Roy Keane has gotten Djibril Cisse on loan from Marseille. He was injury-prone at Liverpool (bad luck more than anything), but seems a useful signing should he stay healthy.

Sunderland look to have really improved their team over the summer, I can see them having a better finish this year. Roy Keane seems to know his business.

To generalise wildly - on the whole, I don't like Scots. Seeing how much respect they paid to the Northern Irish national anthem didn't really help to make me change my mind.
I know there are always a number narrow-minded individuals who'll do it, but that didn't seem a minority to me.

I'm just glad that we English have never been embarrassed by the behaviour of a sub-set of our 'support'.

Oh, hang on.

Yeah, that is a WILD generalisation. What's that got to do with anything being discussed here? Have I overlooked something, or are you just randomly criticising Scottish folk?

FWIW, criticising God Save The Queen is not exactly something inherently Scottish. There are plenty of English folk who may not agree with the Monarchy.

That being said, I consider it bad manners for anyone to audibly boo another country's national anthem regardless of political belief.

Yeah, it's not my aim to sway the thread or anything by saying that, btw.

I just don't agree with booing national anthems at all, it makes me cringe with embarrassment when I hear it at our matches, and just cringe when it's others'.

That's a shocking statement to make.

Please let me know when my nation agrees with your personal approval. I'm sorry, I don't mean to provoke a reaction but I spent much of my childhood in Dorset and Hampshire, the people are lovely, the countryside spectacular (in particular the A31 at Stoney Cross looks incredibly like Scotland!) and I've never encountered prejudice like this.

I know there are always a number narrow-minded individuals who'll do it, but that didn't seem a minority to me.
Be careful you don't become a narrow-minded individual.

I don't agree with booing national anthems myself, but I believe it may be because some of the lyrics are anti-Scottish?
Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God save the King/Queen

I just don't agree with booing national anthems at all, it makes me cringe with embarrassment when I hear it at our matches, and just cringe when it's others'.
Glad to hear this just isn't a Scottish problem, maybe we could learn to live with each others imperfections?

BTW, just watching the match just now, can't believe the ref sent off Ryan McGivern in a friendly. It may be a harsh lesson for the youngster but it was unnecessary.

To be fair, that particular verse hasn't been used for a long time. Looking it up on Wikipedia (for what it's worth) it seems that the verse was (perhaps unofficially) added in the 1740s but fell out of use soon after.

Anyway, back to the football. In the absence of the England match being on accessible telly I watched the Wales game to lend my support to Messrs Myhill and Ricketts, with the Welsh commentary on for a fully immersive match experience. Our neighbours lost 2-1 to Georgia unfortunately, after a poor second half.

Anyone see the England - Czech Republic friendly?

Wow. The football gods must pity England, that was THE most undeserved draw I've ever seen. Capello must have had to change his pants after that last-gasp equaliser by J. Cole - one of the scrappiest goals ever scored.

I thought England were woeful - if it wasn't already obvious, you could see that this team had no business in the Euros. Gerrard and Beckham were supposed to be left and right wingers, respectively, but I saw Wes Brown attacking up the right more than Beckham, who spent a lot of time in the middle and on the left, while Gerrard was roaming way upfield in the center a bit too much. Brown and Terry were beaten on the CR's first goal. James fumbled one shot and got beaten on that sneaky break up the left in the second half, with the Czech player rounding James and missing on a tight angle strike. Barry had a couple clumsy fouls, Hesky looked rusty and I thought the czech defense read Defoe very well. England looked bereft of attacking ideas.

I thought Lampard was pretty quiet overall, and the crowd booed him off when he was substituted. It was quiet at Wembly - you could hear the Czech fans chanting. Other than playing out of position, Gerrard had an OK game, with some decent passes and runs. He tried to power a few of his trademark long-range shots in with no luck, but perhaps should have held the ball up instead to put sustained pressure on the CR defense

The Czechs, on the other hand, looked pretty organized and completed a bunch of passes in the run up to their first goal. The second goal was an absolute peach - bent in just like...Jankulovski. They forced England to shoot from a distance, which rarely troubled Cech.

Once again, England can only score from set pieces. Credit to Wes Brown, he did well to put the ball in the back of the net...no disrespect to Cole but anybody in Wembly could have scored his goal. In this form I would think an Italy or Spain would simply take England apart. Not sold on Capello's England yet. It was raining at Wembly but Capello was careful not to bring an umbrella. ;)

What's the point of changing manager and then play the same system and the same players, of course the result is going to be the same.

I really think Team England needs to start from scratch, both on and off the field.

Did you get it on USAian telly then, your Lordship? It was on Setanta here which we don't have a subscription for, so I had to make do with the radio (after my flirtation with Welsh commentary). it certainly didn't sound pretty.

