looks like they were at fault, hamilton realised his error and moved over though it looks like

He shouldn't have been on the racing line, that was the problem.

But there was no other option than to punish them given the rule, as they did impede both drivers, intentional or not.

It's such a silly rule, (though easily rectified by enforcing that your slowing down lap should be within a % of your quickest lap) though I was under the impression that cruising back at such a slow speed after your hot lap had now been banned?

Seems a bit harsh but will have to see how it compares in future races

Do feel that the race stewards will be very busy people

ridiculous ferrari 1-2 tomorrow then it seems

We already knew that, the penalty doesn't affect Ferrari in the slightest as they'd already spanked McLaren in qualifying. ;) :D

It was by far a greater infraction than Alonso on Massa at Monza 2006 for example, that was fringe.

But Hamilton shouldn't have been tootling around on the racing line, if he'd have stayed off line then there wouldn't have been a problem.

It's quite simple to fix, on your cooling down lap, if that lap is not within 107% of your fastest lap, you lose it. Simple.

nope still legal i think, it's just you have to make sure you don't impede drivers on a hot lap...

if the weather is wet tomorrow, these penalties won't affect matters too much, the mclarens will come right back into it and hamiltons apparent poor setup won't hinder him too much

i'm sure button is hoping for a downpour as well

You know, if HK hadn't have been there, then LH wouldn't have been any sort of impediment at all and probably wouldn't have got a penalty. But, to be honest, they should all have been on the other side anyway.

Two things are clear imho.

1) They need a rule for the slowing down laps ( or just change this crap qualifying format ) - 110% or something.

2) They need to standardize punishment for qualifying back-marker issues. Just about every possible punishment has been seen for this. 5 places, 10 places, take away fastest lap, take away two fastest laps, back of the grid - everything. For each rule break, there should be a specific response.

I hope we get SOME rain tomorrow. Start dry, turn wet..it'd be brilliant.

nice i got my wish. :D

its on at 11;30 tonight right?
i dunno my cox cable has been poopy lately and will not let me see ahead and i looked on the speed channel and its ridiculous

I think what happened today can not be considered to be the drivers fault (although they do have mirrors). McLaren have the most advanced system in F1 for predicting when other cars are on the track (well thats what they want us to believe) so all they needed was a quick, "OK lads, get off the racing line there are still two quick cars out there". The other cars on the slow-down lap did the same so there is no excuse for them.

What they could do is place the parc ferme at the end of the pit lane so the drivers can pull in there after the chequered flag (like they do in Spa) and get rid of this problem.

ya i agree
i was thinking why don't they have a service road going around the track but its unfeasible to make one for the whole track

for the penalty on the defense of mclaren, those cars are fast and i bet could barely been seen in there mirrors.

I think what we saw today was a typical arrogance by McLaren. I knew a few people who left there because they didn't like the way the team managers acted and their attitude. They where told to always act as if they where winning, always act as if they where better than everyone else. One of the silly things they did was ensure they got the front seats on any plane where other teams would also be traveling. They where also told that they had to be the first people on the plane and make sure they where in the que for the plane ahead of any other team.

So today was typical arrogance by McLaren and they don't give a toss about any other teams.

there did look to be quite a few cars around when heidfeld tried to get past, surprised it was just the McLaren driver who was given the penalty.

You Tube clip

Sorry for the double post, but the reason why the two McLaren cars where penalised was they where on the racing line, whilst the other, Kubica and someone else, where off the racing line. If you watch the on-board shots you see how Heifeld had to swerve around the two McLarens. It was a very avoidable incident for them.

thats not arrogance that is a psychological thing

read any racing book and it says that as long as you know and they know you will get 1st no one is going to get 1st place or challenge you because they think it unobtainable

doing all those little extra things just make the team look like it is super organized, which does help

its just making everyone on the team think they are winners and is going to win which makes everyone work harder

I agree that there is a lot to be said about professionalism are the winning mentality, but I think it can be taken too far, and from what people say who have worked at Woking, it is not a nice place to work at times. I have heard stories of McLaren employees being reprimanded for holding the door open for an opposition team member (I don't know how much truth there is in this but I can easily imagine it).

haa yaa thats ...

when i race my friends at go karts i always saw so im feeling good you guys ready to loose, and just stuff like that. it just gets in the oppositions head.

pretty much you have to be a big ball buster to keep that mentality through the years

Oh yeah, you have to play the game as it where and try and out-psych you opponents, but the way McLaren do things just shows a lack of respect for your opponents more than anything else.

I can't stop thinking 'what if it were two ferrari's instead of mclarens'...

would they get the same treatment?

I know exactly what you are saying, but as the blocking was so blatant they would have been penalised. Just look at Schumi in Monaco '06. I thought that was harsh at the time and todays offense was far more obvious.

was that the one were he appeared to stop or slightly nudge the barriers on the final corner of the final lap blocking the whole track.

Cant remember if it was him but I remember it happening and was the most blatant block ive ever seen. They were punished thankfully.

when was that?
was that when he ran into the back of someone on a yellow flag with the pace car

Think McLaren will be glad when this weekend is over. Hamilton's first pitstop took nearly 20 seconds.

So it was an easy win for Raikkonen, just wish he'd learn to smile. What ever happened to the days of F1 drivers having a personality ???

he is just like chuck liddle
the icemen
ha, the guys that are ice are less likely to be affected by down or ups
although shuey did do a nice podium

massa :(
kimi :/
=
:) not :D

Well that was a dull race! What happened last weekend?

Ferrari where hopeless and Lewis Hamilton the best thing ever.

Now McLaren are poor and Kimi good!

This is what really annoys me with British press, when Hamilton driver a competent race (which is all Australia was) then he is the greatest ever, and now when Kimi does just as good job they won't go over the top about him. I think today we have seen the true reflection of the championship this season. Kimi will walk it and McLaren will fight with BMW for the scraps.

Australia is a poor circuit to have the first race of the season. It is an old fashioned point and squirt circuit which is more dependent upon engine and brakes, whilst most modern circuits are more flowing and will suit the more aerodynamically efficient Ferrari.
