an aluminum casing is nice, but honestly what are you going to do with your monitor that you need an aluminum case!? Plastic is cheap, yes, but if you look around, practicaly everything is made of plastic! They make stinkin fire proof boxes for documents that last 30 minutes in a fire out of plastic. I'd like to have the Apple Display just as much as the next guy... but I'm also just as middle class as the next guy and will most likely be getting the HP over the Apple.

As for the bezel, its almost identical in size. I think only the bottom where the buttons are is bigger than the Apple.

Also, if the Apple is of such high quality, why dont they put thier money where there mouth is is offer the same 3 year warranty as the HP?

This is not an anger filled post. Its a mere discussion. Now lets discuss....

I happen to see a 30" HP Display on Monday evening. The amount of viewing area was awesome.

Yesterday my wife and I visited the Chestnut Hill Apple Store. They had the 20" & 23" on display. Very impressed by the look, a very solid display.

Display

Apples new displays look nice, no doubt. But like other people have said, when comparing it to other displays like the HP L2335, Apple's features don't match up. The funny thing is, if the Apple displays had the TV input capabilities and the HP L2335 didn't, all the die hard mac fans would be saying that is why Apple's are better, but because its the other way around, people say they don't care about the lack of features when comparing the monitors. I think having TV capabilites would really justify spending that much for an LCD monitor. I'm not saying that Apples displays are overpriced, but it would certainly open the market up a lot for mainstream consumers to buy them. People would rationalize the cost by saying, "well, by buying this I am essentially also getting a very high quality TV as well." I understand that pro's appreciate these monitors and probably don't have very much desire for TV included, but for apple to be profitable with these displays, don't they need to sell them to more people than just pro's?

Since we're discussing this, here's my take.

The 23" Apple Cinema display is a professional solution.

If you want something that slices, dices, and chops there are things on the market available for purchase that will fit your needs. Why do you need the Apple product to be what it is and everything else you want it to be?

Having said all this, there are products already available (such as eyetv) that will allow you to watch tv in SD or HD on this display. So I don't really understand what the issue is?

Is it 'I want everything and cheap too'?