For one thing, I'm a little unclear why a few more of our youngsters weren't tested in this match – in particular, I'd have liked to have seen Gabriel Agbonlahor and Theo Walcott given a run out.

Yeah, it was on the Fox Soccer Channel here in the UK. They show some of the Premier League games too. ESPN has Champions League.

Have to wait a few more weeks before they show their first Hull City game.

Indeed, in fact I don't think it was ever official. I just think it's one of those things that people (like me) use to try and justify something that in the scheme of things isn't that important. Quite happy to drop it all and talk about football, and I'll gladly buy Mr Brianstorm91 a pint next time I'm in the Queens Head in Burley.

In the absence of the England match being on accessible telly
but before we do, I got Satanvision for free when I threatened to leave Virgin and go to Sky. Ironic isn't it that I couldn't watch the Scotland match (on Sky), and thankfully (from the sounds of it) I didn't watch the England match!

Ah... we're looking into getting some tickets for the Arsenal game, so if I'm successful look out for me in teh shirt™ celebrating our famous victory in the crowd. :D

JC, because of you and this MR thread I started looking out for Hull City results from last season and I was happy to see them promoted. I hope they survive this season, and I wish them luck in every game this season except for the 2 against Wigan.

Aw, bless. Thanks. The Latics have done fantastically well to retain their Premier League status, it's been said by our manager and chairman that Wigan are one of the clubs we really want to emulate in this regard.

Incidentally, what are your thoughts on Marlon King's move across the Pennines?

I always thought that he and Heskey were too similar, so they never really formed a good partnership at Wigan. He's useful and will create a but of havoc in the opposition box. Not a prolific goal scorer though.

Yeah, the fact that Wigan not only got promoted but have survived is a shock to me. I thought last year was their weakest squad since they got promoted, as they sold a bunch of players and didn't really replace them. But Bruce came in and saved us, and he brought in some useful players. We have two genuinely top quality players in midfield (Palacios and Valencia) and this egyptian striker he brought in looks pretty useful so far.

I totally agree - I would have had him in rather than Hesky or Defoe. We needed more threat up front. Ashton and Agbonlahor accounted for 5 goals last weekend...Ashton is hurt of course but on current form how does Agbonlahor not get the call?

Like Swiftaw says, we get most (all?) England international matches on Fox Soccer Channel. As for Premier League matches, We had three on saturday and three on Sunday, all live - usually (but not always) whatever games the big four are playing for sure. The other matches don;t show up for weeks, some not at all.

Steve Bruce performed a miracle last season, but this season is going to be just as tough. It seems like Most people are tipping one of the promoted clubs to stay up, but Fulham, Bolton and Wigan are still all being mentioned as likely for the drop. I think Wigan can stay up, but I suspect that the relegation battle could be quite tight this season.

By the way swiftaw, I just checked and Setanta is broadcasting the Hull v. Fulham match tomorrow. I don't have Setanta, unfortunately. :(

LORDBLACKADDER - rebroadcasting Hull V Fulham? you had me going there....

AUGUST 3OTH Serie A football live on ESPN36O !

LOL! me too. so much so that i now recognize dean windass on site!!

That's easy - look for the oldest, fattest man on the pitch! :D

I agree though, Jaffa's enthusiasm for Hull City has spilled over and I wish them the best this season.

Yes, obviously the Hull match is a rebroadcast - last time I checked the premier league didn't do rematches! ;)

Well, England may have looked flat in today's friendly, but the USA just won a World Cup 2010 match away to Guatemala 1-0. :)

Very, very physical match, unfortunately the Guatemalans resorted to some truly dirty play at times. Their number 11 midfielder Ramirez had a couple of dives that would make any Italian blush. One in particular saw Ramirez fling himself on the ground in extreme agony after fingertip contact from Clint Dempsey - both players got carded but Dempsey was hard done by, as the English say. Guatemala defender Gustavo sent a horrific late, flying elbow into the face of midfielder Eddie Lewis, opening up Lewis' scalp (blood everywhere) and earning Gustavo a sending off. Guatemala forward Carlos Ruiz slid a boot into Tim Howard's face, and Howard got carded for his response...USA's Steve Cherundolo picked up two yellows for stupid fouls, so both teams played the last half hour with 10 men.

But justice prevailed when Carlos Bocanegra headed in a corner. The last 25 minutes were nervy but we held on for the win.

Whenever the US national team goes to South America the match takes on the tone of a heated derby...very hostile territory indeed.

Our first win in Guatemala since 1988, and I think it shows that Bob Bradley is taking the national team in the right direction, and 2010 has the potential to be one of the USA's best World Cup campaigns ever.
