props

not a Giants fan, but props to them for pulling off a tough win on the road against a very good Philadelphia team.

and it looks like both Tampa and Carolina are in for a long, long year...

My lord, how much money did the 'Skins pay for offensive upgrades (both players and coaches) and all we get is:
1st down: Run
2nd down: Run
3rd & long: Pass
4th down: Punt

The D (just like the last two years) kept us in the game as best they could, but the O just couldn't get anything going.

They should just take their lumps and play Campbell now. They aren't going to go anywhere with Brunell.

Manning's bringing the Giants back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter speaks well for this team and their early season conditioning. I liked his performance against the Colts, too. He's coming along.

I have to throw out a "Go Bears" for this week. Two games, 7 points allowed, 60 points scored.

I'm pleased so far, although they have yet to play what I would consider a decent team. Minnesota will be a bigger test next week, especially at Minneapolis. I think they've got some good talent, and the O line is giving Grossman time to make some nice throws.

Still a few question marks, but I see them winning at least one playoff game this year.

I always liked Grossman. He was really good in college but just can't seem to stay healthy. Hopefully he has used up all of his injury bad-karma and will get to play for a while.

Culpepper is starting to look a lot like, well, Culpepper.

I agree. Baring any type of injury I don't really see them slowing down. They have one of the top D's in the league, if not the top. Their passing game is taking advantage of the opposing teams trying to stop the running game. Sooner or later I'm sure we'll see the defenses stepping back of the line a little bit, but they proved last year they can have one of the top running games in league. I'm really liking their chances to reach the Super Bowl this year.

if they were smart, the Bears would put together a trade package for Oakland WR Jerry Porter. 'Da Bears still have a few question marks at receiver, and Porter would be a big upgrade (in terms of ability/experience) over anything they have on the current roster. Just my opinion...

having said that, the Bears look good. Granted, they put a whuppin' on two teams that have a ways to go before they can be called competitive, but winning the ones you're supposed to win is a good thing.

They don't really need someone like Jerry Porter. He would ruin whatever they've got going for them. It's great enough that the offense has finally gotten some life. We're all pretty damn excited here in Chicago.

I understand what you're saying...he kinda looks like a T.O./Randy Moss/Keyshawn kinda guy, though I think it's more of a clash of personalities between him and Art Shell. IIRC he'd always been a good soldier before.

Of course, I may well be biased by the fact that he's a former Mountaineer, like me ;)

you're prolly right though. Really, what I've heard is that the Bears could use a TE more than anything.

Umm the lion gave superbowl losers the seahawks troubles in week one and a few of people had / have them in the playoffs.

Jerry Porter is better / more talent than anyone on the staff? I don't think so Mushin Muhammad needed the chemistry and better arm back there ... he has both more talent and experience (how many 15 td seasons does porter have?). Bernard Berrian has more talent and speed than porter, less reliability and experience but he's looking like a stud in the #2 spot ... so now we're shopping for a #3 and so far Rasheed Davis / Mark Bradley should be good enough for that spot.

The bears are also finally using their tight ends properly and its paying off! There are probably 3-5 more receiving threats on the field on any given down which I guarantee will throw off defenses all season. Oh yeah if that doesn't work we can hand the ball off to a 1300 yard rusher or a #4 pick ... its not all doom and gloom in bears offense land if things stay like this.

The question was the quarterback and so far it looks like rex can do the job well.

I thought that was a major problem coming into this season but so far

Three TD's to the TE's so far

Agreed, I like Brunell but he's getting too old. He doesn't have another starting year left in him so presumably next year Campbell will start and the team will have to go thru growing pains w/a young QB. So it's reasonable to think that '08 could be the first year of stability assuming Campbell does well and there are no big player or coach changes. The 'Skins are making the right improvements, but they are having trouble coordinating the improvements so they can actually mesh together. If Campbell woulda started last year we probably wouldn't have gotten to the playoffs, but we'd be in a better position for this season and next season (assuming Campbell doesn't suck of course).

