The other thing today highlighted was how you can go squandering chances – Wigan only had five shots on target, yet ended up with five goals on the scoreboard. Clinical finishing is a must.

Oh, and by the way MOTD – I realise that as part of the BBC's remit you have to give mention to minority sports, but there's no need to carp on about rugby league when we're on, okay? :p

Frazier Campbell might solve that problem. But did you notice "Dean Windass making his Premiership debut"?! Do Bradford and Boro' not count???

Yeah, I thought that as well. To be fair, he did play for those two teams back in the very, very early days of football, not long after Sky invented the game in the mid-nineties. Maybe memories at the BBC have got a bit hazy in the intervening years?

Meanwhile, I'm a bit worried about too much expectation being placed on Campbell's shoulders should this transfer actually happen. We've past history of players impressing on loan then not faring as well once the move is made permanent, but hopefully he can do well for us.

Well, look at the bright side Jaffa - none of the pundits were giving Hull City 4 points out of 9 after the first three games, so things could certainly be worse. And to be fair to Wigan, they are proving so far to be a better side than anyone predicted.

Over here in the USA, we are top of the league! Columbus beat Dallas tonight to top the table by two points over New England...I'm beginning to look forward to the playoffs. As long as we keep our starters healthy, things look good for the Columbus Crew.

Hurrah! The required reaction if you're top of the league is to 'stand up'. And then sit down again after you've told everyone.

Indeed. Just as our first two results didn't mean that we'd be playing Champions League football next season, the result against Wigan hasn't relegated us. We've had far, far bleaker days than yesterday...

I've got Champ Man 01-02 and Windass is in our team then. Venables bought him when we almost got relegated again.

I can't see Frazier Campbell leaving Manchester United in any shape or form.

Carlisle managed a 4-1 win against Yeovil yesterday without actually turning up at all. We were the worst I've seen since, well, Millwall away at the end of last season. We lost 3-0 there and managed to win 4-1 yesterday. Yeovil will struggle if they can't beat a team who play that poorly.

Rather disappointingly mind, only 6200 there, which I'm not happy about. Thats 1000 less than last seasons average and 3000 less than the average gate we were getting in the conference. I don't understand.

Dour barely begins to describe the first half of the Liverpool-Aston Villa match...both teams are defending well but playing a very cautious game.

Worryingly, Torres is off after just 25 minutes or so, not sure what the problem is.:(

Benitez has Keane playing too deep on the left, and even after Torres left he stayed there for a bit. Torres replaced with David Ngog - I would have brought in Babel - who looks pretty decent all the same.

We need to win this game and prove we don't need Gerrard/Torres.

Im just surprised how Cautious Liverpool are playing. Villa have improved over the last season but come on!We shouldn't be scaring you this much.

Really This is quite similar to last seasons match but this time no Gerrard to pull off something tremendous :D

Crap, crap football. Boring. Negative. Memo to Rafa - you won't win any silverware with a strikeforce of Ngog and Benayoun. Liverpool looked pretty toothless in attack...a few good touches by Keane, Alonso and Kuyt but Ngog had an anonymous second half.

Stone-cold penalty not given when Reo-Coker came nowhere near the ball while tackling Keane in the box. Mystified that Benitez kept Babel on the bench and took Keane off.

Villa were the better team over 90 minutes, but both sides were clearly more concerned about not lsing than trying to break the deadlock.

Benitez better figure out how to score goals without Gerrard and Torres, because if Torres has done his hamstring we'll be up a creek. Hopefully El Nino was removed merely as a precaution.

I listened to the commentary on the radio and it sounded like a terrible match. I think I'll give MOTD2 a miss tonight.

I'm in the unusual position of saying that the MLS game I saw last night was clearly superior to the Premier League game I just finished watching.

While Villa is a good side and were playing at home, Liverpool need to remember that draws, not losses, are what killed their league hopes last year. We need thee points in games like this - we used to be one of the big four, remember?

Blimey. Fulham's Jimmy Bullard has been named in the latest England squad for the qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia. Still no room for Deano, though.

I'd be shocked if he gets anywhere near actually playing though. However, I think this is a great call up. I loved him when he was with the latics and he always plays with passion.

Edit: Unless, of course, the plan is to play some of the fringe players against Andorra to save some of the regular players for the Croatia game.

Metaphorically, or?
:D

He's pretty decent. Theo is in there again too.
I'm glad to see Walcott in the side and hopefully he'll get a game, but still no Agbonlahor...

Meanwhile, we're proving our Premier League credentials tonight by signing a young foreign player no one's heard of. Guinean defender Kamil Zayatte joins on a season long loan from the amusingly named Swiss outfit Young Boys, apparently with an option for us to buy him if he doesn't balls it all up.

I'm really glad to see Jimmy Bullard in the England squad. He's a quality player, and if Lampard and Gerrard can't perform for England, why shouldn't he get a chance?

I'm actually looking forward to watching England, which I haven't done for a lot of years.

On a side note, today is my favorite day of the football year. Yep, it's transfer deadline day. What a day as well. Thankfully the BBC are putting my money to good use (FWIW, they can throw as much of my money at the BBC Sport website as they like, it's brilliant) and have a bloke blogging on it all day, which I will no doubt have in a tab open in Safari all day.

Quality first day of my holiday. Now, if only I can get my FML issues sorted...

Yep, transfer deadline day is brilliant. I'll be sat with a beer and a bag of Wotsits glued to Sky Sports News tonight. Ace. :p

By the way, on the subject of Football Manager... details of FM09 (new features and stuff) are going to be officially announced tomorrow, which is rather exciting.

Glad of Spurs so far, aside from them it's been rather quiet. However, it always is until after tea.

Yeah, I saw that about FM09 as well. Very good. Though I thought it was Wednesday? Meh, either way... Hurrah!

It appears that the days biggest transfer has taken place at The Eastlands:

Auntie said:
A Middle-East company claims to have completed a takeover of Premier League side Manchester City.

Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development (ADUG) says it has bought the club from Thaksin Shinawatra.

"The investment services and development in Abu Dhabi has successfully completed the huge takeover," its statement read.
