Don't worry, we are going to lose to Stanford this weekend. Gerhardt is going to kill us. Next year and two years from now is when we're going to be dangerous.

You think? I'm not convinced. I think USC's defense is going to be up for the challenge after getting embarrassed in Eugene.

It's the offense that I'm worried about. Barkley will be a great QB, but he has a LOT of growing up to do (meaning honing his talent).

A MWC with Boise and Fresno would be awesome. Those are the two teams that would make the most sense, of course.

I have a question for those "in the know". When a team is a part of a conference does that team hold any contract with that conference? I mean, could Boise State and Fresno State just jump ship like that and abandon the WAC?

I would assume there has to be something there that protects conferences from teams jumping like that?

From a fan perspective it would be weird going to a new conference. Heh. I've watched these teams play for so many years it would be weird to play all new teams. Well, except for TCU being as they were WAC members for a couple of seasons earlier in the decade.

On a related note, I was reading up on the history of the WAC about a week ago and was very surprised to see that the WAC was once a powerhouse (and a pre-BCS BCS) conference. BYU is in the MWC, but when they won their National Championship they were in the WAC.

Did you know the Fiesta Bowl was originally created for the WAC?

My how the mighty have fallen...

And once again I won't be able to watch TCU vs. Utah because of the stinkin' lack of a TV contract. I don't even have Versus anymore, so I'm stuck watching it on www.justin.tv

Lame...

I'm certainly not 'in the know,' but I have read that if the announcement were to take place, Boise, Fresno, etc. would have to carry out a full season before they could leave. I guess like a two week's notice of sorts.

The game is carried by CBS (but not their main station). CBS-C or something like that. You might have the channel and not know it.

I think this picture sums up what's going to happen at the Utah v TCU game:

I wouldn't say I'm "in the know" but I do know a lot of political jockeying had to be done in the state legislature here in Texas when Texas, A&M, Tech and Baylor blew up the SWC to form the Big 12 with the old Big 8 members. The story goes that Texas was going to split for the Pac 10 or Big 10 and A&M was going to go to the SEC, but the governor and lt. governor at the time were both Baylor alumni and some powerful Tech alumni threatened to cut the two schools' funding if they left the others twisting in the wind. Hence, the Big 12 was formed and schools like Houston and TCU got left out while Baylor and Tech got included.

I'm not sure about whether or not Arkansas had to pay anything to the SWC, but they really left for the SEC without much trouble. Ditto with TCU, who is on their third conference since the breakup of the SWC.

I still don't really like the Big 12. I just don't have any connection with the schools in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa. It's cool to play Nebraska because they are a "traditional power" in football (ditto w/ KU in hoops) and it's nice to go up to Boulder every four years for a game/vacation, but otherwise I have no connection with those schools.

I don't think they have to pay anything to leave. I don't recall hearing about Virginia Tech, Miami, and B.C. paying huge amounts of money when they left the Big East for the ACC. It would be interesting to see what chain reaction BSU and others moving to the MWC would have. After the Big East to ACC jump for those schools, there was a domino effect in other conferences. USF, Louisville, and Cinci joined the Big East, and there was more shakeup in C-USA. The Big East managed to keep their automatic BCS berth and TV contracts after those teams left, so I don't think the effects would be that bad. I do wonder how the WAC would fair without their marquee schools, though.

BYU was a charter member of the WAC, as was Arizona and Arizona State, so the Fiesta Bowl wasn't that big of a stretch. The interesting thing is that BYU won their national championship in the Holiday Bowl, of all places, not the Fiesta Bowl.

Dude i've been attending SC's practices this week and the team looks really good and ready to go. Carroll has made some key changes on defense, like moving Kennard to the LB position. Gerhart will be hard to stop but what most people forget is that Stanford has no D, they can score with Gerhart, but they have a tough time containing other teams.

McCoy is back for this game and so is Havili which is good news for our offense.

The Holiday bowl was the where the champion of the WAC was contracted to play. The fact that #1-ranked BYU was forced to go to the Holiday Bowl (not even a New Year's Day game) and play 6-5 Michigan was one of the big reasons for changes to the bowl system that eventually led to the BCS.

It's going to be like Oregon/Stanford last week: a very high scoring game. Whoever scores most, wins; which ever defense makes just a handful of key stops will have a big advantage. I think USC's defense is a little better suited to slow down Stanford's running game than Oregon's or ASU's because the Trojans have some big, strong guys on the DL. Other defenses that are built more for speed just got plowed through by Gerhart and the Stanford OL.

