That has not been big news really around were I live here in Texas as the entire mess with the firing of Coach Leach from Texas Tech.
That and a lot of the things that are coming out like the email Dallas morning news got there hands on. Those email show that the higher up at Texas Tech had been planning this firing for over a year. Mix this with the law suit Leach filed is making it intersting around here. I really hope Leach take Tech to the cleaners over the stunt they pulled. I may be from Texas Tech but what Hance pulled is just another one of his growing list of things showing how bad the man really is. The chancellor needs to go and paying out 12.3 mil for an wrongful termination of the coach I think will go a long way to getting him kick out.

I haven't heard that rumor. Sounds like you've retracted. I listened to the entire press conference today at work. 15 mins or so of solid, positive talk from the coach. Strangest, but good, resignation press conference ever. It was more like a pep rally with the you're all great, we're great, the university is great, listing out all the great players and team achievements and then...peace out, Seattle here I come.

I didn't "retract" so much as admit that I was screwing with our resident Texas fan.

As for Petey's press conference, you can feel as good about it as you want, but in the end it's still him leaving after getting the program in trouble. Not good.

Also, looks like former Marshall DC/interim HC Rick Minter is interviewing for both the Texas A&M and Mississippi State DC jobs. You can have him, steve2112. I want Justin Wilcox or Tim DeRuyter.

Hmm, I don't know much about him. I'll have to do some checking up on him. I find it interesting how many coaches don't cut it as a head coach, but make good coordinators. Of course, the hits keep on coming. I saw yesterday that our D-Line coach is also leaving, and heading to Kentucky. Word is he was told he wasn't getting the Coordinator job, so he left for greener pastures.

Rick Minter has a pretty good resume, but it's not anything that wows you. I remember the defenses he had at ND in the early 90's (beat Top 5 A&M teams twice in the Cotton Bowl) but I haven't paid much attention to his other teams since.

I'm trying to figure out what USC is thinking here. Kiffin doesn't exactly have a clean reputation. Seems to me that USC is giving the double barrel middle finger to the NCAA.

yea i feel bad for tennessee fans, hope u guys get mike leach...i think he's a really good coach and would be a great fit for tennessee. plus that'll keep him away from the big 12 and the huskers :D (he's got our #)

They know they can because the NCAA never, ever hits the elite programs hard. Just look at Rhett Bomar situation.

What about the Rhett Bomar situation? A booster was paying Bomar for hours not worked at his business. Reports had Bomar geting paid for up to 40 hours of work while only working 5 a week. The compliance office receives hours forms from the business and were lied to about his work. Once they became suspicious, they started an investigation. As soon as this was confirmed, Bob Stoops dropped him from the team immediately and OU self-reported. This compared to USC, who's silence has been deafening IMO.

USC is about to get the hammer dropped on them. Between OJ Mayo, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Dwayne Jarrett, & Joe McKnight, USC is going to be hit hard. If anyone thinks Carroll didn't know this, they are kidding themselves.

That's pretty much the definition of a "lack of institutional control."

things like this happen all over the country, the only way programs get caught is if the player starts bragging about it to everyone.

No, it was ruled "failure to monitor". Basically, OU didn't independently check up on the place of employment as much as probably should have happened. The NCAA did realize that this was three students who made a decision to accept extra money and a business owner who decided to lie to the university. There is only so much they can do, and it certainly has nothing to do with Bob Stoops.

As opposed to the direct evidence of paying players by Tim Floyd and many issues on the football team. Now I am not blindly defending OU. Their behavior in the 80s was bad and Kelvin Sampson was all too happy to make calls. But in this situation, the Bomar story doesn't compare to what faces USC.

The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee released a ruling Friday that Oklahoma should not have been found guilty of separate violations for failing to detect that football players were working at a Norman car dealership and failing to monitor those students' employment.

The appeals panel partially upheld a "failure to monitor" violation imposed against Oklahoma, stating that the university didn't use established institutional procedures that would have revealed the employment of 12 players at the dealership in summer 2005.

Of course it happens, but in this case OU didn't "get caught". They investigated inconsistencies then self-reported and self-punished.

Yep, this is pretty much life in NCAA land. Given how nit-picky the NCAA rules are, pretty much all programs commit some rules infractions. Given how competitive things are at top programs, you can bet that many of them are committing serious infractions. Yet you hardly ever see them on serious probation. (Alabama excepted)

Or if rival schools hire private investigators and report the findings to the NCAA. It's happened a few times in the SEC. :)

No, for that see: Alabama - Albert Means case

Anyway, I'm kind of sorry to see Kiffin go. He made things...interesting in the SEC. He has serious foot-in-mouth disease. They need to watch it, though. Hiring a coach with a reputation as a "dirty coach" can kill your program. After we hired Jackie Sherrill, the NCAA was always on our case for the most minor of infractions. They conducted a witch hunt toward the end of his career, including the longest investigation ever (3+ years), with no major infractions found. It was a black cloud hanging over the program and caused serious damage.
