Bernie still doesn't want F1 shown in HD, something to do with the cars looking stretched on the screen. Now the BBC has a HDTV channel already then I expect they will show it in HD next year so most other places should get it too.

Bernie's plain wrong, or has incompetent techies doing the FOM coverage.

However, I think FOM have actually got a clue because coverage has been consistently good since they took over - the G-force and rev counter graphics are good examples. If FOM can provide an HD feed, I imagine the Beeb will show it. It's a good USP.

I'm not sure about the Beeb and F1. CF cricket with Auntie and then with Channel 4 - their coverage was immeasurably better with Hawkeye etc. I quite enjoyed F1 on ITV - I don't mind the ads and James Allen isn't that annoying, plus Louise Goodman and Ted Kravitz undoubtedly know what they're talking about.

A counterpoint to that is the BBC's Wimbledon coverage which is simply awesome. If the BBC but half as much effort into F1 coverage then it'll be great. Holly Samos would be a great Goodman replacement with a much better interview technique! And, as last week's F1 coverage showed, Ted couldn't tell a set of scrubbed tyres from his elbow :)

According to Sky News, Richard Hammond is potentially being lined up. Someone that has previously confessed to knowing nothing about F1. Perfect.

Eek. Didn't he at one point on Top Gear say that he actually didn't like F1 at all?

Probably a case of Sky News being a bit wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. Much as a like the Hamster, unless he's secretly been an F1 fan forever I can't see it being a good idea :)

indeed! i think we need to start a campaign to get him out of retirement!! :D

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him commentate on a few races per year (possibly the British GP and some nearby European races) or presenting some special features. But the schedule and sheer amount of travelling and time away from home to cover a whole season would most likely be a bit much for Murray. He's not getting any younger :)

Not just Sky.

It gets far, far worse...

The Times said:
Coverage will be influenced by the success of the Jeremy Clarkson-fronted Top Gear when the five-year deal begins next year

The Times said:
Bernie was very impressed with the Top Gear proposition and there will be cross-fertilisation between the show and the races.

The Times said:
Clarkson and James May, Hammond’s co-conspirators, will also join in the grand prix fun.

I think when Hammond drive the Renault f1 car he gained a lot of respect for F1 drivers and maybe gained some interest in the sport. Also Clarkson does like his F1.

At the end of the day who would you rather have presenting F1, Steve Rider or the top gear presenters?

but have they ever raced for season, raced anything.

Hammond's raced in a 24hr 2CV race, a Rover SD in an historic touring car race, and their BMW 330D in the Britcar 24 hrs. He's also driven an FRenault, Renault World Series, and Renault F1 car. May and Clarkson both contended the Britcar 24hrs with Hammond - and they didn't do too bad - my other half and I went to Silverstone to see the end of the race.

I'm not sure that TG + F1 is the best idea. SOME features cross over could be a laugh, but to be honest - anything would be better than James Allen. Ebola would be better than James Allen. I'm prepared to see what the BBC's plans formerly are, and see them in action, before passing judgement. I LOVE F1, and I LOVE Top Gear. But I also love Bacon and Ice Cream. Will they work together? Not so sure. Lets see what happens first before passing judgement on broadcasting that hasn't even happened yet. Hammond as the anchor, Clarkson interviewing drivers, May doing historical articles - it could work, but I don't think a full TG-into-F1 thing is what the BBC is planning.

good point about bacon and ice cream.

you proved my point for me, they have not done an entire season (not one race) of any form of racing. completing a 24 hour race is something, but an entire season is much longer than that

Ditto 4 of the 6 ITV regulars. Of the two that have, one adds 4/5ths of 7/8ths of f-all to the broadcasts. I'd really like to see Brundle retained, but the rest - some I want to see the back of, some I don't care either way. We don't really know what the BBC is planning yet - I think we need to hurry up and wait to see what they're ACUALLY planning ( from the horses mouth ) rather than criticizing decisions we don't really know the BBC have made, or what such coverage might actually be like.

You've got..

Not Racing Drivers
James Allen ( has to go )
Steve Ryder ( likes motorsport, but not important )
Louise Goodman (not bad, but can be patronising to drivers)
Ted Kravitz (some reports good, but replaceable)

Racing Drivers
Mark Blundell ( racing driver, utterly dreadful )
Martin Brundle ( racing driver, utterly irreplaceable )

4 of the 6 are not racing drivers, and of those that are, one is useless. My point being, racing driver != good commentator.

did you watch it?
how is the track?
more importantly how is ferrari?

It maybe because he struggles to speak coherent english.

Quali about to start with the threat of rain towards the end of the session, should be good.

nice, good qualifying session.

spoiler
1. massa 2. kimi

Or contribute anything of value to the ITV broadcasts at all. He was a good racing driver, but he's not a good broadcaster. Not sure why benlangdon and Pachyderm seem to have a problem with that. Don't get me wrong, he's not registering on my hate-o-meter like James 'the cock' Allen, but he's certainly not someone I'd want to see retained by the BBC.

"Renault say it'll be here in 7 minutes".

a little unfair seeing as there were 6 other cars cruising round the circuit at the same speeds

i'm sure alonso won't have taken too long thinking about protesting against his former team, but obviously wouldn't dream about protesting against a team he wants to join next year

edit - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=z3_GjtJ9SIY

looks like they were at fault, hamilton realised his error and moved over though it looks like