Of course, if you focus too much on stopping Gerhart, Andrew Luck will beat you in the air. Best Stanford QB since Elway.

I watched Stanford play ASU two weeks ago, then I watched USC play ASU last weekend. ASU has a very, very good defense, but Stanford shredded them with ease on the ground and in the air, whereas USC really struggled.

Actually, I think the thing that really won the game for Stanford against Oregon was the special teams. Oregon outgained Stanford on the day, but that's because Stanford's special teams constantly gave Stanford's offense excellent field position to work with while keeping Oregon's offense pinned back deep in their own territory. Hold on tight when Chris Owusu gets the ball, he can break off a kick return at any time.

Yeah i agree with you, Luck is a really good quarterback and has picked apart a lot of defenses with ease. But he hasn't faced a speedy D like SC's thus far. I'm hoping we bring the pressure early and move up our secondary's and force Luck to go long. SC's D has looked suspect in last few games, I'm hoping we can turn that around against Stanford, otherwise, it'll be a long day for SC.

Damian Williams is out for the game so that blows for SC, but Barkely will have Havili and McCoy back.

I think USC takes care of Stanford this weekend without too much trouble. Should be a good game.

You don't think UO and ASU have speedy defenses? Their problem was they didn't have enough muscle at the DL to deal with Gerhart and the Stanford OL. USC looks like they have a stronger DL, so it will be interesting to see how the battle at the LOS fares.

Luck hasn't been sacked much at all this season - something like only five or six times. Oregon got him once last week, for a two yard loss. Stanford's OL is exceeding expectations and Luck is very mobile, actually a fairly dangerous runner.

Actually, I think SC wins this one because they're playing at home. Stanford's two breakout games were played at home. They haven't proven yet they can win the big one on the road, but they have a much better chance at it than I ever would have imagined at the start of the season.

Wow - Baylor is putting together a nice drive here. I think our defense forgot it had a game to play today.

EDIT: Nevermind. :)

Holy heck!

First, Ole Miss opens up a big can of whoop ass on Tennessee, ( lovely, brought tears to my eyes! Can't wait to hear what clever things Lane has to say about being bitch slapped by Houston Nutt).

Then Stanford opens an even BIGGER can on USC! ( May even make USC fall out of the top 10 in the polls, but probably not given the press's love affair with them )

Gators survive, again. Still undefeated, but definitely not impressive. Offense still has no identity, no rhythm. I really don't think they can pull it off to the National Championship, but I stay hopeful.

I guess Stanford didn't have much problem with USC's defense after all. :D

And Stanford's D even made big plays.

I expected them to have a good shot at winning, but not exactly to lay an epic beatdown on the Trojans like they did. 55 points. @ SC. Wow.

Me either. Looks like are serious cracks in the foundation at USC. Worst loss of Pete's time there and I think something like the most points scored against them ever?

Plainly, we suck this year. We're going to lose another game in the regular season and we'll lose our bowl game. We have the worst team in Pete Carroll's tenure. There are those on campus who call for his firing and I'm not sure I don't disagree with them. He's a great recruiter, but when you have the top recruits in the country at every single position and can't win games against teams who are elated to get one or two four-star recruits, there's something wrong with the coaching. www.firepetecarroll.com may be for sale now, but I expect someone to buy it rather quickly. He's doing a terrible job given the talent we have.

dsnort, you have no reason to bag on USC's placement in the polls. Aren't you an Ohio State fan? The team that continually sucks year after year playing in the softie Big-10 but constantly gets placed into big games that they keep on losing? We may suck this year but at least we have 7 Pac-10 championships in a row and three victories out of the last four Rose Bowl's to show for it.

His first year wasn't all gumdrops and candycanes.

Please do. It will be the single worst firing in the history of sports. USC would be a laughingstock if they fired one of the most successful coaches in all of college football. Who do you think would possibly want the job after a guy with seven straight conference championships and two national titles was fired? No one, that's who.

Don't be retarded. The fact that someone follows Team A doesn't preclude them from having a logical argument about Team B. Everyone—regardless of who they root for—has a reason to bag on USC's placement in the polls because they've lost too much to be ranked as highly as they are.

Nope, Gator fan here. (Yeah, I know. We're kind of over hyped too.)

Fire Pete Carroll? Hmm, I think I'd have to give him one or two bad years considering what he's been able to do with the program.