Muhammad's 33 and is more of a slot/possession guy. He's not a breakaway threat anymore, and his best ball is probably behind him. He's still solid, but not special. Bradley is coming off an ACL tear, and Berrian remains an unknown. My point is that Porter could step in and be an upgrade at the position...he's got more skills than Muhammad, and he's got more experience than either Berrian or Bradley.

Wow! I just turned on the game with only 2:00 left only to watch the Jacksonville interception. Game, set, match. Goodnight, Steelers. Waa happened?

Steelers got whupped...but good. Whew. Jacksonville just shut 'em down. Bummer. :(

they said before the game that Roethlisberger had a 104º temperature...that can't be right, can it? Anyway, he wasn't feeling well. I can't blame the loss on him, but you have to wonder if he was missing reads, etc...

If I recall, that's the first NFL defending champion to be shutout in the following season. And a 9-0 game sure couldn't have helped Monday night ratings.

yea, it was a dud game, that's for sure. It was 0-0 at the half...yawn.

Then he shouldn't have played. With the padding round the middle and a possible temperature, he should have sat out. Batch didn't do that bad a job last week after all!

Still... much better fantasy week this week. Thank you Terry Glenn whose TD proved the winning margin in each league! ;) And TO for breaking his finger!

Lots of blowouts this week and was most impressed by my Niners' progress... They actually look like an NFL team now as opposed to a bunch of random overpaid guys off the street. Was sitting on Sunday night looking up flights... if I don't come out to SF to see em, it will be the first time since 1997 that I haven't.

Actually, it's the third. The Squeelers have taken it on the chin twice (separate seasons), and the '81 Raiduhs had 3 shut-outs against them the following season. If I remember the post-game graphic correctly.

That's the second mind-numblingly boring Steelers game I've had the misfortune to sit through.
Thank goodness for Civ4:Warlords and my laptop.

Here's the SI article with those stats, back in the 80's: "It also was the fifth time the defending Super Bowl champions have been shut out; the 1980 Steelers were blanked once, and the 1981 Raiders were shut out three times." Not a good welcome back sign for Roethlisberger & Co.

Notes from MNF

Some thoughts from watching MNF (last night was my first, was out of town last week)...

* What does it take to get some intelligent commentating? There's got to be people out there with some knowledge of the game and ability to speak that can do a better job. Tony Kornheiser, or whatever his name is. He says something like, "Roethlisberger still sharp," then two plays later, he says Roethlisberger is not the same. He also actually stated, on a key play, that the Steelers receiver hadn't made the catch because his butt hadn't hit the ground. Even though both feet were down. (Cowher should've challenged that play, by the way.)

* What is up with the visual of appendicitis? I'm in medicine, so it didn't bother me, but I can't imagine what it was like for the uninitiated while wolfing down a pizza, to see a picture of intestines and hear words like "rupture"

* Sideline reporters weren't bad, perhaps they should be calling the game instead?

* What's with the highlight films shown over-contrasted with some sort of vivid color scheme? I'd like to see the picture clearly, thank you.

* That poor player returning the punt... what was his name, Owens? I watched it in slo-mo HD. Ran into his own player, then got hit, and tackled. I counted 4 separate incidents on the one play where his neck was snapped like a pinball.

* If this keeps up, MNF and Sunday Night Football are going to switch in terms of "The Big Game".

I kind of thought this had happened already. And I've gotta gives props to NBC. Their Sunday night coverage is, truthfully, a lot better than Fox or ESPN. Though I do like Kornheiser. Theismann is a blockhead. Mike Tirico? What happened to Mike Patrick? I liked him...

it goes without saying that CBS coverage is freakin' terrible.

I agree about the MNF/SNF deal - definitely feel Sunday Night is the better game from an announcer point of view. Perhaps MNF will improve, but I'm not a fan of the current staff for the Monday game.

Of course, a 9-0 sleeper didn't help.
